I’m a Canadian who’s travelled all around the US by car. Two weeks ago, I was planning on driving through Arkansas to Texas. It was my first time in the state and I can’t say enough good words. I was only supposed to drive through and I stayed two weeks. The scenery and landscapes are incredible in the NW. Sometimes I’d just get in my car and drive for 100 miles because it was so relaxing. The people are so kind and life moves at a much slower place. I think I honestly fell in love with Arkansas and I’m seriously thinking about moving there. What a place

A few years of my Professional Engineering career was spent working in Arkansas. My career took me all over the USA so I got to evaluate a lot of places for retirement. Arkansas was near the top of the list. Mountain Home was the second place on that list. Hot Springs was clearly my number one. The main reason back in 2007 was the nearby medical support in Littlerock AK. If Mountain Home now has a University and upscaled Medical facilities it may be number one. When making retirement plans for you and spouse make plans that one of you will likely be a widowed person in the fullness of time. Retirement location will be driven by the kids jobs locations.

@@staralioflundnv I live just outside of Springfield MO a couple hours away but have land/small place on Bull Shoals on the west side that i spend about 25% of the time, not too far as the crow flies to Branson. I grew up in MN (but have lived for the past 30 yrs overseas in some really humid places) so when it comes to humidity it is really a personal matter. Generally speaking, I think one's body can get acclimated to what are considered high degrees of humidity or dryness after a season or 2. For me personally, i don't think the humidity is too bad in a place like this. Sure, it will have some periods of high humidity but not suffocating like FL and parts of TX. This area is kind of a confluence of the northerly jet stream and southerly jet stream so it has a nice balance to it imo. Evenings are mostly pleasant. i probably only use my AC 30% of the time during the evenings in the summer. One thing that i was surprised about this area is that it is sunnier than i thought, even in the winter. You may want to have a visit in June/July and then again in January -February.

Hey that's my home town!! I grew up there and left in the early 2000's a little after high school. That town is a place of two halves. The ones who have and the ones who have not. Growing up there the town had a noticeable divide. So much so that the town had two bowling alleys (The poor one has since fallen apart). And if you had money you went to one and if you didn't you went to the other. Basically a blue collar/white collar divide. Most people I grew up with left for the simple fact that it's really hard to make good money there. Crime is usually related to meth in one way or another. But hardly an issue. It's a great place if you want a slower lifestyle. You have two great lakes and two great Rivers (White and Buffalo). So tons of outdoor stuff. The retirement community use to be at odds with the locals pretty bad like fighting against improvement to the schools, park improvements, etc. Basically if it didn't help them they didn't care or wanted it to impact their retirement funds. Also Bull Shoals was called Little Chicago, not Mtn Home. The best pizza in the area is Bush's Pizza in Bull Shoals. Gaston's use to be the big getaway for country stars like Willie Nelson and the like. But once the country stars went to wearing bedazzled pants that kinda stopped.

I'd suggest Washingtons North Cascades and the small towns on either side of the pass, which closes every winter, isolating the beautiful mountains, lakes and rivers from regular summer tourists. COL is reasonable if frugal and simple. Crimes by homeless campers (trespassing, theft) is creeping up and most homeowners are armed - there's still bears, elk, bobcats wandering about!

My family has been coming to Lake Norfork near Mountain Home for 4 generations. My great great grandfather was an engineer for the Utah Mining Company in the 40s and helped in the construction on the dam, and we'll as Hoover and Grand Coolie, he loved this area so much that he built a cabin here on his own in 1959, which served as a vacation home for my family ever since. My girlfriend and myself recently decided to to renovate and update the cabin and live here while we do it. I've been coming to this lake for 37 years and love it here. Granted, we are right on the lake and have a private dock, so we try not to go "into town" but once every 2 weeks at the most. 8 months out of the year it's very quiet, no traffic, no sirens, nothing, it's peaceful. My neighbors always help eatchother for free most of the time, literally help eatchother build houses. Everyone is friendly, keep to themselves unless you ask for help with something

Oh!😂😂😂 LMAO at the way you said the lady was talking. YES, that's the way we talk. I started skiing on Lake Norfork 57 years ago at the age of 6 and have great memories. It took living in Houston TX for over 40 fighting felons on a daily basis to truly appreciate living in Arkansas and growing up on the lake. I remember when there was only a few stores in MH, Henderson was mostly where people went to camp. Your video is so real. Just got back from camping at Cranfield and looking forward going back next month. My father lives there now. Your video is realistic to how people are there. I have to share your video with my father.

the reason small towns are dying is because they still pay for globalized services and goods based in major cities such as telecom, netflix, google, car companies, apple computers, or tons of imported goods from other countries. so their money flows out to major cities, or all across the world to god knows where.. and in return the money they make comes from local jobs mostly, so the money flowing in is less than out, eventually the town will be in poverty. unless the town is a vacation spot for the wealthy, in that case they make their money in major cities or other places, and money flows in from their tourism and stuff.

We attended MARIAN DAYS at Carthage Missouri from Louisiana go through Arkansas. We had to go through a pass, sitting in the car could look down into the abyss right next to the road that we were afraid of. From there we choose another route, although a little further but felt safer and only once did we pass through Arkansas again. 😄

This isn’t just showing a Mountain Home. Gaston’s is in Lakeview. You stayed in Bull Shoals. There is video of Cotter. Cotter is the trout capital…not Mountain home. All in all…it’s a nice video.

Great video. I hope as they develop they can maintain that open feel and community. Apartments and townhomes, well-designed, can ease housing challenges but need to be limited bc developers can just go overboard with density to get more units/$.
