Over the years that I've been making these videos, I've come across a wide variety of cartoon parents. Some of which are absolutely stellar, meanwhile others... Not so much lol. However, out of all the cartoon dad's that I've come across, there aren't very many that can hold a torch to Hugh Neutron. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're going to check out an episode that really shows Why Hugh Neutron Was Such A GREAT Dad...

Hugh Neutron is probably the only example of the idiot dad trope that works in animation. Because unlike almost every other dad like him, Hugh cares about Jimmy, he isn't neglectful or abusive, he's just a goofy dad and works as a foil to Jimmy as well. I also like how he actually has a positive relationship with his wife Judy. Whereas in a lot of animated media, or sitcoms you begin to question why these housewives married these dumbass dads. Especially after flanderization. However, Judy and Hugh have a stable marriage and despite her scolding Hugh it never feels toxic, in fact they are probably the best example of the idiot dad/housewife trope in animation. Plus Hugh never overstays his welcome and always had the right balance, there's also the memes.

And, while I'm certainly no authority on Jimmy Neutron and haven't done much rewatching, I don't remember ever asking myself how Hugh makes it through day-to-day life. Like, he didn't feel like he was outright too dumb to live like a lot of these "dumb guy" characters tend to fall into.

And while Judy is the more put together of the two, Hugh feels like a natural counterpoint to her because we see him get her to relax and just *slow down* which explains how the two of them got together.

I would say some other examples are Doffitsmirtz and Richard since both despite their flaws still care for their family greatly. Richard especially is a deconstruction of this trope as it actually explained why he is married with Nichole despite everything and does a good job of showing that his neglectful dad and over-protective mom is what caused him to have those flaws in the first place.

Also the line from Judy about canceling their vacation to buy the encyclopedia implies that Hugh did go to bat for Jimmy and suggest they find a way to get it, and that the two of them care quite a lot about Jimmy if they're willing to spend that kind of money on his education and happiness. Hugh definitely had his priorities in order.

@@DuskTillShawn I don’t mean to ruin the moment, but I’d like to point out that there’s a misconception (and even a scam) involving spending huge amounts of money on diamond rings. I know the episode they made was before people knew about this, but it makes me wonder what the episode would’ve been like if that wasn’t the case? Like, instead of blowing his cash on a scam ring, he would’ve blown all that money on gambling at a casino for their honeymoon, and Hugh only did that because he didn’t need that much money to be happy.

I like every time Jimmy tries to change his dad he eventually realizes nothing beats his original self he's not the most athletic, not the coolest, not the smartest, and even the (intentional) funniest but he's Jimmy his dad and loves his son no matter what even when he was rich he still bought him the encyclopedia showing you he did somewhat care about his sons happiness

We never really get proof of what happens when someone is still stuck in a future that is getting changed. It does contain the grandfather paradox(that one security bot accidentially grandfather-paradoxed himself out of existance), but it also weirdly...has characters traveling into the future meet their future selves, who I don't recall to have any recollection of having timetraveled in the first place.(Yeah, that is the odd plotpoint that Totally Spies of all shows did better than Jimmy Neutron. Total plottwist to know)

The whole point about how written encyclopedias are out of date the minute they come off the printing press got me thinking about my college library, and heck even my local public libraries, and how many of their encyclopedias must be out of touch with reality. But then it got my brain racking about how such "obsolete" media really is a product of its time, and how at that point in history, the information was considered accurate by scholarly consensus. If there's one downside to relying on the internet for accurate information, it's how the historical context behind the obsolete information and how it came to be is ever so gradually eroded and lost over time. Books still have a historical purpose for that reason.

With the whole "not really remodeling his house" thing, it is pretty common for extremely rich people to avoid paying for anything, so my take is that Hugh simply decided to stay where the taxes would be lower, and didn't bother with remodeling the house beyond what most guests would see. And I totally get that because if you've ever went to a Lowes or Home Depot for an install job or if you've worked there, those contacts can balloon really quick. For someone who was poor and then came into mind bending amounts of money, Hugh does seem to have a really solid understanding of money that the show might've downplayed. Because you're right, so many people would blow their cash on a mansion without thinking about the costs down the road.

It's also heavily implied that rich Hugh and Judy don't care much about Jimmy, so it makes sense that he'd live in the same room he had in the current timeline (other than throwing some bread crumbs, with the encyclopedia set). I'm always pleased to see people still talking about Jimmy Neutron! It was popular, but I don't feel like it got quite as much attention as some of Nickelodeon's other power hitters. It was also nice, in that era, to see an example of a husband and father who was there for his kid and loved his wife. Hugh was a big comedic relief for the series, but he was always sincere and genuine in a very endearing way.

I honestly kinda like the way Jimmy was acting when not getting what he wanted. Kinda showed some realism to his character. I feel like he usually is portrayed as the boy genius who between him, Carl and Sheen and even his parents to an extent is the more mature one so I kinda like how he showed a genuine childlike reaction to not getting what he wanted. At the same time, I also liked how his experience taught him that there are more important things in life than an encyclopedia set. Also I guess I never really took the time to realize until reaching adulthood how good parents Hugh and Judy are. Especially compared to Timmy Turner's parents.

My guess about the house part is just animation budget limitations, but using that limitation to story build via the lack of notable change in Jimmy's room is a great idea. It's the same notion with them staying where they are. The simple explanation could be limited budget and time to animate more sets. The story explanation can go so much deeper. Utilizing limitations to better tell a story is an ingenuity I'll always appreciate

Hugh definitely earns his place within the Hall of Dads. I have to wonder about this episode though, how exactly are they able to afford Jimmy's lab? Maybe _that's_ why they're pressed on finances. It's not like we see Jimmy collecting any royalties for his inventions. As far as Jimmy goes, you have to give the show credit for reminding us that he _is_ still a child. For all his academic intelligence, it doesn't necessarily mean he has emotional intelligence or maturity yet.

However, there's a second implication that supports your idea too: he uses older versions of things his family replaces, or snitches something and then they have to replace it later. Like the communications toaster. In one episode Judy comments on the running joke, how Jimmy keeps making new inventions out of their toasters, reasoning that they can always use the oven to make toast. So maybe he's just Frankensteining everything together from regular household objects XD

I think its important to mention the money WAS important. Thats why it was so significant that he put it toward the ring. I think its important to mention this because its too easy to try and elevate things by belittling the other thing you gave up, but by doing that you take away from why the decision was so significant in the first place. if the money didn’t matter at all the chose would be hollow. But it did matter, he wanted his duck things like Jimmy wanted his Encyclopedia, thats why the choice was special, because it was an actual sacrifice.

Hugh was the GOAT of cartoon dads. I vividly remembered this episode and its moral because it was a lesson that took me a while to learn as a kid in a similar-ish situation to Jimmy. I come from a middle class family (although I have a bunch of siblings, unlike Jimmy) and parents who care a great deal for us and do their best. There were so many times I or my siblings lamented that our family couldn't afford something one of us wanted because we needed that money for other things. We had financial struggles, but were fortunate enough to never face anything horrible like foreclosure, and even managed to take a few vacations over the years. I don't think I fully appreciated what I had until I was old enough to work and got into my current relationship with my partner.

Even as a kid, I couldn't help smile every time seeing Hugh on screen. He was just a genuine, good-hearted man with such funny and heartwarming moments.

I think Hugh and Judy always put Jimmy first. That would explain why everything that's Jimmy's is the same because everything has been Jimmy's ideal version; his parents would not have an impact on the lab design, and it would make sense for Jimmy to be the one who chose or made his room look the way it does and how going back and forth didn't seem to affect his relationship with his friends. Even with the addition of Helgo, the level of raising Jimmy is identical. It can easily be seen that Hugh wants all the money for the people he cares about, giving gold bars to his son's friends because he can and then giving one of what has to be many to Jimmy himself. Still, if anything, Jimmy would have just been using the gold for experiments, seeing as he didn't need it for money. That also indicates that in either timeline, if it's for Jimmy's education, they do it even at the end of the episode. They give in; if he had not done anything and waited for a short time, he would have learned nothing and had what he wanted. As a footnote, what, if anything, do we know about Hugh's father in the standard timeline? They may have always had a lousy relationship. Lastly, so someone doesn't have to point it out, all these things could be unchanged because it's easier to omit them than try to add them, potentially hurting the flow and overall story.

I never thought about it having grown up without a dad, but at the very least Hugh makes a great role model for how to be a good dad. Don't need to be perfect, but you just need to work hard, love your family and keep your priorities straight. After that things should turn out okay even if it isn't always the best circumstances.

My opinion on the rich parent timeline is that it happened gradually. Hugh probably got a fancier ring with his first paycheck, and they got married and started a family while the chains were still starting to take off, and timeline wise it makes sense that they only started to get large ammounts of money they actually began investing when Jimmy was a newborn or toddler, having them grow busy and way more detatched from their kid. And about their house, my grandparents live in an old neighborhood where the houses are not that big but with decently sized yards. Its become a thing that rich people buy the old houses, demolish everything, and build massive houses with maybe 4 floors underground on the lots with minimal yard space. The "recognizing" Jimmy thing can definitely be justified in the sense that if you see your kid grow up and at one point of his life looks exactly like a kid that gave you great financial advice 15 years ago, it would honestly be kind of silly to suspect theyre the same person somehow

I always love when you tell us stories about your wife and daughter because the tenderness is always there and that's lovely. Now that I think about it, Hugh and Judy Neutron had one of the best marriages on Nickelodeon and in general. They were good parents, too. Present but not overbearing and always supportive of Jimmy, even with his r/iamverysmart tendencies causing chaos at times. This is one of my episodes of the show because it was the usual 'grass isn't always greener, appreciate what you've got' plotline but done without clobbering the audience over the head with it. And Jimmy Neutron is one of my favorite shows of all time. I remember seeing the movie in theaters and I LOVED Libby's makeover later in the show. Also, the way they wrote Jimmy/Cindy and Sheen/Libby was really good. We need more Hugh and Judy Neutrons and less Timmy's Parents/Bob and Miriam Pataki/Peter and Lois Griffin relationships in Media, especially when the Media has a young audience.

Great video! Very thorough. I think it’s also worth noting the way this episode starts, with Jimmy making his friends watch some documentary they completely don’t care about. From the first moment Jimmy’s selfishness is setup as a major theme of this episode, as he’s doing what he wants to do with seemingly no concern for what Carl and Sheen want. It should be obvious his friends would be bored to tears, but that doesn’t even seem to occur to Jimmy, which happens again when he doesn’t change the channel to watch the commercial only he would care about. It sets up that Jimmy isn’t being malicious, but will put his current interests ahead of his friends or, later, his parents well-being. Similarly it doesn’t even occur to Jimmy to ask what Hugh wants to do with his last fifty dollars until after he learns this life lesson. With these short 11 minute episodes, it makes sense the show doesn’t have time to explore the butterfly effect and doesn’t spare time to ask if the Neutrons would have moved or if Jimmy would even be born in this new timeline, they kinda just coast past those questions, but it DOES take time to set-up Jimmy’s selfishness because that’s at the core of the episode.

I personally believe that the reason Hugh becomes emotionally detached isn’t due to being corrupted by wealth. It is because Jimmy told him to not follow his priorities. By breaking his priorities and investing he saw immense gains but lost that emotional part inside of him. And as we saw, him talking about maintaining his priorities was a major theme throughout and shows us the Hugh we love to watch.
