I just remember when my brother was going through his scissors phase. He cut the whiskers off our Siamese cat.. she hugged the walls like she was drunk for weeks as they grew slowly back, and my brother got no toys or lollies for the same amount of time. It was a little bit funny to watch but we did have to help her a lot..

Cue lots of frantic creative attempts to cover the bald spots by mum the next day. But he never ventured near the cat again

They can't see close in. The whiskers are their eyes. Also at night the whiskers let them know if a space is big enough to let their body through. I encourage you to search for slow motion of a cat pouncing on prey. Their whiskers actually have muscles at the base and they lean forward to gain extra range at the exact instant of the pounce. Pretty amazing!
