"This Is What Winning Looks Like" is a disturbing new documentary about the ineptitude, drug abuse, sexual misconduct, and corruption of the Afghan security forces as well as the reduced role of US Marines due to the troop withdrawal. In part three, we see that the sad truth is, at the end of the day, we will be leaving behind ill-prepared security forces, which will likely lead to an increase in Taliban attacks, civilian casualties, and, overall, an increasingly dangerous and fragile nation.

God bless Major Steuber. He's a true representation of what a Marine should be. I really felt bad for him while watching this.. You could tell he has so many great ideas on how to run this operation and how to fix the problems that they are facing but his hands are tied and he has limited power and the people he's working with have no interest in wanting to help fix the situation. This is what needs to be shown on the news, this is the type of documentary that would open people's eyes on what's really going on in Afghanistan.

I loved how he pointed out the problems with logistics. Too many people forget the bread and bolts aspect of waging a successful campaign. Looking at those generators and solar panels, I can just imagine the contractor who sold them. "Oh, yeah, they're totally green and efficient." Green, efficient, expensive, and too complicated for peasants to operate. The money would have been better spent buying a cheaper, older generators that the Afghans actually know how to operate and which are easier to replace. Those generators are going to rust once we leave.

@johnny flappie with your logic if a house is on fire it's ok for me to poor more gasoline into it, but for real what's the legit reason the US had to enter Afghanistan for? i don't see it that way the, the US killed more innocent lives with it's bombs, missiles and operations than taliban and the rebels combined...
@raidbenachoure1330
@raidbenachoure1330 4 жыл бұрын
@johnny flappie it all went down hill when the Soviet invaded them, and it was made worse after oussama the terrorist stepped on that land, but oussama was funded by the US and he was an ally of them, that means even before the US set a foot there it already did more harm than good, they just went in with no mission other than capturing oussama, but guess what oussama died like 8 years ago, why is there still active US bases there? oussama was just a reason for them to start a war and controlled that strategic land, US's military industry benefited billions if not trillions from the war in Afghanistan alone, War is a business... that's what i'm trying to get to you, it doesn't matter what Afghanistan was up to, the US wanted those juicy minerals and that juicy war machine money and to build more and more bases in the middle east to keep everything in check.

The problem is the U.S. literally did nothing to fight corruption at the highest levels. When you've got people stealing fuel, ammo, not paying the soldiers their salaries, of course they're going to run off to the Taliban who have been said to pay quite well compared to the government. Literally one of the poorest nations on earth, loyalty is earned by who signs the bigger check. That's what ultimately lead to this.

@@urwifesmacho777 They were defeated by the old Mujahideen not to be confused by the Taliban Mujahideen who are worlds apart when they preach about the holy war, the Afghans also had help from China, Iran, Pakistan because the Soviets had helped the enemies of China, Iran and Pakistan years before. Another critical fault was that the Soviet Union used conscription mostly, the soldiers were undersupplied and lacking experience and training many of the conscripts were from the Soviet-asia area which meant most of them were deeply religious and with the lack of moral meant that a large portion of them deserted to foreign sides or to the ranks of the Mujahideen. Most of it was politically based from what I can gather, there are even reports the US provided stinger missiles to be used against Soviet oil depots, Soviets couldn't move into Pakistan to attack the Mujahideen who were based out of those territories a war of attrition meant that the Soviets were overwhelmed, undermanned and outgunned (I say outgunned because the Soviet tanks were useless in the desert as they were still basing the experience of fighting in World War 2 which is a lot different than fighting a guerilla war.) and attacked from multiple sides.

I'm not surprised at how well educated or well spoken Maj. Steuber is. He's a Major in the USMC, you don't achieve that rank by being anything less than well educated or well spoken. What impressed me was his ability to be honest yet still hold his tongue when it wasn't within his rank to say something. Discipline is a core principle in our military structure and he gives us much contrast when held up against an Afghani soldier of similar rank.

I can't express the amount of respect I have for Major Steuber in words. In many of these types of vids, you see people playing the grandstanding moralist. These people always spend their time pointing out the failings of others, but are too high up on the soap box to look at their own actions. I can tell by his inner conflict and solution oriented thinking he is not one of these men. Even though you could tell being in the same room with some of these men made his skin crawl, he still was always focused on improving the efficacy of his unit, instead of screaming and shouting like a war movie drill sergeant. It is like that other soldier was trying to explain to them, you must make due with what you have. I sincerely hope the army had the incite to make him Colonel Steuber, though he was probably demoted for the things he had said.

I couldn't agree more. (Except one small correction, Maj. Steuber is not in the US Army, he is a US Marine.) Major Steuber personifies the professional American Warrior and Leader. Thank you to Major Steuber and all brave warriors that have volunteered to serve and protect our nation and try to bring some semblance of peace and law to the people of Afghanistan. My gratitude goes to all of our allies as well, our brothers in arms that have sacrificed and took the fight to our enemies to prevent attacks on our own civilians. Sadly, it appears that Afghanistan will follow the same path as Iraq, gradually falling back into enemy hands. Regardless, flawed and failed government policy does not take away from the Commitment, Bravery, Sacrifice and Honor that warriors like Maj. Steuber and so many others demonstrate each and every day.
@bobbyewing311
@bobbyewing311 10 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I was thinking to myself "this man needs to be higher rank than Major..........." If more officers were like him the military would actually be the "peacekeeping" force that it claims to be. I've seen so many of these documentary films of Afghanistan and the Afghan soldiers were basically their servants and they treated them like subhuman slaves. He looked at them as equals and expected higher morals and behavior out of them. He didn't look at the Afghan people as lower than himself he was just pointing out the facts that they didn't know how to read or write and from a logistical perspective they didn't understand how to run the equipment on the base. He understand the real issues that need to be fixed in order to achieve the goals the politicians set for them and all their superiors believe is that if you throw enough money at a problem it will solve it, this right here proves that wrong.
@weatherGod012
@weatherGod012 10 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with you. I am genuinely concerned for his mental well-being, however. There were many instances in this documentary when Major Steuber seemed genuinely disheartened and disturbed when asked to talk about some of the issues plaguing the Afghan forces. I can't fully describe it, but he was often filmed with a distant, "deep-in-thought" expression on his face that was remarkably sad, and at times I found myself expecting tears (none came, of course). I hope that when he finally returns home that his life isn't destroyed by the things he has experienced, or at least that he has plenty of support if the burden of his experiences becomes too much to bear, because it was clear from this documentary that the man has experienced some terrible, depressing things in Afghanistan.
@stevil1300x
@stevil1300x 10 жыл бұрын
weatherGod012 Of course he was "genuinely disheartened and disturbed." He was dealing with a gaggle of pedophiles that don't give a shit about how he is trying to help them. We would all be affected. I think a big part of that "deep in thought" expression was thee Major thinking before he speaks and choosing his words wisely - which he always did. I don't think his life is anyway "destroyed."
@weatherGod012
@weatherGod012 10 жыл бұрын
I agree, most people would also be affected by it. I guess I was surprised, as was the reporter, at how outwardly affected he seemed by it. From experience watching other videos where military personnel are interviewed (news, other documentaries), I'm accustomed to soldiers giving the outward impression that even the worst of it is "part of the job", even when, as you mention ex , they are all likely deeply affected by their experiences. Major Steuber's reaction was thus unsettling to me because I am not used to seeing military-types betray their inner feelings to the media, especially while they are still on the job. Also, although no one cannot know how he will adjust to civilian life (if and when he returns), I expressed my concern for his mental well-being primarily after hearing the reporter mention that four soldiers/military employees that he met in Afghanistan have committed suicide since returning home. I was especially concerned for major steuber since he seemed tired and depressed on the job, although I do understand that sometimes those who suppress their outward emotions are sometimes those in the greatest distress. That is all. I just wanted to explain myself a bit further. By the way, I also agree with your interpretation of his "lost in thought" expression.

I think the point is that racism has to be mentioned when there is no sign of it, in fact, the opposite. Guys are losing their lives for this and all you think about is racist cards.

I would not wanna do it as well. Talinban know when they arrive, they would try to take down the flag. So it could be bait. A sniper might be aiming at it from somewhere waiting for people to climb. the tree is so tall and exposed.

+Max Berg Afghans are what they are and they are part responsible for it. The most responsible are the people in command in the West... Steuber is a great guy, idealist, naive in a way but that is what makes him likeable.

“You could do a hundred good things, and then a policeman goes and does something like that, and now the community just focuses on that one bad thing”- Major Steuber So very true. Its funny how well this works to describe what happens here in the United States too. Edit: On second thought this kinda sounds as though I’m downplaying police brutality. It is real, it’s just we’re only gonna hear about the cops who do terrible over the cops who do good Edit: On third thought it still sounds like I’m downplaying police brutality lol. There are a ton of instances in which police departments do more harm than they do good, (LAPD, Chicago PD, etc.) so it’s obvious that people are going to look at them poorly, especially when you take into account the history of how police have treated blacks in America. I think the role of policing needs to be completely reimagined here for this perception to be destroyed

what happened to George floyd this week is a good example to what cops do here in the united state.Our own people are dying here for no reason let's fix that first then we can go to oversea's and be a good example.

The only thing is that he is a soldier to his core. He sat quietly when the ambassador was fed propaganda that he knew to be a lie. He could have made a large impact, but he decided that being a soldier was a higher value than acting on his conscience. Anyhow, Steuber is a great man I agree, but not a perfect example. If he would have also stood up to authority, for what is right, I think he would truly be an exemplar. Still his heart is in the right place and I truly hope he is doing well.

It certainly takes a very brave man to take one of the most dangerous jobs if not the number 1 job getting shot at every day. Hang in there , if you need help processing everything you saw over there, help is available just ask. Certainly you guys who deployed are all coming back with ptsd. I hope you are doing ok, neighbor.

Hey Steuber!!! if you are reading this then I hope you are doing well and not dwelling too much on your experience. I dont think anyone would disagree that you really did not just do your best, but you went so far beyond what anyone expected you to do, that you owe nothing. You were given an impossible task and its not your fault. None of it. Absolutely none of it. What I am glad to know is that there are people in the military that put in the effort into impossible tasks. I am retired from the British Army now and I still continue to put in the same effort as you to where I can see it needed. You are an inspiration, and your community needs people like you, to not just lead them, but to do it in the manner you have already proved, the manner in which to do the right thing. Please continue to inspire others in ways you may have not expected. Well done Steuber. Good fucking work. And I would like to imagine you are still conducting that work in everyone you engage with to this day, wherever that may be, Conor
