Brutal war with Japan. We teach accurate history. Japan is a close ally. Only the south refuses to accept accurate teaching of civil war it started to maintain slavery and think teaching it is divisive. We look back at revolution war, WW1, WW11 every year yet south wants to forget civil war. Some southern states have general lee and confederate’s day holidays. Maybe the people who find saying slavery was cause of the civil war painful should do the work to come to terms with it. You didn’t own slaves. You didn’t fight in civil war to maintain slavery. It’s not a reflection on you. The shame of fighting to maintain slavery is not your shame. Let it go.

If it was about slavery why was the slaves in Texas set free in June 1865 and in the north December 1865? The fact the only part slavery played for the north was to stop it in the south as a means to stop the economy. By stopping the economy the south fell due to lack of supply not lack of fight. Same reason Germany lost in the east which allowed the east to put an end to that mess. Only a little more than 1% owned slaves so it didn’t require a war to stop it took the rich to lose money .

Maybe that's what they said after the war was over and the new history books were written. But, I bet that wasn't the thinking when they first went to battle. The war in the north was fought for reunification. The southern soldiers fought for separation and the fact they hated Yankees. The slavery issue didn't come along until Lincoln needed to undermine the south war making ability. Which didn't happen until much later with the Emancipation Proclamation.

@@cgpcgp3239 I guess you're the "accurate teacher". Also, I guess you didn't grow up in the south with the finger pointed at you. The issues between North and South started shortly after the constitution was ratified. The issues were economics, politics, and cultures. There was already evidence of a movement in the south to abolish slavery. The Virginia state house had already drafted legislation to transition from a slavery based economy to a labor based. The tobacco states would quickly join followed by the cotton states. The transition would take a great deal of cooperation but as one Virginia states said, the north has been too belligerent to even negotiate with. The south was afraid Lincoln would then outlaw slavery and would destroy the souths economy and fear of black retribution too. They succeeded because of this fear.

@@scarecrow953 State articles of succession reason for succession was slavery. You admit cause of civil war south’s fear Lincoln would abolish slavery. The cause was slavery. Slavery was deeply embedded in southern economic and social culture. Poor whites fought to maintain social hierarchy with slaves at the bottom. The eagerly participated in subjugation and exploitions of free black people after the war. If the south hadn’t created Jim Crow and lost cause narrative we wouldn’t be here today.

No, the North's cause was preservation of the Union. The Destruction of Slavery wasn't anywhere on the radar. 1. Delware a union State still had slaves until December 1865, that 8 months AFTER the civil War Ended. (April 9th, 1865) 2. The Emanicpation procilamtion only affected states and territories held to be in Rebellion, and was issued 3 years after the start of the Civil War. It didn't affect States loyal to the Union. The 13th amendment took effect in December 1865 (and didn't include the Southern States in ratification because most Southern States weren't a part of the Union. they had to pass several steps before being readmitted to the Union. Most wouldn't be readmitted to the Union until 1872.)

Keeping slavery out of the territories was a bedrock policy of the Republican party, and was widely considered to be the beginning of the end of slavery. The destruction of slavery was very much on the radar, which is why the slave states rebelled in the first place. Of course abolition was not the official policy of the Federal government, but any politically aware person in the country was certainly aware of Lincoln's "House Divided" speech.

The reality was that the overwhelming majority of Union soldiers didn't give a tinker's dam about the slaves. All you have to do is read their letters and see how they treated the 'contrabands' once they were behind their lines. Even the GAR reunions excluded the 180000 Black Americans who fought on their side. This 'historian' ought to know better.

Lincoln wanted to save the Union. The South should not have attacked Fort Sumner, then Lincoln called to increase the size of the U. S. Army to prepare for a conflict and invasion of the South. Slavery was a growing issue, but thousands of Southerners did not fight for the preservation of slavery, but the preservation of their homes. When the North was losing the issue of slavery and emancipation was enhanced to continue a war that was growing unpopular.

No, it clearly wasn’t. Yes, the Confederacy wanted to keep slaves for their economy because they couldn’t imagine having to source workers for the plantations without paying them. From that perspective, it is about economics. Lincoln wanted to free the slaves, but he didn’t do anything rash because he knew it was an extremely difficult issue. As soon as he was elected however, the states seceded because they were afraid the Republicans would destroy their way of life. The South started the war, and it was only a couple years into it that Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, stating that all slaves were to be set free. So any slave that Union troops found was to be set free. So the war initially was started because the Southern states were fearful of the Union destroying their ugly, evil, monstrous “way of life” and as the war went on, the Union’s focus shifted more to freeing the slaves. The aftermath of the war shows this. The Southern states were given absolutely no grace on the issue of slavery; it was over.
