It might be worth you watching a video on Michele Mouton, the best female driver ever. She took on the men in rally driving and embarrassed some of the top drivers. Pikes Peak was mentioned at the end of this video and nobody thought she could take it on, there is a very good video about it. Someone also mentioned her in an earlier post.

I've had a 'schoolboy crush' on that woman since I was 19yrs old (was a watercooled VW guy, cheered for Audi). I think I've seen elsewhere that she's decided to get into vintage meets these days (also bringing her co-driver from back then). Her hair's gray instead of black now, but so's mine. I don't care what color volcano she is now..she's still Michele.

Michelle Mouton may be the best female WRC driver but not ther best female rally driver, that´s Jutta Kleinschmidt, winner of the Rally Paris Dakar with a car and a bike. Jutta was a marathon offroad giant and also good at 24 hour track races in Spa, at the Nürburgring ect.

It might've been Walter Röhrl who said that when driving through those crowds in Portugal you could not think of them as people if you wanted to be fast. They were just trees and bushes to the drivers in order to go flat out.

Some "grim" facts about Santos' crash in Portugal: - He lost control because he had to swerve to avoid hitting a spectator that jumped onto the stage as he was going downhill at almost 200km/h. - Four people died in the accident, not three: three were killed on the spot (two of them were a mother and her 11 year old son) and one of the injured died the following day. - The next drivers that passed through the accident's location reported it to the marshalls at the end of the stage but the FIA people in charge only let the emergency services reach the accident's location to assist the injured spectators after the last car had completed the stage, despite the insistence of the drivers and the portuguese authorities to stop the stage immediately. - After they learned about what happened, all the major teams immediately refused to do the rest of the rally. Later that day, they held a meeting at the hotel where they were staying and signed a document demanding that the FIA took measures regarding the spectator's safety and the improvement of the cars' safety for the rest of the season or they would pull out of the championship. The FIA's president ignored the document and insisted that they had to complete the rally. They all packed up and left and the rally was finished only with some of the portuguese drivers. Money spoke louder, nothing changed and it took two more deaths just 2 months later to put an end to Group B.

The winter rally are actually some of the fastest rallys out there. They don't use regular tyres but got very heavy pattern and long metal studs to really grip the snow and ice. Group B was a ticking bomb at the time. As you noted the lax rules caused a lot of the issues. I remember reading about it back then since there was no real TV coverage broadcast in the US and the writers talked about how exciting it was but at the same time that something bad was bound to happen. The announcer in this video, Scott Mansell (no relation to F1 and IndyCar driver Nigel Mansell) is a racer himself and I highly recommend checking out his other videos on his channel Driver 61.

I grew up watching this as a kid on TV, I never got to see live a GroupB race but did go to Group A in the 90s which took over from GroupB, later to become WRC , I initially hated the fact that GroupB was cut, but later grew to lover GroupA. It was pretty normal for mechanics working on groupB cars to spend more time removing fingers of spectators from there cars after stages and events. That's how insane these spectators were, they couldn't get enough! There was even a race off between the Lancia Delta S$ vs the current F1 Champs car in a drag, race the delta S4 won that drag race, its acceleration was insane! I maybe wrong but I think also there was a run off vs a fighter jet also, mem might get that one mixed up. Sad for the deaths that was insane, that rules and regulations weren't in place limit spectators, plus protect drivers! F1 had addressed many of those concerns in the late 70s, it should have been obvious, but I had no idea it was this loose as a kid, it was just specular and me and my Dad would sit down watch it on TV, it was awesome, nothing like it since, todays Rally I dont really follow, like many sports its not as accessible, I can watch it on RedBull TV, but its not like it was in the 80s when we would sit down in front of the TV me and my Dad together, him having a beer and chips and me with probably not beer, soda etc. Great times, never forget. It was a great era of motorsports, it really was, F1 was at its best as well. Great reaction, def dig deeper others have mentioned Superwoman Michelle Mouton, def worth checking her out as well, again no one like her since! 🤘

I know all about this one being a former dirt track racer. Give it up 40 yr ago when I got me some kids at 32. I was pretty good. Started at age 16. Had been run cars on home made track for 6 yr by then. Took third in my first race at Woodhull NY with the car a paid $100 for. Put the winnings right back into another car. Never won Many races and did not run enough to get any real points on the season but I never went from a race without some kind of winnings. After the kids I got 10g's for the car I was driving then. Never put any money into a car that I did not win but for that first 100 bucks.. If u ride with me today it will be a fun drive b/c I dont speed but I like to push a car through a turn.

If you want raw sound, there's nothing like the videos by amjayes2 and marvdogger2, absolute incredible footage, with just sound. First time I saw one I got hooked. Also, Group B was killed on the spot, that very day at Corsica. The then FIA president Jean Marie Balestre anounced a ban on Group B cars taking part in FIA sanctioned championships, and also killed Group B's meant successor; Group S. Group A was to be the new top category for the WRC, sporting cars much closer to an actual mass produced road car.

I saw this live in sweden and finland in the 80,s. It cant be explained, it has to be seen with your own eyes to get the real grip of these cars. One funny story is that when Michelle Mouton came to the service area after some stages in portugal the mechanics found a finger stuck in an air intake on her audi 😂😂😂😂😂 It was a sport in it self from the spectators to be able to touch the cars flying by.
