I worked there about 20 years ago. It was true back then, that if you acted like you were more than a casual fan, they would not hire you. I worked as the asst maintenance dir for a few years, so I have been upstairs several times. The Maintenance dir was a friend of mine, and helped me get the job, so he told me to lay low on the fandom in the interviews. Good thing he did, cause I was/am a massive Elvis fan!!! Interesting note, at the time I was there, I counted approximately 40 guns upstairs. I'm sure they've all been cataloged and are in storage now though. Met Lisa Marie once. She was absolutely beautiful, inside and out. We spent about 10 minutes casually chatting, as we are only a few years apart in age, and both a couple of Memphis kids, though her childhood was obviously a bit different from mine! Also, Jack Soden is one of the most gracious humans I've ever known, hands down.

Was the upstairs different or the same when you worked there?
@dnicar
@dnicar 3 жыл бұрын
@@lisagintz8795 It was relatively the same. Elvis had glaucoma, so he kept some sore of medicated Eyepads next to the bed. Those were still in the night stand, as were the 3 remotes he kept for the 3-26in console TV's that were installed in the ceiling directly over his king sized bed. In the 70's we only had 3 networks, NBC, CBS, and ABC, not including Public Television, so he had 3 Tv's installed in the ceiling so he could watch all 3 at once. The toiletries were still in around the sink in the bathroom, sans prescriptions. It was completely surreal, as you can imagine.

I have a question.. where do you get to the attic from upstairs? Where is the door and stairway located?
@dnicar
@dnicar 3 жыл бұрын
@@nanettetrinkle5641 wow, good question. As I recall, because I had zero interest in the attic, I believe there was a hatchway in the upstairs hallway, but I don't recall if there was an attached stair or not. Both the hatchway and pull-down wooden attic stair were common in virtually 99% of all Memphis homes built in that era, of which I grew up in, in Summer/Graham area of Memphis. When Elvis bought that home, it was way out in the country, for Memohis, but now the surrounding area is a dump, sadly. But EPE, has been buying up the surrounding areas for years. I haven't visited in about 5 years, and I really miss that place. I remember one night about 20+ years ago, standing INSIDE the wall, setting up the sound system for the candlelight vigil, and just being completely overwhelmed emotionally, that I was standing in Elvis' front yard! It's still a very emotional thing for me.

Lisa said in interview the reason she doesn't want anyone going upstairs is because he died up there, she wants his space to remain private and it was his sanctuary, only staff is allowed upstairs(probably the cleaning ladies) she also said everything is the same as when he was there and looks like he just left. She did say that there is a tall stack of books piled on the floor in a corner on all sorts of religions, she said he was fascinated on reading about different types, I found that interesting. She also did say that she felt a real sense of peace when sitting in his room, so probably feels his spirit is still there and respecting that as well.

When I was there, I took a VIP tour and someone in our group asked about upstairs and we heard the standard reason why we couldn't go up, but the guide also added that Graceland would have to undergo some major structural modifications to build a second exit for tourists (probably out to the back yard) and likely some other changes to accommodate the public...even in small numbers. I mean we're talking probably having to add fire exits, an elevator for ADA compliance and all sorts of things that would change the overall character of the home. For me, I'm fine with it being closed off as it is, but I do think that maybe Graceland should do a video/photo tour for fans to see.

In truth, Graceland wasn't a happy, positive place in the last years of his life. It simply wasn't. It wasn't the happy home movies we've seen anymore. Graceland became a dark place esp in that last year of his life. That energy is still there. The negative energy from his addiction and death are still there. People think it's simply sadness from Elvis being gone. It's not. You're feeling that negative energy that was created there and has been left behind when he died.

I've been to Graceland about 20 times since I was 8 years old. When I was very young, I used to really want to go upstairs. Over time, the whole idea of that being Elvis' personal place has really set in with me. I have no issue looking at old photos and hearing stories but I honestly don't think I'd go up there even if they ever did open it to the public.

I was in Memphis for Elvis' birthday a few weeks ago. They offered a special tour called Hidden Graceland the evening of Jan 7th, 8th and 9th. I think this was the first time they ever did this. A maximum of 10 guests per night. Angie Marchese and Tom Brown led the tour. I was able to get in on the 9th, with 6 other people. We were there for 2 1/2 hours, got to do things you can't do on the regular tour, and got to see things not on the regular tour. No, we didn't get to go upstairs to Elvis' room, but we got to see the room in the basement where Jerry Schilling lived, and the best was going upstairs in the racquetball court to Elvis' Dressing Room/Bathroom area. No cameras allowed for that part, but the scene is etched in my memory!

The one to the left is to the guest dressing room, you walk in and to the right are little cubby holes to put your street clothes in, a dressing area, if i remember correctly, there were 2 sinks with gold sparkled paint and gold plated faucets, a separate room with a commode, maybe an ok shower. Walking out, turn left to get to Elvis' dressing room. More deluxe obviously. Gold plated everything. Private commode, but the best part is Elvis' shower. Walk in, you can sit down. Tiles about 2 inches by 2 inches sort of a variety of colors a peacock would have. Blues, Greens, Gold...mostly Blue though. Gold Shower heads...14K I assume, by Jacuzzi. FIVE shower heads going in all different directions: 3 from overhead, 1 from the side and one low that shoots water upward. Crazy, but sounds interesting.

My uncle was allowed upstairs, and in the basement, while my grandpa waited in the living room. My grandpa used to tell me the living room was red. I never believed him because the carpets at Graceland are white. Turns out, they were red in the 70s, which I didn’t know until I saw pics much later. I have always said that if I had *ONE* dying wish it would to have a one-on-one personal VIP tour of Graceland, that included a tour of areas not normally accessible to the public and of the entire upstairs. I would not touch anything, nor take pictures or even film it. I would simply just soak it all in and be in the moment. I think it is the right decision not to allow visitors upstairs. But … I do wish they would perhaps have a really state of the art high quality video of the upstairs for fans to view on the official Graceland website. I think that would appease the vast majority of fans. That way you still get to see the upstairs, but still maintain the privacy and integrity of the rooms upstairs from being viewed in person.

I know he was mostly a people person, he Likes having people around. I may be wrong, but I feel like Everyone needs some “alone time”, it helps to center yourself, to get away from all the people who are constantly wanting something. Besides I Think I read somewhere that Lisa Marie used that room. It was on KZbin, I just don’t remember who posted it. BUT THE WHOLE TOP FLOOR SHOULD REMAIN CLOSED TO VISITORS,, I’m a Huge Fan of the King, have been since I knew what music was, and I think in a way all of his fans contributed to his ultimate death. Wee took and took everything he had to give and wanted more. I think that’s why he got into drugs in the first place, us and that piece of human waste who was his “manager”. He was only out for himself, how much money he could squeeze out of Elvis. I’ll get off my soap box now. R.i.p. Elvis, be at peace' we still Love you and miss you. 🦋🦋🦋

Here are the procedures to getting in EP's bedroom, as laid out to me by Angie: 1. Written memo to Jack Soden as to the reason for needing access with an approximate time needed in the room. 2. Memo is approved by Soden, and forwarded to either Priscilla's, or Lisa's reps. 3. Approved or disapproved by either, and sent back to Soden. 4. If approved Soden will retrieve the keys from Graceland Vault area. The door has two combos. One Soden has, and the other is the head of Graceland security (not affiliated with their uniformed guards.) 5. The persons, or persons approved to enter the bedroom are checked for cameras, and have listed on a memo pad, what they are bringing up, or from the room. If photos of an item in the room are made, then each photo is accounted for, and stored by Soden while the process is on. 6. Soden, or one of his security will escort the rep, usually Angie Marchese to the upstairs area and open the two locked doors. 7. The time Angie is in the room is timed, and documented.

Things haven’t been changed so the memories and being able to step back In time to a happier place for them. No other Entertainer gave as much to his Fans as Elvis did. They could of kept Glady's room private. It was that way, when Graceland first opened up. That's ignorant for Fans to say, they should show us what upstairs looks like. I wish they would give Lisa some respect. She has said numerous times, She goes up there to be close to her Father. Now She probably goes up there to be close to her Son as well. Especially since so many people have said that Benjamin looked a lot like his Grandfather. Lisa and her Children have a tremendous amount of pressure on them. July 12 is going to be a very hard day for Lisa and her Daughters and Priscilla. Lisa supposedly said, the backyard is not the same yard, I grew up in and had all the good times with my Father. Now it's a graveyard. Go to the Memorial Garden. I am a huge Elvis fan, have been for many years, Elvis Is My Man, I visited Graceland October 2018, and it does not Bother me that we were not allowed up into Elvis's Private Space, I was just happy to walk into Graceland, and into areas that he shared with his visitors, I see it as a space that his daughter Lisa can be Close to her Dad, she had to share him with the world, she lost him at nine years old, and his private space is all she has left to herself of her dad !

I would say respect their wishes, just because as we all know at home he was a private man. So I would say this is his wish no one else. I grew up with his music in parents home. I was born in 1972 and me and a friend of mine still listens to his music. This was his only wish to keep everything private at his house, I mean keep the respect for him and let it be. If I had a Genie lamp I would only ask for 1 wish and that is to stand in front of his Memphis house (not to go in, just at the gate.) RIP Elvis.... #neverfogotten #alwaysinourheartsmindandsoul.

Yes it would be nice, but i personally would Not like people coming into his personal bedroom. It should remain private always. Remember him that should be enough.

I believe that it was his private place and should be kept that way it was were he relaxed and was able to meditate with God God Bless Him

If Elvis’ family doesn’t want anyone up there then that decision should be respected. I think it should be left alone.

I feel Lisa's request should be honored. I was just grateful to see what parts of Graceland were allowed and to be able to pay my respects at the grave site

I haven't been able to go to graceland as of yet. I hope to go one day. I would love to be able to go upstairs, but on the other hand this was Elvis' personal space where he could have privacy. So I think we all need to respect it and leave it as it is.

So we know lots of people have been up there. From Johnny Harra and the actress who played Ginger, to the folks who took stuff out of his room for exhibit like the gold bedroom phone and up to some technicians who set up the live cam feed from his bedroom window. This whole thing about his privacy is important, but it also creates a mystique about the legend.
