THIS Is Why Caitlin Clark Is An AMAZING PLAYMAKER
In the Indiana Fever’s last game against the New York Liberty, Caitlin Clark tallied 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists. Although she filled the stat sheet, her assists is what stands out. Over her last 6 games, Caitlin Clark has averaged 10.5 assists per game. Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are at their best when they are pushing the pace. How does Caitlin Clark orchestrate the offense? In this video, I explain further.

@@quasarrad1464 seriously. low bar to clear. I'm a fan because of CC's BB IQ, her playmaking and her assists. and her ability to work with her team, and elevate them. with a supportive coach, bring them to the final playoff. even with an incompetent coach, get them into the playoffs. that's just amazing. if that turns out not to be part of how ROTY is chosen, I don't care (and I doubt CC cares that much -- look at her reaction to getting the triple-double, trying to shush the crowd while her teammate shoots a free throw). MVP? sometime in the next few years, I hope. but what she's doing is breathtaking.

The Fever are beginning to understand that when the ball is in CC's hands good things happen, not just for her but for everyone else on the team. CC is also learning how to get the ball to each teammate. Some can catch the straight pass some do better with a bounce pass etc. It is all starting to come together. It will take a while yet but this team is eventually going to be a winner, a top 5 team. It is exciting to watch it take place. Coach Sides needs to get with it as well or she might not have her job for long. Benching CC when she is one rebound away from getting a triple double is not the way to create job security for herself. I think the Fever can do better than Sides.
@outsidethegarden

to me, CC building a play-off level team out of the worst in their league is worthy of MVP. probably not next year, but soon. and she did it with no help from Sides, and in fact Sides made it harder for her, tried to get her to adopt Sides' style. if there were any justice in the world, Sides would already be looking for a new job.

definitely agree. and even if I think the other commentators are trying to be objective, they get caught up in the controversy and the one-upmanship, not to mention accusations of racism (both ways) and "woke-ism" (both ways), and basketball fans' preference for forwards or for point guards, and style of play. I love Carter's approach, because he's so factual and low-key but also enthusiastic. who knows who's going to win ROTY? (Mick Talks Hoops has a great video on that, "ESPN Host DISRESPECTS Caitlin Clark," explaining the history of the ROTY and the preference for post play.) but also, who cares? maybe Angel Reese and her fans, maybe a lot of CC fans -- but not CC, I don't think. my prediction is, if she were to win ROTY, she'd handle it the way she handled her triple-double: trying to shush the crowd so her teammate could shoot a free-throw. and Carter would do another kick-ass video of the reasons for her turnovers, and how her playmaking is gradually transforming the Fever.

I’m an old guy who grew up with Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, Wilt and company. Listening to Chick Hearn. Carter you are wise beyond your years. Here’s one thing I don’t get. Triple doubles in NBA are actually rare. Few players get them. Double doubles are common. Look at point rebound double doubles and you’ll see almost every center will have 50 of them in a season in NBA. ITS actually a stat that nobody cares about. I find the Angel Reese stat remarkable not because she has 12 in a row…but because of the fact she broke the record of 10 in a row. You mean in the W, that’s a rare stat?? That’s what I find remarkable….

They don't box out in the w. They just wait for the carom. Clark isn't in there fighting to be top 10 in rebounds, she just gathers the long bricks and runs. Neither is reese banging for the rebounds, she's just opposite cardoza so no one worries about her as the lesser of 2 evils. Reese is not a good shooter so they let her shoot rather than leave cardoza in single coverage.

I like how you point this out about Cardoso because the truth is, Reese did not start this double double stretch until Cardoso recovered from her injury. Caitlin Clark by leading the league in turnovers is a PLUS, not a detriment to Caitlin. If Caitlin has 42 more turnovers than any other player in the league, then that means that Caitlin is working harder than everyone else in the league. That means that Caitlin has had the ball in her hands more than any other player in the league. That means that Caitlin Clark has been pressured, trapped, and haggled more than anyone else in the league. THAT MEANS THAT CAITLIN'S ROLE ON HER TEAM IS MORE DEMANDING THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER'S ROLE ON THEIR TEAM. THAT MEANS THAT CAITLIN'S RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HER TEAM IS GREATER THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER'S RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THEIR TEAM. Ladies and Gentlemen, leading the league in turnovers REALLY means that compared to Caitlin Clark no other player in the league has "carried the water" for her team as often as Caitlin Clark has done for her team. That means that no one else in the league has "taken the bullet" for her team as often as Caitlin has done. That means that no one else in the league has "stepped up to take the beatdown" as often as Caitlin Clark has for her team. This reminds me of back in my early days as a medical practitioner performing certain invasive pain mitigating procedures. I was somewhat beside myself after having performed what I thought was a bunch of procedures without experiencing a significant challenging episode. The more seasoned docs, the ones who had performed 1,000s of procedures compared to my several hundred procedures, brought me back down to earth. They told me that I'd not seen nearly as many challenging episodes as they've seen because, "young man, you ain't done enough, yet." So, I say to Caitlin's critics who are focusing on Caitlin leading the league in turnovers, "THE REASON WHY OTHER PLAYERS IN THE LEAGUE DON'T HAVE NEARLY AS MANY TURNOVERS AS CAITLIN HAS IS BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T HAD TO DO AS MUCH FOR THEIR TEAM AS CAITLIN CLARK HAS HAD TO DO FOR HER TEAM. In other words, THEY HAVEN'T DONE ENOUGH YET!

Carter! You made a great point about that first play in which Caitlin kept running to the corner after having handed the ball to a teammate. Caitlin's defender kept following her even though she no longer had the ball. Do you watch football? That play reminded me of a quarterback hiding the ball and running to one side, even after he's handed the ball off to a teammate. The defense keeps following the quarterback, which frees up the person the quarterback gave the ball to. Another great video; so many examples with clear explanations, and the way you showed the video before AND after your explanation was an improvement. Gr8 analysis! 1) As u said, the WNBA pace is quicker than college BB. Every player was prob acstarter in college. 2) Takes time for the team to get in sync. A month+ ago, Clark & teammates needed a split second to analyze what the other was likely to do & then react. Now, teammates anticipate what Clark might do & pisition themselves accordingky. Clark now knows teammates will be cutting to the basket or moving to the corner. 3) Other teams do not want the look of Clark scoribg 25+ per game. Part of this is don't foul Clark too much cause Clark is 80+% FT shooter. The FT line is the same distancevas in college. IMO, in this game, Fever basically played Iowa's game. Get the ball in Clark's hands coming up the court. (KC Chiefs do not set up n the shotgun & direct smap to a RB; no they want the ball i. Mahomes hands.) Spread the D on the perimeter, run pick & roll and move off the ball. Clark will draw a double and find a teammate inside or open past the arc. Rough comaisons Iowa:Fever H. Stuelke: A Boston K Martin. S Afofolter, G Marshall (as shooter): N Smith, K Mitchell, E Wheeler, L Hull, etc. C Clark: C Clark, of course. G Marshall (as "shutdown" defender): ?? (TBH Marshall was my fav Hawkeye because of her attitude & relentless play on D.)

I'll add an addendum to #2: I've read that the Fever are the youngest and/or most inexperienced team in the league. Also, their top 2 players are a rookie and a 2nd yr player - no other team's top 2 have anywhere near that level of inexperience. And that isn't just lack of playing time in the W, but also of course with each other, whereas many teams have had star players and/or most of their starting lineups who've been together for a lot longer than that. Thus, the adjustment period and early practice time has been much more vital to the Fever as opposed to every other team.

Again, another great analysis by you. It’s good to see Caitlin’s teammates finally catching her passes and finishing. Also, I’m glad that Sides has finally figured out that Caitlin needs to have the ball in her hands to drive the offense. Earlier in the season when she had Caitlin in the corner and having Mitchell or Wheeler handle the ball, it was a disaster. It’s good that, at least some of the time, Mitchell realizes that she shouldn’t be dribbling the ball around for 10 seconds and then miss a shot. But this team does need to have better time management. Shot clock violations should not be happening a few times a game.

I'm loving watching the development of the team. from "never mind CC, here's what Sides wants to do. oh dear, that didn't work very well." to "let's try to force CC to just be another role-player. oh dear, that really didn't work very well." to "okay let CC do what she wants, but everyone else keeps doing what they -- oh dear." to "alright, AB gets to work with CC." and then "and Kelsey. and maybe a couple others. but we're not going to let CC get a triple double. this is a TEAM. which means, Coach Sides' kind of team." to "I give up. do it, girls. I'll run up and down the sidelines screaming, but you can ignore me." and WHAT A SURPRISE!! CC gets an historic triple double, and they beat the Liberty. (yes, on an off-day. still!) this is the future of the WNBA. thank heavens.

At this point, teams are better off letting CC shoot those logo threes. because her assists are more dangerous. And say what you will about CC's game, but for her having to change her game on the fly is so impressive. People tuned in for Steph Curry and got Magic Johnson...LOL

I'm tired of hearing about the different levels of sports. W players and NBA players came from college or highschool. Caitlin has been playing with boys and a target on her back her whole life. There is no transition time for this girl and she is proving it. They are trying to make her fail but I Don't think she will. Go Hawkeyes!

Just found you. Love your analysis and how you show it in the context of the game! Thanks. NOW I have to ask is the defense so bad or was it the new chemistry (as you mention Erica and Williams finally adjusting) that they had not seen before from any team, CC fast pace with all-in from the rest of the team? Will be interested in hearing your analysis! What was interesting in your discussion of CC getting into the paint that it was Wheeler that got the ball in the end! Thanks for covering that.

Yeah, it's like Ricky Bobby in the movie Talladega Nights, "Im not quite sure what to do with my hands". To me the outside set is an improvement in hand usage vs inside set putting his right hand up to his face and leaning on it. On CC, I notice some people are calling it "Caitlin Clark Derangement Syndrome", like Cheryl Swoopes, who did that interview where she outright LIES about CC22 Iowa achievements, pure jealousy, nastiness, and ignorance, and her lazy LIES about CC22 ("She took 40 shots a game") were so easy to fact-check.

To show how disingenuous the WNBA and ESPN etc are about Caitlin Clark. This year, so far, there have been 4 triple doubles. Caitlin has the first ever recorded by a Rookie. Yet all you hear about from the WNBA and ESPN is Angel Reeces double/double record 😂❤ I mean seriously who cares how often she eats at In&out burger 😊
@outsidethegarden
@outsidethegarden Ай бұрын
well as far as I can tell (and Mick Talks Hoops has a good video on this, "ESPN host disrespects Caitlin Clark"), the ROTY is more about forwards and rebounds than point guards and assists. so as Mick puts it, he thinks CC is the better player, and has "that much" of an edge for ROTY right now, but is very unlikely to win ROTY. which helps me understand why Angel Reese fans are so adamant that CC fans are a cult, and out of touch with reality.

@outsidethegarden I think unless she literally improves her average to a triple double, there's no way she gets ROTY. It's a possibility but her team are so bad and coach is worse. So personally she's going to probably get close but fall just short. 2024 regular season stats. PTS. 16.1. REB. 6.0. AST. 7.4. STL. 1.4
@outsidethegarden
@outsidethegarden Ай бұрын
@@Advoc8te4Truth seriously hope the ROTY isn't evaluated by the team's standing. (especially seeing that her coach is literally the worst in the league, if not the universe.) now, how much she's IMPROVED her team's standing ought to count for something. but since very few rookies are going to do that, seems unlikely to be part of the criteria for ROTY. I just hope that next year, or the year after, she gets MVP. because yes, she's unlikely to get ROTY. check out Mick Talks Hoops, "ESPN Host DISRESPECTS Caitlin Clark" for a discussion of the history of the WNBA ROTY and why he doesn't think CC will get it.

You’re saying the defense is terrible but the reason is because when a team is fast and there’s an extreme shooting threat it’s hard to quickly get your assignment covered because they have to deny Clark’s long shot. In every game when you take something you have to give somewhere. It’s terrible BECAUSE of the pace and Clark’s gravity.
@bernadettegoss7888
@bernadettegoss7888 Ай бұрын
I was just going to comment that! It's NOT their normal defense! They are so hyper focused on what CC is doing, they're losing their man. Fever knows this. Watch, this will continue to happen. If the team doesn't keep CC in check, she'll pass it to her teammates. If they DON'T keep her in check, she'll kill them herself. LOSE/LOSE for the other team!
@outsidethegarden
@outsidethegarden Ай бұрын
not sure I agree. (though I'm a newbie, so what do I know.) seems like if the pace is the reason, then the defense would be strong at first, and then fall apart. whereas if it's about starting with a "target CC" double-teaming and blitz approach, and then that falls apart because everyone else is open -- well again, strong at first and then fall apart. so my guess (what do I know?) is, they couldn't decide between double-teaming and leaving everyone open, and trying to keep up but failing, and abandoning double-teaming but then it's an open field for CC's incredibly rapid passes or her killer 3-point shots. plus I think they were just having a bad night. but we'll see! if the Fever keep getting matches with teams with "lame defense," then apparently they're doing something very right.

About pushing the pace off of a made basket, when I was in college, our coach (who is in the Hall of Fame) said the player closest to the ball is to take it out and start running right away. In two of those years we led the Nation in scoring at 95.4 and 94.5 ppg, and on each of those teams 5 of the players played in the NBA when there were only 9 teams. That system works, especially when you have players that can run and pass.

dude, you are getting the LOVE with this video. hope you can keep spreading your videos around to other players, so you don't just get identified as a CC stan. that would be a nice safe job slot, but you're worth much more than that. your knowledge, your enthusiasm, most of all your analysis and vision -- you do for us what CC does for her teammates. (and ideally for their coach, but I'm not holding my breath.) take the tips on your presentation seriously, consider sending a video to someone who might want an outside commentator (and don't be embarrassed to sell yourself as "I'm really young, but check my sh!t out!"). you are SO MUCH FUN to watch, and you help us newbies begin to understand what we're seeing. CC is bringing a truckload of us into the WNBA viewership -- you would be a perfect guide for us all. "Here's How Fouls Work in the WNBA." "Why You Can't Make Assists Without Turnovers, and Here's Why Some Turnovers Are Better Than Others." "WTH Is A 'Big"? a Point Guard?" "Who Chooses ROTY, and What Criteria Do They Use?" "Are the NBA Really Better Than the WNBA?" "Is Team USA Stacked? Should It Be?" a whole new career -- probably more than enough for one person, you'll have to hire an assistant. "Who's the Most Over-Rated Player in the WNBA?" "Who's the Most Over-Rated Commentator at ESPN?" no nvm, don't run that one -- no need to make enemies.

Great take! I think the reason Fever players are open is because NY game plan was to first stop Clark, so all eyes were on her. Just watch the defenders when the assists were made. Lastly, the plus minus stat is not really an individual stat but a line stat. It just means the line on the floor at some time frame was better than the opponent. For example, if all starting players on both teams played the full game, the winners would be plus, and losers would be minus no matter what their respective contribution may be.

then she'll switch back to 3-point shooting, a little more often. which will need to improve: part of why she was amazing in college was that the defense was sloppy. and also tighten up her mid-game shots and her cut to the rim. she's always going to have multiple arrows in her quiver.

@@outsidethegarden Yeah, at this point I think Fevers weakness is actually having a lockdown yet lengthy guard defender playing CC straight up man to man, no double teams.
