I'm glad Dead Island 2 was finally released but man was it a long wait. They just gave away Dead Island Riptide - Definitive Edition in anticipation of Dead Island finally releasing on Steam.

The only thing I remember from Dead Island's long development time is how they put a Fake Jack Black cameo in the teaser trailer

These long development cycles always generate interesting stories. When I was fist getting into gaming more seriously, it was right around when Duke Nukem Forever came out. I think I watched like four or five videos back then listening to different people explain "what happened?" and I had never even played a Duke Nukem game. I wonder what the next decade+ long release will be. I guess if Episode 3 ever comes out lol. Also, wild to remember Crackdown 3. Always felt like it could have been the saving grace for the xbone. Then it was just... worse than 1 and 2. Great video.
@LuckStat8 ай бұрын
I guess technically Skull and Bones was probably the most recent development that took way too long, but the end result seems so uninteresting that it'll probably be forgotten fairly soon. Yeah, I'm pretty positive on Crackdown 3, but it's definitely because I played it far away from release on gamepass with zero expectations. It's a great Xbox 360 game that came out 5 years too late, and should never have been a big potential console seller

Fantastic work, as always. The production quality across the board is always top-tier. I know others have pointed this out, but the irony of Deep Silver spending close to a decade to get Dead Island 2 shipped out, while Techland published TWO Dying Light games, selling 30 million copies in total, in addition to becoming a much bigger, more defined franchise, will never fail to impress me. It speaks volumes about the level of mismanagement that continues to plague Deep Silver. (Just look at what they've done to Volition/SR.) On another note, I'm truly impressed by the work that Dambuster Studios was able to produce in a little over 3 years. Dead Island 2 looks gorgeous, its gore system is top of the line, and I just love the level of simplicity/fun. Plus, the fact that they were able to make it to the finish line with no crunch whatsoever is impressive. It really shows what a great team that understands how to set expectations, and has a tight management system is capable of. Too many games today are made by studios that have a bloated management team and an unclear direction, where developers are forced to crunch because of scoop-creep, where they don't know how to scale their work.
@LuckStat8 ай бұрын
Definitely. I was trying to not cover Dying Light too much, but it feels like great foresight on Techland's part to avoid the whole debacle as much as they could

I Preordered this game digitally on Xbox and have yet to play it. I want to replay the first game and then Riptide and then play this one. I went and looked on the store and seen i missed the new Sola DLC which i immediately bought, already purchased Haus DLC when it released and i never bought the expansion pass which possibly would've been cheaper. It's even on Game Pass ... I hope we get Dead Island 3

The quality of this video is undeserving of having so few views - it's almost as if it was an EGS exclusive, heh. With such a long time between announcement and release, compounded with the store exclusivity, the actual release of this game probably flew under many radars. Granted, zombie gore games aren't really my thing, but from what I saw, and setting "seamless multiplayer" buzzwords aside - as much as I wish more games had similar multiplayer concepts as the original Watch Dogs - I think the Yager concept for the game would have been more to my liking. Still, I understand not wanting to really continue building directly on top of what had already gone through so many different studios, with an original scope that was probably too large for the budget and timeline available to Deep Silver.

A follow up of some kind is definitely possible. The got 2 million sells but also were on Epic, which was probably contracted in exchange for a big pile of cash. It also released today on GamePass (nice timing, mate!) which also comes with a big pile of cash. Honestly, seeing how poorly Xbox is doing, the fact that it is a "surprise drop", I wouldn't be surprised to learn that MS offered a VERY BIG pile of cash on this one. Based on some leaks and MS' total desperation, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was $50 M or even $65 M. All that to say, these are some okay sales figures, but I don't think that it paints a realistic picture of the profit generated, I think we'd be surprised (not talking billions, eh, more like double what we would expect)
@LuckStat8 ай бұрын
Great timing but it does feel a little bad that this was the first ever physical game I bought for my Series X. Whoops! Yeah, nothing to sneeze at, by any means. Especially when the one-off success of Dead Island 1 (which was smaller) carried them for 12 years. I mean, who's to say what other big piles of cash they'll get if they turn around and make Dead Island 3 in half of that time
@SLRModShop8 ай бұрын
I wouldn't feel bad, I can't get into games I haven't paid. GamePass doesn't work for me at all. Based on stats, it's the same for many people it seems, some achievements show that 95% of people don't even finish the first level of games anymore... (not exact number but you get the idea)@@LuckStat

I can't stand Dying Light. Something about it makes me depressed. I guess it looks too military, and the colors are kinda blunt, and the climbing is extra unrealistic... I don't know. But I like how Dead Island takes the best locations, that are all about fun and looks, and makes it morbid.
@IcyTorments8 ай бұрын
slight rant here, ngl dead island 2 is on my list of video game disappointments for games that launched last year. game looked good and the gameplay was solid however making the characters you play as awful and boring characters with nothing memorable about them ontop of removing the skill tree and replacing it with awful card systems that ended up making almost all of the characters the same in the long run. in both dead island 1 and riptide each character was unique and had thing only they could do such as each of the characters rage being only for that character. dead island 2 doesnt have that and while you can get new rage abilities all of the characters in the game can eventually get them. also making the game take place in Generic ass LA was just bad decision making. now theres a hefty spoiler ahead so dont get bit lol They pulled a dead rising 3 where the outbreak was started find people who were immune to use there blood to create cures. also bringing back sam b as a character only to not get his Voice actor back and instead have someone who sounds absolutely nothing like sam b. shouldve just made a new character at that point because thats not sam b thats Cam D.
@LuckStat8 ай бұрын
Definitely see where you're coming from on a lot of it, though I find some charm in that it exists at all, and that the fun simple combat carried a lot of it for me. I do think the card system is very weak and definitely one of its more "modern" choices that feels really rooted in buzzword triple-a design these days, but I liked Carla at least and Phil Lamarr has always been one of those voice actors that I always just hear his other roles (his Bail Organa and Hermes for some reason) so I wasn't too cut up, but it does feel like a cop out. I feel like it's a long way off from the "who do you voodoo" vibe and closer to a Blade type.

I honestly really enjoyed dead island 2. Ya it's not perfect but it's way better than what I expected. I feel like the original version would of been more boring even if it's your more typical open world. Dead island 2 ended up being more linear but focused which I like. Plus the gore system was amazing and made the game more fun to play everything from guns to blunt objects felt good to use. I'd say my biggest problem with it was the cringe gen z style characters and sam b's new crappy voice actor.
