Hint: it's because I can't STAND racism.
If it's not that black people are different from other races by being declared another species, it is that we have successfully been marred, stunted, by the oppressive efforts of the 'white patriarchal hegemony'. Unequivocally. Undoubtedly. I have more to say on 'equality of outcome', and how it will hurt those who are least prepared the most.

ABOUT ME:
I’m an interdisciplinary artist - a musician and painter - based in North Hollywood, California.
My African upbringing and my faith informs my worldview and ultimately the art I create. The unifying factors between the two disciplines of visual art and music are vibrancy and realism. Realism for me is speaking from disadvantage, and color is a reflection of the pursuit of hope.

Exactly, when people tell me black people are being murdered by the police, I ask them if they know of anyone with an ethnic name killed by the police, or if all those people they could think of had American names. Most can agree the names are American. Then I ask, so if it’s mostly American people of color, and not just all people of color, could the problem be the culture and not the race? Many concede and then say slavery has everything to do with the culture in America today, as though none of that happened in Africa or most of the world. Chattel slavery was a wicked evil, and I do see data supporting the claim that police rough up people of color more than other races and that is messed up. I appreciate conversations about CRT, but will never accept for it to be taught and touted as fact.

Simple: Equality generally means equality of opportunity, the philosophy that anyone should have access to the tools necessary to succeed. This is something I very firmly believe in. Equity, on the other hand, means equality of outcome, the philosophy that there should be equal representation of genders and races in careers and education. The latter is horribly toxic because it assumes that there is not equality of outcome, it's because one group is oppressing the other. So it doesn't matter whether, for example, women are less interested in engineering or construction jobs ... they believe that the lack of women in those fields must mean that something is stopping them from accessing those fields and that they are being oppressed. P.S: the image in the thumbnail is actually about equality of opportunity, not equity. All three are given the tools needed to watch the game. Equity would be to stop tall people from watching the game because not enough short people are doing so.

Sorry, but I think you have it backwards. "Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome" (according to the George Washington University, Milken Institute School of Public Health). If you have poor eyesight, and none of the other students in your class have 2020 vision, equality means that you don't get glasses because the other students don't have them. How well will you do in school? Is that equal opportunity?

@@cempionu_aisbergai I guess our discrepancy is in which word has which meaning. I attended an international healthcare conference this morning and one of the slides illustrated "equity" as giving adults and children different size bicycles. I believe that the speaker wasn't even referring to either of those words. I think that her description of what she hates is more like affirmative action or maybe denying people a job because of the color of their skin, thinking that they could never be qualified for certain jobs. It seems to me that she is using the words "equity and equality" in the wrong context.

@Immak I see where you're coming from. I think your explanation of equality and equity is a bit different than how others are using them. In the same scenario, instead of providing underwear, let's say you provide the means to make underwear. This is equality of opportunity. Wear underwear (or not) however you want but the materials are there and the choice is yours. Equity would state that if a man makes boxers and the women makes 2 undergarments, then the state should step in and level the playing field. The underwear usage must be the same. If it were two men and one had boxers and the other briefs, then the law of equity (equality of outcome) would force one wearer to change their underwear.

Maybe equity and equality have nothing to do with race when most people think on these subjects, at least most people on the left. What most people are thinking about is access to health care and education. The conversation has changed from equality to equity because there's proof of equality already existing. For example you mentioned Nigerian immigrants who are economically successful but the people pushing for equity have to ignore that because it contradicts the image you showed earlier. Someone coming all the way from Nigeria, and creating wealth is perceived to be at a greater disadvantage that black people living in America. Another reason I think equity is pushed is because there are many successful black Americans living here. And they all have one thing in common and they'll tell you all the time, they worked very hard. There is proof of concept that black people can be successful in America, which indicates there may already be economical equality And then with equality you also have to talk about equality of output. So the conversation HAD to changed from equality to equity. Just like what's depicted in the picture, some people have an advantage, therefore equality is not sufficient. But here's the thing though, If that pictures is supposed to depict America, you just have to widened it and you'll see that there's stacks of boxes cast off to the side just laying there.

Though I'm guessing the immigrants coming from Nigeria are mostly from well-to-do backgrounds--families who can afford to send their kids to go to college in the US or already come to the US w/ uni degrees from Nigeria. For example, it's not a coincidence that the famous Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie's father was a university professor and her mother worked a university job as a registrar. This is true of most "successful" immigrants--they typically arrive in the US w/ some advantages--whether they come from Africa, India, China, etc. Immigrants who come from Mexico and Latin America are the least well off people from their respective countries, so when they come to the US they typically have to work hard labor jobs and don't have as easy a path to university or financial success. It doesn't matter what your race, gender, or ethnicity is--if you have economic advantages--usually from your immediate family--you will also have educational advantages and will be more likely to be "successful."

@@emileconstance5851 Then that is economic privilege.....not white privilege. When a billionaire like Oprah claims the homeless toothless white man has more privilege than she does due to his whiteness, the majority of rational people are going to think she is crazy. Of course there is privilege being born into a wealthy family, there is privilege with having athletic ability, their is height privilege or beauty privilege in getting selected for jobs, there is IQ privilege, there is having an intact home privilege. And the bottom line is there is not equity from siblings in the same family, how are you going to try and enforce equity in a country as populated and diverse as America? Some school districts are doing away with grades or gifted programs because there were too many asian or white kids compared to black/hispanic kids. I think the Boston public school system said only 30% were black/hispanic......but that 30% of kids is also missing out on the gifted program as well. Mikhail, you are exactly correct, the lingo has to keep changing to push the goal posts further and further. Notice how even the definition of racism had to change. Convenient isn’t it? When groups have equal opportunity but the outcomes are not what they expected, they then still have to claim things aren’t fair, This is shown with feminism is Scandinavian countries, considered the most egalitarian countries. Encouraging women in higher paying STEM type jobs, however it has not had the effect they wanted.....the exact opposite occurred. Fewer women pursued traditionally male dominated engineering, computer science, etc. Winds up when women have a choice, they are not choosing those fields. So how do we then get equity? Force women who don’t want to be engineers to be engineers? I also never notice this argument when it may actually be the white people not succeeding.....for instance the NBA. I never see the argument that like 70% of NBA players are black....so we gotta get get more white NBA players. And if you go by population percentages, like only 13-14% of the NBA should be black players, 60% white, 18% hispanic, etc. I recall listening to Obama give a speech once. He was taking about not having his father around, his mom working crazy hours, spending a lot of time with his grandparents. But I remember him saying he remembers his mom giving him multiplication tables to learn at 5am. And he didn’t want to get up at 5am to review multiplication tables, but he did it. And that is a microcosm of the issue right there. I know my husband has told me a story how Michael Jordan didn’t make his high school basketball team, and he would practice hours on his own to improve. Didn’t Einstein fail a math course? Imagine these men giving up, would have been the world’s loss.

This video randomly popped into my feed. As someone who often has to think about equality and equity from a medical perspective, I think these two words have different perspectives when approaching things. I'll give an example of equality vs. equity in healthcare: say two patients come to my office and one is Spanish-speaking while the other is English-speaking and ~90% of the people from my community are English speakers. Approaching this from an equality standpoint would mean that I would provide equal service, having both of my consultations with each patient in English. An equity approach would recognize that in order for my Spanish-speaking patient to benefit in the same way as my English-speaking patient, a Spanish Interpreter would be required in addition to my consultation. You can see that equity is not equal in treatment but equal in outcome. Getting an interpreter meant more resources and more time spent in the Spanish-speaking patient's encounter, also acknowledging that the English-speaking patient did not receive the additional interpreter service (as they appropriately did not need it). As for maybe connecting this to your video, when it comes to race and medicine, because there's data showing that health outcomes are not equal among races/ethnic groups there is a large interest in "health equity" nowadays because it focuses on how we can achieve equal outcomes for everyone. And this shift in focus should come as no surprise since as health care providers we want all our patients to have the best chance of living happier and healthier lives. I think a big question is "why are there differences in health outcomes among people of different races?" + "What can we do about it?"

There is no need for equity if people take responsibilty for themselves.

In this video, Kimi is talking about equity vs equality in a social justice context. I believe that it would have to be different than in a health context since you want everyone to have the same health outcome: healthy and happy. However, in a social context, it would be disastrous to have everyone have the same societal outcome (communism in practice really showed us how miserable everyone was). I really appreciate your comment Ryan since being a premed student, I took a public health class that taught us about health equity. You seem to acknowledge that there is a metaphor in the picture but metaphor is invalidated because you saw something racist in the pic. Since race is what you see 1st you won’t allow yourself to explore the metaphor? Sorta like throwing the baby out with the bath water ain’t it? I guess the question for me to you is how should the picture gave looked so it doesn’t interfere with the metaphor. Should all the people have been white standing on the boxes? Oh yeah. Powers comes from doing things yourself.Empowerment to me is like Coffee. I see so many people get energized or inspired when they hear the word. Why "equity"? Good question. When I was in college, we talked about how "equal" doesn't mean "same". (e.g. equal pay doesn't mean a part-timer and full-timer get the same paycheck.) Now it's about "equity" doesn't mean "equal". New jargon for the same point? NO! We used to give extra money to "majority black colleges". But when those colleges became fully integrated, the colleges still wanted the extra money. So they started calling themselves "historically black colleges". The past never changes, so they can never lose funding tied to history. "Equity" is about justifying extra resources for historically oppressed groups. It doesn't matter that slavery, Jim Crow and red lining are gone. They existed in the past, and that history will forever justify an extra helping for their victims, the descendants of those victims, and anyone with a vaguely similar skin tone.

Equity is forcing a desired outcome. Most families work together as a collective and giving your kid your box so they can see the game is normal (even if the Dad’s view was rendered slightly obscured. If the depiction was of 3 independent adults you would expect the tall fella to give up his box for something of value from the short fella. That’s capitalism, mutual exchanges benefitting both. The images aren’t racist but they meet the new post modernist neo Marxist criteria of an advantaged man (by virtue of his height) oppressing the short man. The tall man must be forced to handover his box, even though he spent 2 hrs making it, while the short fella is a lazy libtard.

I believe they are using "equity" as a way of practicing "applied postmodernism" in policy and institutions. The company's and world leaders belonging to the world economic forum is really who has been pushing most of this. Their newest way of introducing this is in their ESG scoring that corporate companies are doing. They have adopted all these theories as fact ..since the most powerful world leaders and companies belong to this group that is why we are seeing it so heavily.

That's also why these mega-corporations like Disney keep pushing all this shit, despite losing their asses because of it. Logic would tell you that if a company is losing the kind of money that Disney is on say the Star Wars franchise, or any number of companies that have borne out the phrase "get woke, go broke", that those companies would get the message and change tactics, but they're not. They seem to be determined to ram this shit down our throats whether we like it or not, even when it causes them to lose millions, or even billions of dollars, and frankly? That should scare the hell out of everybody.

could you tell us what postmodernism is and why is it very problematic?
@scratchpenny
@scratchpenny 3 жыл бұрын
@@wapleviathan4006 This is a challenging question. There is no one definition of 'postmodern.' A lot of reading is needed to understand postmodernism, and I am by no means very knowledgeable about this topic. But one thing I know that postmodernists often claim is that there is no truth. That is, there is no truth that is objective. I would say this is impossible because there are many things that we can all agree on that are part of objective reality. But the postmodernist takes the position that there is only perceived or relative truth. This is how we get to such notions of gender being entirely a social construct without any bases in biology. And although that notion is popular and accepted by some authorities (APA, WHO, etc.), it is not based on objective factors because some elements of gender are, in fact, linked to biological sex. What would be the point of gender identity if it were entirely socially constructed? The answer is there wouldn't be a point - gender and sex are related and used for survival. It's a contradiction because biology and culture/society are interrelated in many ways. This is just one example where postmodern ideas fail society by being unusable for human progress.

You went on a tangent there. Equity as far as the poster, it misses the mark completely. Since all the people are shown as black and none of them has an optimal view of the game just moving boxes around really doesn't help anyone. Taking the fence away and using the boxes as benches would have been more compelling. But that might have given people ideas like society is actually open to everyone and you can participate as a family.

Certainly there is the element of watching the game for free while others have to pay. That this is hypocritical, I was looking at if from the graphic design angle. The poster undoes its own message by diluting it in favor of a terrible analogy. The information of the poster implies certain things. One the individuals pictured are a part of a group. Two the individuals don't have enough of a relationship to each other to interact with one another. Three their interest is limited to restricted observers. All 3 messages are negative and denigrate the connection between the individuals and implies that there is no desire to find the means to participate with the rest of the audience. Equity that is inadequately illustrated here is a terrible thing when forced because it causes resentment. There is plenty of generosity of spirit which has been taken out completely and that is the greatest shame!

Equality deals with equal opportunity. Equity deals with equal outcome. There is no basis for arguing that there is no equality of opportunity because the data shows clearly that all people have equal opportunity in their lives. Equity is not concerned with lack of opportunities but rather lack of spoil or outcome. Equality recognises that not everyone will be successful business people but can be successful at what they do and reap the rewards. Equity does away with incentive. It says you deserve to have the same as everyone else regardless of what you do to achieve it. Equality is vital to a thriving community. Equity crushes community because there is no longer incentive to add anything to it.

If you don’t pay your bills on time, your score lowers. Are you saying black people are incapable of paying their bills on time and therefore have lower credit scores? Maybe people think it’s ok to pay bills late or not pay at all. Why would a bank give you a loan if you aren’t going to pay it back? Then 1st time I heard someone use "equity" was Jane Elliott in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said "we don't want to be equal we want equity". Saying we're all equal is saying we're all the same bc that's what equal means, and the truth is no we're not all equal bc we're all different and that's fine but we want equity which means we want fairness that means not everyone is treated the same but everyone is treated fairly. I think this makes sense bc some ppl need more than others, some less and that's fine bc we all have different situations. I think that's what the picture is trying to show, that treating everyone the same is fine but we should treat ppl according with their situation aka fairness aka equity. That's how I see it I may be wrong that's just my pov and I'm totally fine if it's wrong

The image was originally used for individuals with disabilities who are in the mainstream system ( school or work,etc) I came upon this image /concept 20 years ago in my studies. All 3 in the image have a disability but need different assistance, therapies, assistive devices, etc to function at optimal level to be as productive as those without disabilities. Some need 1 or 2 assistive devices (the boxes) others more to achieve the desired outcome. Hence, they needed equity (different needs and assistive devices) and not equality ( all get the same). It was and is still effective in doing that. It somehow ended up being used as a political tool by many for various other reasons and motives.

I am not here saying it is not a problem, I am hear saying educate me, explain to me why you see it as a problem so I can see it from your point of view and understand more about the world. Who decides what resources to allocate and to whom in the case of equity? It's money from everyone else, money from people who did make good choices in life. Also, equity means equal outcomes, not equal opportunities to try and achieve. Why has it got to be about race? Gosh it's 2021, their is no such thing as race, every person is a different mix of ancestors from different places, even a brother and sister from the same parents will have a different mix of the DNA from those parents, and those parents will have a different mix of DNA from people from different countries, regions, towns, tribes. I am a little blurry on your position, based on previous videos and the squirrelly nature of this topic, having been overintellectualized, ( I know that isn’t really a word but, hey). I mean on a very basic level, 3 people stuck in a situation with limited food, would figure the best way to survive longest, meaning caloric needs must be considered. So, where is the line? That image was a bit concerning I agree, but I am interested in your thoughts on the basics, as pertain to my hunger question. Then what can we build upon those agreed basics. Maybe the switch from using equality to equity is really a bit of gaslighting. I saw something similar years ago in the odd debate about "bathroom parity." Some people argued that an equal number of bathrooms for men and women in public facilities wasn't fair, that there it should be 1:2 in favor of women. Calling 1:2 equal is too obviously a lie, so the term parity was used. I see this unfortunate but naturally instinctive trick used a lot in life. People trying to get others to believe things that benefit others and might even be harmful to the believer. Politics, religion, emploers, coworkers, spouses, car salesmen. Most trying to plant exploitive ideas in others' minds.
