One thing I don't like about modern tech is how they want to automate everything. I highly prefer things to be manual, to put me in control of my machines, not the other way around. I hardly use social media because of how highly automated it is. I can explain this from my time in the corporate hellscape. Basically every manager has to go to the controlling officer and show what it is their department has been doing, mostly the department is just doing what needs to be done and is in no need of innovation but the managers have to “impress” the controlling officers. This means getting your workers to make random, needless changes to what they are doing. I got my job as fleet manager for the company my job was to get cars serviced, buy and sell cars, insurance and all that stuff. Within a couple weeks I had it on lock, I was taught all the contacts, the discounts and the companies we use. It was great I had a great relationship with all the outside contractors but my boss is like “Mike I need you to get us some better deals” so I’m spending god knows how much time pissing off insurers, pissing off dealership owners and whoever to try and I think the savings in the end were in the 100’s of dollars because we had a sweet set-up. In my opinion it was totally needless and people complained about the new trucks because everyone had gotten used to the old models which were ideal for the kind of outdoor work the other employees were doing. I ended up doing different things in that company but always the same thing, when the boss was up for review I knew I’d have to do some bullshit.

this also drives me insane, and everyone around me seemingly doesnt share my frustration that phones have gotten WORSE. I had a lil LG phone until about 4 years ago that was the pinnacle of smartphones. It had Gorilla glass. Whatever happened to that?? I drove away with that phone on the roof of my car, I saw it smack the ground in my rearview, I just picked it up and it was fine. You cant do that shit with any phone now. It was awesome. Then the FEDS installed the update thing that made it run like shit and it's now unusable. they brick those phones because they want you to get the newer shittier ones. We are going to have barely functioning "AI" on our barely functional shitphones and everything will just kinda work sometimes. I'm furious that things arent just in shambles and they wont be for the rest of our lives. It's just going to get worse, and social media e-cummy points will decide if you get a promotion or not and it will just BARELY kinda work for some people, sometimes. I can barely even use navigation on my phone, it's less functional that the dash mounted Garmin I had in my car 12 years ago.

@@claytonno2571 Precisely... You get a modern car, its ``guaranteed`` to last for 5 years of clean running, then maybe another 5, so 10 in total and its junk, so a 50k$ cca for 10 years of use, where old cars were made to be inherited by your grandkids, and sure, while they took more care and maintenance, they were quite easy and cheap to maintain and if something went wrong, you could take the car to the nearest shop and have it fixed for like 200-1000$ for whatever went wrong... Today, you bump the headlight or taillight, cracking the ``glass`` and you get moisture in the module, it spikes the voltage or shorts the circuit, brings down another 5 modules, resulting in 1000$ for the damn lamp, plus additional 1000$ per module, and you are lucky if it can even be traced and successfully repaired even at that cost... Old lamp got cracked, you changed the glass for like 50$ and the bulb for 5$ and that was it... A bump on the taillight would not cause your car to go into service mode due to system linking and progressive cancer like spreading of failures until a damn lamp failure causes your engine to not crank over... Fuck this trend... When i spend 10k, let alone 50k$, i expect a 100 years of service life, not 5 or 10... You could not have made 1000 parts a day with barely adequate tolerances, you could have made one or a few parts a day, and at that rate, parts had to be masterfully done to justify the price of them, and not just that, but to cover the price of the master operator`s work, machine wear, consumables, materials, design department, quality control, dedicated rooms for each step in the process, almost a dozen of specialists in their own fields to come up with the design, calculate optimal material and tolerances and geometries, check the alloy, work the machines, inspect the finished part and its fit, inspect the finished part specimen of the batch for durability and all other factors before you actually offer it as a product... Now you have schmucks who cant sharpen a drill by hand or file a decent flat onto a round bar, who are ``operating`` dozens of machines to produce mediocre parts just to have the shit at least fit the description of a ``finished part`` when inspected by eye, from a meter afar... Fucking shit, i bought oem bearings for cars i worked on, which were more fucked up and crunchy than 15 year old worn out bearings that i needed to replace... LIke what the fuck? Even when automatic lathes and such were made, they sure, could batch up 1000s of parts like screws and shit, but they still took a master operator to make sure shit ran smooth, as nothing is as costly as an error on a self motivated machine... Much like with fucking up on modern cnc... Idiots having spindles hard crash into whatever and such, causing literally tens of thousands bucks in damage... At least on proper(high quality) machines... But cnc error is a programming error, not the operator`s fault, who just mashed the run button after uploading the programming into the console...

I 100% relate to Sam’s rage over the somehow broken autocorrect on iPhones OS. It’s must be intentional because it is an easy fix but has been an issue for a decade UPDATE: 8/28 Sam’s rant did not fall on deaf ears. In the new IoS update, I’m now allowed to type “fucking”, along with auto-correct not changing the words I type correctly. However, in classic Apple fashion, now it’s been autocorrecting and changing words that I type correctly into grammatically incorrect hogwash with words that weren’t an issue before. Yay! 😑

I have been a graphic designer for 5 years and in even in that short time the shift from wanting unique detailed or characterful design is gone, and clients just want the quickest route to a "clean" minimal outcome. it all comes down to cost, and entities wanting to save their margins for them selves. Cost of hours, materials, marketing. A grey building that you can sell for the same price as a detailed build makes far more money because what you save. You just have to convince the people they want the grey concrete house.

The reason why everything sucks is metrics-driven optimization. When you optimize for one thing, that one thing goes up, and every other attribute of the product tends to go down. Not necessarily down, but tends to go down. Design a Ferrari and optimize for performance. A large trunk or high ground clearance is not naturally going to fall out of that process. Optimize tomatoes for shelf life: nutrition and taste aren't going to improve by accident. Optimize a movie for lesbian feelings, and you get the Ghostbusters remake. The way out of this is explicitly to list all the metrics you care about, not just the shiny ones. If you can keep all the important metrics in view, you can save them from deteriorating. That won't work for the feelings people, because they don't care about anyone else except themselves. But it works for many, many businesses who are overlooking key metrics that they actually do care about, and are not including in their process.

The primary reason for things becoming worse is companies are not interested in making the best thing, that is not sustainable in a monetary system, to make it cheap, and be the first to market are the prime drivers of commerce now. Your bullets hit almost everything I’ve seen from the management side. I had engineers in Eastern Europe and Pakistan that could diagnose and solve issues in an hour or less. When they get yelled at for doing it before some donkey in a tie approves it…that initiative is stomped out real quick. So I would add *Stripping your team of autonomy and initiative. You wind up with people waiting to be tasked to polish what they see as a turd they aren’t allowed to fix.
@MagnusVictor2015 Жыл бұрын
My experience from the mechanical/robotics engineering side is that few engineers in the workplace have ever tried to *use* their product in non-lab situations. It leads to stuff like access panels where you have to wedge your fingernails into the crack to lever it open (and cut your fingers, half the time), mounting screws positioned so that you need a 50cm-long screwdriver to reach them for routine maintenance, battery packs where you have to hold a 200lb robot in the air to reach underneath it to change batteries, etc. I suspect that a similar problem is in software: "*Separating design, manufacturing, and maintenance."

tbh about refining culture, i do like it when the thing that gets the refinement manages to mix properly both old and new into the mix, with suddle changes like changing the font a bit to make it look more balanced and stuff like that. BUT, a big but at that, this is what allows to change stuff for the worse, its like if someone throws trash on a specific part of the street, eventually that will become a dumpster full of trash because everyone else will do so too. Also, related to the busywork stuff, shit like windows has many issues, issues and stuff that has been carried over from legit MSDOS to Windows 11, but mainly stuff from 95, vista and 7. There is a clear need to update and change stuff really deep into the operative system to properly make the visual system actually work as a system, every windows iteration carries something from the previous one that they refuse to update along the way, if you going to do busywork might aswell redo the whole thing. Related to the dumpster stuff, when that happens there is a clear need to normalize everything for real this time and real work has to be done when shit like Windows 11 or 10 happen.

Years ago when there was all this upset about emojis not being diverse enough and there not being enough options, I speculated that eventually we'll revert back to hieroglyphics so that everyone has a universal language. The oversimplification of design and use of images rather than words seems intent on making multiculturalism function with less effort on the part of the newcomer to a Western country; we see it as dumbing down, someone who can't speak our language sees it as simplified and welcoming to their language barrier because they don't have to do any work to learn our language.
