Exploring deep into the backstreets of Shanghai, China.
Watch as Jack, Paige and Max dive deeper into the backstreets of Shanghai show you where the real Shanghainese are living. During this video we spend time getting to know more about the Longtang's and the people who live within them. We meet Chinese grandmas and discuss life living in a Longtang that has been under renovation for the last 4 months with their neighbours. The Longtang's are alleys full of surprises and can't believe our eyes (or ears) when we stumble across a Chinese speaking bird... We head deeper and deeper into the backstreets when we find a convenience store selling everything you may need and more. After a long afternoon of exploring, we head to a local Shanghainese restaurant to have lunch, enjoying Vitasoy, Dayao soda orange, and some delicious food!

🚨STATEMENT 🚨 This video IS NOT a negative video. I have already seen too many incorrect comments claiming that I have bad intentions. Just like my Beijing Hutong video I want to show the real everyday life of the people who live in side streets of these megacities. These are the great people whose cultures, life-long work, and heritage, these cities have been built on and instead of showing the Bund of Shanghai, I want to show the real everyday people. The construction work on the Grandma's home in NOT negative and in the video, if you watch it, you will see that I am curious as to what is happening so instead of assuming, we actually ask a construction worker who informs us of their government-led project to renovate the exterior of these 100-year-old heritage houses to preserve the identity of the Long Tangs for years to come. I said I feel sorry for the grandma, but this doesn't mean I think that the work shouldn't happen. If MY grandma wanted work done on her house, like a new roof for example, even if she asked for it to be done and paid for it to be done, I would still feel sorry for her that her peaceful home had loud noises and construction men all over it - it's part of life but I will not be criticized for showing empathy to an elderly woman who's residence has become noisy. Again, that doesn't mean I somehow disagree with the construction. I love China and especially showing the everyday people of this country, that's what I'm passionate about. I wouldn't try my best to learn Mandarin and even some Shanghainese, just to go and make a negative video about that place - that would be stupid.

What sets your vlogs apart from other youtubers is that your focus is not on the usual places of interest, which honestly is flooding all over youtube. Rather, your angle is more down-to-earth in trying to understand more about the locals' mundane lifestyle. Since you can't please everyone and if some people can only accept 100% positive things but not a fair bit of negative albeit you're showing the raw footage / truth, then so be it. Renovation of old district is a headache of big cities in China, especially in Shanghai, because the shanghaines are extremely good at bargaining for their own benefits but at what costs to the city and general public? Not their problem. That's why Shanghai has the biggest slums among China cities, and these people live in "slums" are in fact super rich.

The first community you visited at the corner of 南京西路 and 陕西北路 is where my grandparents lived for 40 years. It was built by the Europeans like 100 years ago. Brings back my childhood merories watching your video. And about the strawberries, there is a very short period of time in late spring every year where you can get fresh in-season stawberries. They are jucy red and sweet, a little mushy and can quickly go off. But these strawberries beat those big whitish plasticky flavourless ones you get from the greenhouse the rest of the year by a mile. They are the only straberries I eat. We don't use "chi le ma" as greeting anymore. They was at least 40 years in the past. Please don't say that again, it's a little cringy. Great video as usual.

In Shanghai, these older buildings generally lack independent kitchen and bathroom spaces. Typically, 3 to 4 families share one kitchen, creating significant fire hazards. Very few people in this old city area have independent bathrooms, and the vast majority of residents need to deposit their feces in containers at home and transport them to designated locations outside to dispose of them. If you are lucky enough that your house was included in the government's old city renovation plan, the government will buy your house at a price higher than the usual market rate (commonly known as demolition compensation). The government's prerequisite for successfully demolishing the old city area is to obtain the consent of the residents in two consecutive votes. In the first vote, more than 90% of the residents need to approve the government's demolition plan for it to pass. In the second vote, 85% of the residents must agree to the government's compensation plan (i.e., be satisfied with the amount of compensation) for it to pass. Only after both votes pass can the demolition be officially initiated. The compensation plan for each renovation site is publicly available and can be checked online. On average, each household can receive compensation of 4 to 5 million RMB (equivalent to 550,000 to 690,000 USD), with the amount depending on the size of your house. Residents can choose to accept the government's proposal to purchase houses specifically designated for demolition households in the suburbs of Shanghai (at a lower price than the market rate), or they can choose to purchase commercial housing themselves. However, whether such a situation can happen where you live entirely depends on urban planning and local government finances. In other words, if you're "unlucky," you might not be able to benefit from such policies for many years. Just like the elderly woman in the video who has lived there her whole life, their housing conditions might be better than the ones mentioned earlier, but not by much. Fortunately, if your place doesn't get to enjoy the aforementioned policies, the city government will still regularly allocate funds to repair public parts of your house, including corridors, exterior walls, and surrounding infrastructure, just like what's happening in the video. Now, this is my personal opinion. As a tourist, it is natural to want to see some of the city's history preserved, but only the original residents can truly understand the inconvenience of living in these old buildings. For the original residents, if your home undergoes a significant renovation project, it means you've missed out on a government-led demolition project (typically, when they want to improve their living conditions by selling their houses to buy others, they can only sell for 2-3 million RMB. This price is far lower than the compensation offered by the government). In other words, it means they won't receive a generous demolition compensation agreement for at least several years. This is why the elderly woman in the video doesn't seem particularly happy. For someone her age, she might not to see the next large-scale old city renovation project.

Don't underestimate these old houses that look shabby. One set costs more than 10 million yuan, and some old houses are worth hundreds of millions of yuan. It's amazing, isn't it? If these houses were not valuable, the locals who drive Porsche Maybach would not live here.

One thing that stands out to what's so common in other similar places in most Western cities, throughout the exploration in the back alley of Shanghai, I did not see any drug dealers, hookers, beggars, etc harassing you for money....and all the narrow streets are relatively rubbish free, and no homeless people around either.

It looks like you stepped into the inner-city slums, which are called 棚户区. Those rundown houses are very cramped, and most units don't have a bathroom or kitchen. Typically, 3-4 people live in a 300 square foot space. the irony is that there are always some upscale apartments next to those neighborhoods, which cost millions of dollars.

Now that you are in Shanghai, I highly recommend you to see Chinese musicals and dance dramas! It can be said that Shanghai has gathered many outstanding actors in the country, and has the most novel theater operation mode! To some extent, it represents cultural trends. The Huangpu district (which is very close to the Bund) has a number of very popular theaters. If you're interested, I can recommend you a few shows

Let me tell you the truth about "Have you eaten yet". At least in Beijing, since the beginning of the last century, people's standard of living was not high, and eating was the biggest thing, people would meet and greet each other and ask each other "Have you eaten yet", and if the other person looked embarrassed and did not answer positively, it meant that the other person had a hard time lately, and the person who was having a hard time would be entertained, and the person who greeted him would help the other person, such as sending some grain. If the person does not answer positively, it means that he or she has been living in a difficult situation. Of course, the situation of not being able to afford to eat did not exist several decades ago, but such a way of greeting has been retained. This kind of greeting behavior is regarded as the greatest goodwill. People who really care about you will care whether you have enough to eat or not, and if you are starving, then they will help you with some food to solve the problem of eating, or even help you fundamentally, such as helping you to find a better job, or other problems. You can think of the question "Have you eaten?" You can think of this question as "How have you been?" Of course, "Have you eaten?" is a much kinder and more tactful way of asking "How have you been?"

Lol this is absolutely wrong. "This kind of greeting behavior is regarded as the greatest goodwill. " It'll be only considered as a weird move if a foreigner greets a local stranger with "Have you eaten". AND " "Have you eaten?" is a much kinder and more tactful way of asking "How have you been?"" this is wrong too, 最近怎么样(how have you been?) can't be replaced by 吃了吗(have you eaten), this just doesn't make sense

You guys did a great job showing the world the old and neighborly part of China cities. The construction work is paid by the government, and some older people prefer to live in there old houses, since they know all the neighbor and the surroundings. It is easier for them to go the markets, hospitals and majiong center. Don't mind the trolls. We Chinese know this places and we are not ashamed to show is side of China to the world.

The old house in Longtang is real Shanghai/China, the fancy modern new highrise apartment complex is also real Shanghai/China. If you meant "normal" by "real" then in fact the normal Chinese people majority are living in hundreds of Chinese cities with good infrastructure and in those modern apartment with a good living standards. It's most of the old who still stay in Longtang because they have spent their whole time there, they may own a modern apartment somewhere else, their children may live in one of these apartment, but it doesn't mean that they are the majority people with a normal living condition. You do see more old than young in Hutong and Longtang, right? However, China is huge, there are always huge population in different level. But we can see the change over the decades. In the past more people lived in Longtang or in rural area but now more people live in modern cities. This is the change brought by fast economy development, support from government, and hardwork of Chinese people, and this is the real life of China.
