The problem with those lifts is, that the protection bar is one for all. Dad is bigger than his son, so the bar didn't protect the son but leaves a gap where he obviously slipped through. It can happen so fast, as the lift is jerking from time to time very rough..

For those that are asking how this happened? I can speak from personal experience. I was 8-9 and had to sort of hop up onto the lift and it was snowy/icy. My butt slid right off as the lift was going up (obviously, we weren’t near as high as this). My mom had one arm, my dad the other and I was hanging there as the chairlift kept going and going until other passengers got the attention of the lift operator. I was and still am an avid skier and wasn’t misbehaving, etc., I just literally slid off and the bar that comes down doesn’t protect little ones from sliding off lol. Hope this helps explain to those thinking these kids were screwing around…I mean, maybe they were, but not necessarily.

Yes and kids are much smaller and thinner so youd be much like a feather floating around in a large vessel, nothing to keep you in. I remember as a kid just having to grip on as hard as I could to stop being propelled out of some of those amusement park rides that had no safety belts back then, it dis make the rides less enjoyable.

@@joyceyang6976 or if possible the lift a little lower. I don’t know. I was always a shorty and still only 5’4” but when I saw this it instantly reminded me of that situation. I remember we were about 12-15 feet so if I had fallen, it would’ve hurt and I remember thinking to myself, Jeez, are they ever going to stop this thing. Luckily, with my mom and dad’s help and strength, along with my own, I was able to get my butt firmly planted. My parents were both strong, but I imagine in a sitting position, I weighed probably 50-55 pounds, skis. boots, and 14 layers of clothes, it probably wasn’t that easy. Thank you guys for listening and not jumping to conclusions. I was reading the comments when I initially commented and it was “kids screwing around, the kids fault, etc.” and whereas I don’t have much tolerance for disrespectful morons, I actually had first hand experience of how this very bizarre situation could have happened and felt the need to share. Skis are meant to pop off easily in event of a wreck or accident. So, likely he clanged his feet together or used 1 foot to stomp on the other foot to cause them to fall. It would've been disastrous, imo, if he tried to land on the net 🥅 w\them bc they could've gotten tangled up in there or even if they popped off as supposed to his body could hit the very hard bindings. So, while there's no way to know for sure w\o the whole video, that's what he did. It seems less likely that he could've pulled his leg up to release 1 handed & Doubtful the Dad could do it while remaining holding him. & Equally doubtful the other passenger could've reached. The only other way that might have worked is somebody getting on the chair that's used for emergency lift evac. I worked at a ski resort several yrs & even tho Im NOT a skier or boarder, we all had to learn the chair evacs. Basically using a pulley system by throwing a rope attached to an emergency chair (basically like a plank or swing to pic what I mean) & it's anchored by 1 person & another used to guide. You scoot out off the lift & onto the plank\swing & lowered to the ground. But it takes time to get & set up. & If they HAD that there then it would make more Sense to pull it up to him or even somebody ride it up & grab hold of him to lower. So, just seems likely he kicked them off. So, I said I'm not a skier or boarder, however my hubby was & worked at the same ski resort as a teenager back when we were dating. So, he took me once & It was an EPIC failure on my part. But I DID learn the importance of knowing your weight! I see myself as bigger than I am even when I was skinny. So, I overestimated my weight thinking if I under bid it then I'd break the skis. But that's not the reason they ask the weight. They calibrate the skis so they will pop off when you crash or tumble so your legs don't get twisted & broken. So, when I ended up cartwheeling down the steep slope headed straight for the expert course, I got knee all f*cked up & sprained bc it twisted when I tumbled bc they were made to w\stand more of a jolt due to my overstating my body weight! OUCH!

I told him to look straight ahead, bend his knees when he landed and he would be fine. The snow was deep and fresh, so he landed in a big floof and was fine. He didn't even cry. At least that ended well. This happened to my sister at exactly that age too. For all those asking "how do you get in that situation", back then (think over 25 years ago) those lifts would actually hit you at their full, actual running speed, so a small child would have to be helped on by a grown-up person, or the controller would have to slow down the entire line (or even shut it down) completely. So that time the controller didn't slow it down and as she got on, she was still on the edge of the seat and as she tried to wiggle herself backwards she immediately slipped forward due to the angle of the lift (which tends to swing after it "hits" people). That was when my father made his own big mistake and tried to bring her back up, which is basically impossible, so she was left hanging for a while just like the kid in this video. The controller NEVER noticed (a guy in his 60s, 1-2 years away from retirement) and never stopped the line, so basically after a point nothing could be done by anyone! She hang on for about as far along the ride as this kid, so she was over 6 meters (20 feet) high above rock-hard early morning icy snow. And then.... her hands slipped out of her gloves. I am just a couple of years older than her, this was a huge shock to me. At first I was worried she had died, because she wasn't moving, then they told me she'd broken her leg, at which time I thought she wouldn't walk again... Anyway the consequences were far worse for her than for myself, this DID actually cause her never to ski again (and she was doing great up to that point!) her leg didn't heal properly and had to put in a casket a 2nd time after a few months and my very athletic sister went down a spiral of basically zero activity for over a year and gaining far too much weight, which stayed with her ever since (and has unfortunately gotten much worse). Could this have been another "miracle recovery" story? Probably so, but this is to let you know, not everything works out fine for everyone all the time. True story, unfortunately. :(

If they can't sit still, don't listen to you or follow instructions, or act impulsively without regard to safety... They don't belong on a chair lift! This is NOT an amusement park ride and there is no seatbelt holding you in. Also, if your children are going on a lift, sit WITH your children! @cautiouslasagna 110% depends on what u land on in terms of what body part lands first the angle of how u land on that said body part everyone just thinks ok from that high if u land on your feet you would just have broken legs pelvis or both but even that can kill u there are story's of people land on there feet from a height that does just break there legs but they land on them in a way the femer breaks and goes through there femoral artery and bleed to death in minutes or there femer goes into there abdomen just right causing internal bleeding die from that it happens from time to time also saying it depends on what u land on in terms of the type of ground below u big difference between a grassy field and a concrete road in this case it is snow but it's compacted most likely man made snow that has a snowcat grooming it daily its more like a cold block of ice he would have landed on not much different that landing on concrete if the lift was over an area that in not ski trail and had even just like 3 or 4 foot of non compacted natural snow accumulation and the snow your falling into had not been exposed to a warm sunny day or a few days that were just above freezing and then a cold spell hit turning that snow into again almost like ice or cause a thick layer of ice like snow there would have been no problems at all at that point it would be like falling into a foam pit just probably would have had to been dug out or had help getting out of the snow
