Hi, I watched a quick van build, where the woman made a bed base just using a piece of ply wood on top of 4 storage tubs. She made sure they were the height of her wheel hubs. It gave her an instant bed and storage underneath.

I love how practical you are and how your van is not social media worthy. It's real! One suggestion: if you added a cot and a card table (two no build ideas by the way) you would add a tremendous amount of functional storage/useful space to your van. There is a lot of vertical space in your van that is not being put to use by you sleeping on the floor.

Dude, get the 50 amp dc dc charger if you don’t have already. I would think your alternator is 150 Amp so if you aren’t drawing the 50 amp you’re leaving a lot of amps wasted when you do drive. Then get a dc battery switch and you can swap what battery you charge on the fly. You’ve inspired me so if I can help make this make sense let me know and I’ll go into better detail. 😊

A piece of advice for your vehicle. Because you're doing a lot of short driving and maybe idling. Consider getting a 10 to 20 amp battery charger and charging your battery once a month. You will greatly extend your battery life and make it easier on your alternator.

@@ToryDelurythat's great advice from an expert on batteries, but the trouble it takes you to store the electricity to charge with is not worth it. @MaurySmith you can't buy a group rated battery for a $ 100.00 for that vehicle. And if you could, you wouldn't want it. You need an agm battery for that vehicle. And they are closer to $250.00 so it's better to charge the one you got.

I’m so glad to see more vanlifers doing “a day in the life” with real boring or busy-with-errands days. So many young adults, right out of high school or college think that van life is glamorous, doesn’t cost any money except gas and food, and that every day is an adventure. Just like living in my apartment- there are fun, adventurous days, vacations (okay, not got me but most people), trips to parks and amusement parks, beaches, mountain climbing… And all those things are great and do happen- for most people just a couple days out of a month at most. Also, they want to take off with no income, no medical insurance, thinking they’ll work odd jobs for people along the way. Those are hard to find and don’t pay much plus, what if the van breaks down or they get really sick- or break a bone?! Van life is still life, and should be planned & prepared for when inevitable problems and ‘bumps in the road’ happen. Unless they are independently wealthy or financed by their parents- it’s no easier than renting an apartment, townhouse, or house. Thank you for doing these videos sometimes. I hope you have a wonderful adventure this week. Safe travels!

@ I’m not against vanlife at all. I just think people should know the truth of what they are getting into. I’m looking for a van to build out as we speak. Especially in the US where there may not be Social Security when I’m ready to retire. I may not be able to afford my apartment. I’ve also been homeless- and lived in a hotel for almost two years. But showing some truth is really important because most people have to find a remote job to afford van life and travel.

@@thefishthefish it’s really two things for me- 1. I have people scattered around the country that I haven’t seen in a long time. Not all of them have ton for me to crash on their couch, plus that gets incredibly intrusive very quickly. I might want to spend a week or two in the area, two to three days is the max I’ll stay with most people, even family. I can’t afford hotels like that. I don’t necessarily want to fly either, mostly because I love the “trip there” in many instances. 2. Most importantly- we have no idea how long “entitlement programs” are going to exist in the United States. If we can no longer work, even our retirement plus the little we have saved without social security will not pay the rent & utilities in most places in the US. At the very least, we’ll have a place to live if things go bad fast. We can survive.

I am sure the issue at the Walmart with the carts sitting around is that they didn’t have someone picking them up hired around the clock. The other possibility is, of course, that the person who was supposed to pick them up just didn’t and the manager didn’t notice yet.

I couldn't find an ideal place so out of desperation I just tried closing the door on to the cable. In my van the lower hinge side corner had plenty of give on the door seal and doesn't squish the cable.

Only to have to get right back up and move, on, off, adjust, finish, get, put back, get out, shut, open, clean, etc, just to lay back down again. And that's without the travel! Just keep on showing us.

Power seems to be a continuing issue.. I would put a 100-200 watt solar panel on your roof, run it into a solar charge controller, and into a couple of deep cycle 12v batteries. From the batteries, use a 400-600 watt inverter. This would take the dependency off your alternator, and most likely save a lot in fuel, by not having to run engine to charge all the time..

For quick and easy dish clean up, a spray bottle with diluted cleaning vinegar is an efficient and simple cleaner/sanitizer that saves water and the ecology. Wipe off food chunks with a napkin. Spray with vinegar and then wipe clean. Repeat to sanitize. Although not as cost effective, a squirt of hand sanitizer and a napkin is great for sterilizing utensils and easy cleanups. Also, a lot of gas stations have outside water faucets. Instead of relying on bathrooms, it might be a little easier to carry a few empty gallon containers to fill up when you come across said gas station. We all live and learn. Thanks for sharing your advice. 📸🌞

Maury, it's true that many people use vinegar to wash their dishes, and that it can kill some pathogens. But for disinfecting surfaces, you'd do better to use rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or bleach. If sanitizing dishes is important to you, consider adding one of these disinfectants to your dish-washing routine.

Back in 2002, right after I retired from the Navy, I took a job at a Sam's Club as a cart associate. It is simply amazing how people won't walk even 10 feet to put their cart into a corral. I have witnessed people parked right next to a cart corral and still wouldn't put their cart into it. We used to joke about how someone would put a cart in one place and if it wasn't picked up in a timely fashion a nest of carts would form around the one cart until there was a substantial number of carts there. I worked at one of the busier clubs. We had a staff of 9 guys that worked the lot from open to close and there would still be days that we could hardly keep up with the demand for a cart. We had over 900 carts in circulation and would sometimes run out. I was in the best shape of my life when I worked that job. I worked at that club for 16 years and finally had enough when a group of managers started throwing employees under the bus and I got thrown under one too many times. So, I retired from there and went into full retirement 5 years later. I enjoy watching your videos! It makes me want to buy a van and hit the road and just travel.

Thank you so much! Yes, I have been trying to figure out what content is best to make for my channel the last few months and been experimenting with all different kinds. My van actually had to get towed from my parent’s house on Christmas because it wouldn’t start so I have been van-less for about 10 days now… So I have been filming a lot of just sit down educational videos, I also have a lot of unposted van build videos still so I know I have a lot of variety coming up. It is really great to know what people like to watch cause I like making all different kinds of videos so it helps gear me in a good direction :) Also YES that is a great idea! I definitely could do that! I appreciate the advice & kind words! Happy New Year!

Didn't know honey peanut butter was a thing. Ive been craving it since I left the US in 2011. I used to make my own w/ spun clover honey which wasn't available in Puerto Rico and definitely not in Colombia 😑 I haven't had Panera in that same time I used to eat bacon turkey bravo twice a week the bread and whatever they put on the crust😜 i need to get back to the mainland. Nice outfit you put together there😉

You can use Dawn power wash and paper towels to use very little water to wash dishes.

That stuff works great. Tory actually used it in this video. Don't you still have to rinse the soap with water?

@MaurySmith if you are short on water, you can simply spray water with a spray bottle. Don't need much water to rinse of the residue.

To wash dishes try using a spray bottle with vinegar and water mixture. Spray and wipe. It’s a great camping hack

I believe I heard that it was a 50/50 mix? I'll be using this method when I start solo road trips and car camping.

You might want to check out a video from Ready.Set.Van about using EV charging to charge your house batteries. The guy in the video was using a chargepoint EV charger to charge a Promaster house battery. On my van, I added conventional 120v 15a external charging plug without having to cut any holes are or mod the van. I took a heavy duty 10ft extension cord, cut the receptacle off, ran it along the inside driver's side of the van and wired it into my charger/invertor. The other side I inserted into the rear driver's side pillar and through the factory grommet behind the driver's side rear bumper, leaving a 1ft pigtail plug. When not in use, it lays flush on the inside plastic channel of the rear bumper resting between the bumper skin and the towing receiver bar (completely stealth when not in use), When I need to shore power, I grab my 25ft outdoor extension cord, drop the bumper pigtail down and connect everything up. I've had this setup for over two years without any issues.

I also have a heavy duty extension cord coming out of my Promaster. Tory look for the square rubber grommet under the back passenger side behind your bumper. It's so easy to feed the cord in that way. Pops up in the inside corner column. Zip tie the plug onto the underneath of the van. Cut a slit and circle in the square grommet for the cord. Put back over the hole and tape the daylights out of it so no bugs can follow the cord in. At campsite plug in 2nd cord to power box. My inside cord goes up that back column and along the wall over to mid point of the van to a power strip that also has usb plugs. One of my most used adds to my simple build. Thanks also for the Google maps tip. I've been keeping a list in my Samsung Notes of the over 30 different Cracker Barrels I have stayed at sorted by store receipt number. Thanks for the videos and be safe.

@ 0:44 Trust me, I'm this clumsy as well 😂😂 I like being clean however, if there are 2-3 things laying around in my car and I'm in a hurry then by the end of the day, the inside of my car would look like a hurricane has pass through 🤭 LMAO, I'm at Panera Bread right now watching your videos (I like going there to feel cozy, special on a rainy day) :D Currently eating a Cinnamon Swirl Bagel and sipping on some coffee :) Honestly, for me, I wouldn't take that giant brick into Panera because I would feel like a bum and I'm trying to hide the fact I'm there because I'm homeless, I want to feel like a regular customer (and I want to avoid any attention and not be insecure) :l Yes, although I'm not broke, I do live in my Car 🙂 Are you serious? For me, when I use to hop around states, I couldn't find Hot Cheetos, WTF? I have to go back to California, this is not for me! But I can relate 😂 Guilty as charged, I'm not environmentally conscious and don't really care much although I do try to be self efficient but sometimes fail miserably :) Yes!! Why the hell does some Planet Fitness have cold showers? I don't get it, sometimes I think they are being cheap with the hot water.

Think I saw a Vancity Vanlife sticker on your laptop. Now that Chrome has a Sprinter, I kind of wondered if he knew of your channel and if he has been checking you out for ideas with his own build.

wow I love your video, been binge watching and being mesmerized about van life decades ago, always coming back to it and fantasizing about it. Always wanted to experience it and travel places but I don't have my driver licenses. So no car. Definitely would love to one day. If you ever in NY, you can come crash in my parking space outside my house XD. Let me know if you still single and dating? I'm a shy introvert not much experience but looking to build genuine connection.😝

Can Vanlife people start using the expanding EV charging network to charge batteries? Also, I understand the no build angle, but a rudimentary bed frame would greatly increase storage and space. Also, seems like it is worth the effort to complete solar panel install.

Yes they can. I saw a video of a guy doing it. You need the adapter and a step down machine.
