I worked there about 20 years ago. It was true back then, that if you acted like you were more than a casual fan, they would not hire you. I worked as the asst maintenance dir for a few years, so I have been upstairs several times. The Maintenance dir was a friend of mine, and helped me get the job, so he told me to lay low on the fandom in the interviews. Good thing he did, cause I was/am a massive Elvis fan!!! Interesting note, at the time I was there, I counted approximately 40 guns upstairs. I'm sure they've all been cataloged and are in storage now though. Met Lisa Marie once. She was absolutely beautiful, inside and out. We spent about 10 minutes casually chatting, as we are only a few years apart in age, and both a couple of Memphis kids, though her childhood was obviously a bit different from mine! Also, Jack Soden is one of the most gracious humans I've ever known, hands down.

Was the upstairs different or the same when you worked there?
@dnicar3 жыл бұрын
@@lisagintz8795 It was relatively the same. Elvis had glaucoma, so he kept some sore of medicated Eyepads next to the bed. Those were still in the night stand, as were the 3 remotes he kept for the 3-26in console TV's that were installed in the ceiling directly over his king sized bed. In the 70's we only had 3 networks, NBC, CBS, and ABC, not including Public Television, so he had 3 Tv's installed in the ceiling so he could watch all 3 at once. The toiletries were still in around the sink in the bathroom, sans prescriptions. It was completely surreal, as you can imagine.

I have a question.. where do you get to the attic from upstairs? Where is the door and stairway located?
@dnicar3 жыл бұрын
@@nanettetrinkle5641 wow, good question. As I recall, because I had zero interest in the attic, I believe there was a hatchway in the upstairs hallway, but I don't recall if there was an attached stair or not. Both the hatchway and pull-down wooden attic stair were common in virtually 99% of all Memphis homes built in that era, of which I grew up in, in Summer/Graham area of Memphis. When Elvis bought that home, it was way out in the country, for Memohis, but now the surrounding area is a dump, sadly. But EPE, has been buying up the surrounding areas for years. I haven't visited in about 5 years, and I really miss that place. I remember one night about 20+ years ago, standing INSIDE the wall, setting up the sound system for the candlelight vigil, and just being completely overwhelmed emotionally, that I was standing in Elvis' front yard! It's still a very emotional thing for me.

She did say that there is a tall stack of books piled on the floor in a corner on all sorts of religions, she said he was fascinated on reading about different types, I found that interesting. I mean we're talking probably having to add fire exits, an elevator for ADA compliance and all sorts of things that would change the overall character of the home. @@michelletimmons7179 You get up stairs and from there you can look down at the racquetball court, but turn to your left with your back to the racquetball court, and there are 2 doors. The one to the left is to the guest dressing room, you walk in and to the right are little cubby holes to put your street clothes in, a dressing area, if i remember correctly, there were 2 sinks with gold sparkled paint and gold plated faucets, a separate room with a commode, maybe an ok shower. Walking out, turn left to get to Elvis' dressing room. More deluxe obviously. Gold plated everything. Private commode, but the best part is Elvis' shower. Walk in, you can sit down. Tiles about 2 inches by 2 inches sort of a variety of colors a peacock would have. Blues, Greens, Gold...mostly Blue though. Gold Shower heads...14K I assume, by Jacuzzi. FIVE shower heads going in all different directions: 3 from overhead, 1 from the side and one low that shoots water upward. Crazy, but sounds interesting.

My great uncle knew Elvis. He and my grandpa went by to give a quote on a job. He was hired to install the black leather doors upstairs. My uncle was allowed upstairs, and in the basement, while my grandpa waited in the living room. My grandpa used to tell me the living room was red. I never believed him because the carpets at Graceland are white. Turns out, they were red in the 70s, which I didn’t know until I saw pics much later. Was really cool to see the doors my uncle installed.

I read it was red and that’s because he allowed one of his girlfriends to decorate it but after his death, Priscilla and Lisa Marie put it back to the original color which was the way it is shown now.

I have always said that if I had *ONE* dying wish it would to have a one-on-one personal VIP tour of Graceland, that included a tour of areas not normally accessible to the public and of the entire upstairs. I would not touch anything, nor take pictures or even film it. I would simply just soak it all in and be in the moment. I think it is the right decision not to allow visitors upstairs. But … I do wish they would perhaps have a really state of the art high quality video of the upstairs for fans to view on the official Graceland website. I think that would appease the vast majority of fans. That way you still get to see the upstairs, but still maintain the privacy and integrity of the rooms upstairs from being viewed in person.

He gave us his all. Please let him have something that was his personal space left alone. Besides , I don't want to see where he passed away. I have been to Graceland , and it was still an unbelievable experience. I walked the grounds that he walked , I touched the handrail going into the downstairs that he touched , I pet his horses (which were still alive) , I stood 2 feet from his outfits in the glass encasements , etc. Why do I need to see the upstairs? It was already difficult to know that they brought his body down the staircase in front of me and out the front door that I walked in. No thanks. Show the man some respect. There has to be a limit. ❤

NO! NO ! NO! That was Elvis’s sanctuary, when he was alive, The only place he could be alone when he wanted to be, without renting a place or kicking people out. I know he was mostly a people person, he Likes having people around. I may be wrong, but I feel like Everyone needs some “alone time”, it helps to center yourself, to get away from all the people who are constantly wanting something. Besides I Think I read somewhere that Lisa Marie used that room. It was on KZbin, I just don’t remember who posted it. BUT THE WHOLE TOP FLOOR SHOULD REMAIN CLOSED TO VISITORS,, I’m a Huge Fan of the King, have been since I knew what music was, and I think in a way all of his fans contributed to his ultimate death. Wee took and took everything he had to give and wanted more. I think that’s why he got into drugs in the first place, us and that piece of human waste who was his “manager”. He was only out for himself, how much money he could squeeze out of Elvis. I’ll get off my soap box now. R.i.p. Elvis, be at peace' we still Love you and miss you. 🦋🦋🦋

Here are the procedures to getting in EP's bedroom, as laid out to me by Angie: 1. Written memo to Jack Soden as to the reason for needing access with an approximate time needed in the room. 2. Memo is approved by Soden, and forwarded to either Priscilla's, or Lisa's reps. 3. Approved or disapproved by either, and sent back to Soden. 4. If approved Soden will retrieve the keys from Graceland Vault area. The door has two combos. One Soden has, and the other is the head of Graceland security (not affiliated with their uniformed guards.) 5. The persons, or persons approved to enter the bedroom are checked for cameras, and have listed on a memo pad, what they are bringing up, or from the room. If photos of an item in the room are made, then each photo is accounted for, and stored by Soden while the process is on. 6. Soden, or one of his security will escort the rep, usually Angie Marchese to the upstairs area and open the two locked doors. 7. The time Angie is in the room is timed, and documented.

As a life long Elvis fan. I feel That them not allowing people upstairs may keep not only keep the respect of Elvis but the feeling the may have of being close to him up there. Things haven’t been changed so the memories and being able to step back In time to a happier place for them. Maybe the family feels that if people go up there it’ll change the dynamic of the memories. I say just leave it as it is and if people aren’t allowed up there, then that’s it. I read the upstairs cannot handle that kind of traffic structurally. How about build a one for one replica of the top floor across the street as an exhibit. But in general, to keep the actual upstairs of the house private I think is appropriate and respectful. At some point I would also like to see them return the downstairs of Graceland to the Red Period as it was when Elvis last saw it, he remodeled those rooms in 1974 for a reason.
@jimfoster79863 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that Graceland never actually existed the way it looks now when Elvis was alive. The Jungle Room decor came with the ‘74 red remodel, and the same is true of the TCB design in the basement. Also, the racquet ball court came after that, I believe.

@@jimfoster7986 I totally agree, Elvis had the Racquet ball building built in 1975. The stained glass peacocks in the living room were part of the remodel, so the living room never actually looked the way it does now when Elvis was alive. Graceland, as it is today, is a composite.
