I wear my hair natural after years of relaxing it. I wore ponytails, and I got a sew in weave once. In 2018, I realized that Queen Latifah and Jada were straight naturals. I am not quite a straight natural, but I blow it out, and no flat ironing is added. I love my hair to be big and bouncy. It has grown a lot. So I'm happier with my hair without a relaxer. Sometimes, I don't blow it out, and I wear it in a bun. It's more work, but I love it.

As a white man whos been seeing a black woman and always been attracted to black women, I have never understood why some women wore weaves and hid their natural hair. This has always been a turn off for me, even in the lady I’m currently seeing, who used to wear her hair natural. This is because I find the natural look of afro hair very sensual and attractive, and I felt, as the video said, that some of these girls were being inauthentic But I’m glad I now understand why, as especially when it comes to maintenance, I can see why the naturally curly hair can be a pain to style. This won’t change my sexual preference, but atleast I won’t wrongly assume that every woman who does this is insecure about her natural hair.

I wear a wig for convenience and due to some hair loss due to stress and illness. I like being able to change my hair based on my mood and what look I want. I consider it traditional based on many African and Egyptian practices to wear wigs or weaves for special occasions and celebrations. At home, on a normal day, I don't wear wig as often or at all. I don't use relaxers anymore and wigs allow me to give my hair a break while I get to change my look whenever I like.

As a 59 yr old Black man, I'd rather have a Black woman who was completely bald than wearing a wig of some other woman's (usually race/ethnicity) hair. No one is buying Black American women hair; only Indian/Asia/White hair. Plus now women have access to Hollywood 'special effect' level tricks. It took me a long time to figure out that women have BIG foreheads now because that's a hairline covering like a horror mask. I thought it was hormones or something they put in food for kids nowadays.

I believe Black women should give the wigs a rest. I believe Black hair is the best hair ever; it can be worn strait, it can be worn curly; it can be worn short; and it can be worn long! For those of us Black women who have a different grade of hair are often ridiculed and told that “we think we’re better”. I wish I had the so called Black hair texture because it’s sooooo beautiful! But my grade unfortunately is in the “good hair” category. I would like to see Black women loose the wig wearing, at least see us stop wearing them all the time!

I did that "good" hair until she was a teenager. There is no such thing as "good" hair. If you have hair, It's good hair. Now that I'm in the menopause stage my hair has changed significantly, I want my kinky hair back. As for a wig, a weave, braids...braids without extensions, maybe. All that other, I cannot imagine using all those chemicals, spending all that money on someone else's hair, to wear around.

I love your response!!! You covered it all and great questions at the end. You know the answer though: jealousy, jealousy, jealousy! Mix that in with the desperate psychological, emotional, sociological position of the woman on the exterior pressures adding that to her own cultural position of wanting to feel respected, praised, beautified and dignified! As no matter what goes on on the outside with competing cultures pressing and hating and excluding, as women, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties - just as women within our own communities and homes - we wish to take hold somehow of our Crown of Glory! That beautiful crown that praises the Sun and causes us to radiate such brilliance and beauty in our spirit as we love ourselves and represent our blessings...well, that crown was once thrown down, discarded and defamed. In its place a new standard of beauty was replaced and sought after from within and without the culture and our communities. It's really each woman's decision and her journey of determination with no right or wrongs. If one has the utmost strength to love themselves, then bravo! If someone needs a surrogate that helps give the leverage of love needed, then bravo also! Ultimately, we all meet our Maker the same way - as we were when we came and we have the battle scars to prove the journey was real, winning and losing along the way! God Bless everyone and keep you safe and well!

Finally! A man took the time to dig deep to understand weave culture, thank you 😫🙌🏾 Just to add, wearing weave also stems from the “redlining”of knowledge in retaining length textured hair. Cause the irony is, wearing weave isn’t the best protective technique even tho it’s doggone convenient
@BlackExcellenceMedia3 ай бұрын
That's interesting, what's "redlining" of knowledge in retaining length?
@Mistamannfour3 ай бұрын
If you want to retain hair length you braid your own hair: you don't need to weave in some other woman's hair into your own! Also, proper washing, conditioning, maintaining, and wrapping/covering of Black woman's hair contributes to longer and more healthy hair. Weaving is detrimental to the health of Black woman's hair!

@nicoleleamon41883 ай бұрын
Awww, is this true?! I feel for you, daear child. I know sometimes it can be difficult in childhood to speak up and find a way to relate to the adults that hold so much sway over life. Is there a way, do you think, that you might show your mom a photo of a natural style that you might like to try? Maybe you can work on it together over time? There is also concern about some of the issues of perming hair, as it's said to cause uterine and ovarian cancers. Hopefully, that issue has been resolved as permanents are still being sold and bought the world over. Whatever the need, let's hope and pray that you are able to confide in your mom your desires as they are good desires. I remember my mother's hands upon my head still! It was a firm, but loving touch and good for my development. I am sure your mom is thinking about presenting you to society in a way to let others know that she loves and cherishes you through the care that she shows in having you styled in the standard of today's modern and cosmopolitan ways. Yet, I hear you also saying that you just want to spend more time with her, getting to know and experience her personal approach to your development. You would be right as many mom's used the time grooming the hair to chat and encourage. Many of us fussed about having to sit still during those sometimes long, long hair sessions, but it gave a window into precious and intimate moments that took us from being little girls into bright, articulate women! I hope your journey is blessed and you get to spend more time with your mom learning through the experience and identity of your beautiful, natural hair! God bless!

I may have missed some of your comments, but here are some of my thoughts - from the perspective of a senior black woman as to why black women wear wigs and weaves: (1) age-related hair loss; (2) alopecia; (3) cancer drug treatment; (4) convenience/real time-saver; (5) substantial cost savings on relaxers and other hair care products because they can be quite expensive; (6) some relaxers can be damaging to not only the hair, but to the entire body. Note: D.L. Hughley did a program on the dangers that some of these hair care products pose that are marketed specifically to Black women. Racism is everywhere!!!

I am a black a brazilian and I came to see why the americans use wigs. This is just culture, racial segregation maybe the cause, because in Brazil is not acceptable a women to wear wigs, I mean , the women would be ashamed of herself. ALTHOUGHT I have to admit in Brazil almost 100% of us are mixed ( most liked wont have type 4C hair) and I was also impacted about the amount of black people in USA that are not mixed. With a dark skin. This is very rare in my country as well. We in Brazil are mixed race almost 100% and while in Texas and also Seattle I realized how USA is so segregated and different races dont marry and have children...

That's insightful to learn and why it's so important to travel. It teaches you that so many people are very different (looking) and all the same inside wherever you go. There are no aliens on the planet, just sisters and brothers from different fathers and mothers. All human and in need of love and representation. Some have 4C hair, some don't. As well, people do what they want. Who but God can stop them? If shown the path, most of us make up our minds to follow in truth. The truth is, you should love yourself first and love your brother/sister who is your fellow human by that same love. A person wearing a wig loves the same as one who doesn't. At least, my two cents worth. Let's pray that you and I are correct in our summations.

I've heard a lot about Brazil viewing race differently than Americans. I'd like to add that interracial marriage vs segregation differs depending on what part of the USA you are visiting. I am from the Philadelphia area. We are much more diverse here than in Texas or Seattle. We are on the border of the line where slaves escaped to be Free Blacks in America. If you go South of Philly, you see a bit more segregation, and thought processes that are remnants of the Civil War. If you go North towards New York City, you see more blended races and diversity. I had to travel the states myself to really see just how different America varies in their views on race. I live on the line that separated slaves and Free Blacks, so if I go one way, I get one culture, and if I go a different way, I get a different culture.
