After getting divorced last year, I took the opportunity to improve all areas of my life. This channel has helped me to push myself in so many ways. I lost 95 lbs and have used John's videos to help me rebuild a new, better looking and much better fitting wardrobe. I now look at old pictures of myself and just shake my head. The knowledge I've gained from this channel has changed my life. Thanks, John!

It's natural to wonder if different choices earlier in life could have prevented a divorce. It's often the case that we only make significant changes after experiencing adversity. For myself, I made some major changes in my fifties that had a positive impact on my life and inadvertently inspired my wife to do the same. We look and feel better than ever and have a great relationship. I have to give credit to John, who encouraged many of these changes without even realizing it.

I'm a full time caregiver for my wife with Alzheimer's and I make a point of dressing both of us nice. It would be easy to spend the day in pajamas but I feel better and making her look nice also makes me feel better. Earlier this year she had home health coming and the physical therapist told us that we were some of the best dressed people he visited.

If you dress well and take care of yourself , chances are you will be more positive and live longer . I dont do it for compliments , I do it for me . Oh and listening and taking tips from men over 40 👍

I don't care what other people think about me. But I do care that other people understand what I think about myself. The way we present ourselves plays such a huge part in that. Simple things like posture, grooming, and clothing can speak so much louder than words.

Hi John, after my divorce, I really work on myself. One way was to present myself in a more confident manner. I am often told that I’m “ too dressed up” when all that I have on is an Oxford and chinos. Either way, it makes me feel better about myself and it gives me more confidence to dress better.
@doctorsuarez Жыл бұрын
It definitely helps you feel more confident, but it also just helps in so many subtle ways without being “what other people think of me.” Every time you walk into a hotel lobby or ask where the bathroom is you’re giving yourself just that extra little edge of charisma that opens doors and puts people around you at ease. It’s also just nicer for everyone else, and given how slobby so many people are, even a middling effort gives you an advantage.

great video. I have been “dressing better” for years now. I often receive compliments at work on my clothing- even women saying “ I wish my husband dressed better. Unfortunately, (or fortunately) it’s easy to dress better then most men and stand out because most folks just don’t seem to care that much about their appearance. My brother uses the “ I don’t care what other people think of me” line often. I will continue to be mindful of my appearance because I have experienced first hand the difference in how people interact with you when you are well dressed.

Once again well said John. Dress for yourself and not for others….part of self confidence comes from looking good in what you’re wearing. If you look good you feel good. It comes through that way in others eyes as well. Have a great summer! Peace, health and happiness to you!

I have taken this advice to heart and noticed how it changes things. I see many men dressed as overgrown teenagers where I live on the weekends especially. I think the taking it up a notch combined with a healthy mental attitude makes a huge impression. Even a t-shirt and jeans combination can work, especially with good looking shoes or boots, situational awareness being key. Not a fan of Jordan but he makes an excellent point here. Thanks again John for all you do here.

I dress well for MYSELF. It just makes me feel great and boosts my mood. When dressing well, I never have to worry about feeling poorly about how I look if I should meet someone whilst I’m out and about. Rightly or wrongly, people’s initial perceptions are formed in the first 30-45 seconds of meeting. It takes further time to listen to peel back the layers. Dressing looking like one just rolled out of bed or ready to scrub the kitchen floor doesn’t send a positive message does it. 🤔 #Legend

Legend!! Thanks for these tips John!! Growing up in the U.K., business type school uniforms with blazers and ties for the boys were the mandatory national standard...even in public schools back in the 80s. It taught us as kids back then how to dress professionally for the professional world once we graduated. Still wear business suits to the office here in South Florida as I work in the courthouse. I'm not a lawyer so I don't have to wear a suit, but I do for myself and my self respect. It's not to impress anyone.. it's just how I was raised and yet I still get the respect from men and admiration from women....because they don't know WHO they are greeting when they greet me!! It also makes you feel better about yourself!! Even on "casual Fridays" I up my game on my causal dress!! Someone once said "How you dress is how you want to be addressed" and that's so true!! 👍

Thank you so very much for posting. I live in New York and it's currently a or perhaps was always a oxymoron of men's fashion practicality. Once the fashion capital of the east coast at least with a throbbing garment district with all the ancillary industries and communities feeding it, it's changed quite a bit. I was once an athleisure body boy BEFORE it was a trend, so many years ago, when most men across the board were dressing up, regardless of what anyone thought, it was the norm. But I've always known the importance of how in my youth how my clothing impacted my OWN experience and in turn how others responded to me. I'm a suit wearer. Summer suit, winter suit, I always have an ensemble of some sort at the ready. And yes, the summer scorchers put me squarely in the air conditioning 😅. I noticed and envied, especially since I've aged, how women NO MATTER the day or occasion are ALWAYS on another level when it comes to their presentation to the world. I admired that and wanted them to have something good to look at too, so I immediately changed my groove. Loafers are great. The Alden suede/ leather tassel version is beautiful/ sturdy. Again, thank you for your the sharing of your experiences and expertise.

I have found one major downside to dressing well, I’m a working musician and when I dress well at my solo gigs I tend to not sell any merch, it’s like people look at me and think “I’m not giving him any money, he’s clearly got plenty of his own” I’m sell way more stuff when I go with just jeans and a T shirt.

For me it’s not about other people’s perceptions although I agree that’s reality. It’s about being multidimensional and appreciating the esthetics of color, fit and fabrics. Look at photos from the 1950-60s - suits and dresses. I like todays open rules but a nice suit that you chose, or shoes, allow you to transform on the spot. They’re conversation starters. Casual dress is great, but so is taking it to the next level.

It first hit me when I was about 34 and my dress sense was still roughly the same from my student days and I didn't really care about how I looked, until 2 guys got on the same train carriage going home from work, both late 40's possibly early 50's. One dressed very well (For example, Brown Brogues, dress jeans, blue shirt, nice watch and a Tweed Sports coat) while the other resembled Steve Buscemi from the "How do you do Fellow Kids" Meme, cap and all. One looked great, the other was the butt of jokes by other travellers on the carriage long after they left. The well dressed guy, a little over 10 years on is still among the first people I think of on how a older gent should dress and the template I hold myself against and the other guy, a cautionary tale, for trying to recapture long gone youth or those days when I don't feel like making the minimum effort when I step outside

Right on point as usual John. I find it difficult to believe that grown man honestly doesn't feel better about themself when their dress is "elevated". Come on, I would be hard-pressed to be convinced that a man in sloppy sweatpants and t-shirt doesn't feel better even a pair of jeans and better shirt choice so long as those clothes fit appropriately. Now if the same individual hasn't bought any new clothes and their old better clothing choices are too tight and they simply refuse to go shopping that's an entirely different story and question. You need to respect yourself enough to care.

A few weeks ago I checked into the Shelbourne in Dublin (only 5 star hotel in Ireland) with my 90 year old mother who lives in the Florida Keys. She said out of the blue how good it was to see men dressed well and well groomed!. She then went on to say how good it is to seen men in white shirts with ties. I agreed and remarked there were no rediculous haircuts. These were men of different ethnities. All of them were clean shaven. Wha a relief that at least some men understand. I wish it would catch on. I used to like beards. Now, men don't shave heir necks and it looks terrible. And, that diabolical looking soul goatee is worn out. I asked, "What's wrong with young men today?" Over 80% commented on how they dressed - baggy pants, hanging low and ill-fitting pants and shirts, underwear showing, sloppy appearance. Then I started to point out men of our age and how they looked. They suddenly had excuses for their sloppy appearance - pants low because of weight, underwear showing because of the lack of a belt, sloppy t-shirts and pants for mobility issues, etc. The bottom line, it was OK for their age group to dress like that, but young men had to dress better. 🫣

Spot on. My wife and I always notice, in Vegas, in particular, couples that are at dinner or whatever and the woman is nicely dressed with a dress on and nice shoes, and the dude has his best Ed Hardy t-shirt and Rainbow sandals on, often accessorized with baseball cap. WTF?

Exactly.

I dress accordingly in places where others are dressed the same. However, I like to wear jeans and t-shirts (in warm weather) according to my own personal tastes in public places such as amusement places where plenty of other people are dressed the same way regardless of my age so I won’t be discriminated against.

In these days of MGTOW and men walking off into this solitary lifestyle. We need to do things to make ourselves feel better. I love casual yet "grown up" clothing on the weekend because I am a grown man and I am not a child anymore. I love wearing a suit some days because I look amazing in it. But I also love a good polo when necessary or button down shirt or even a henley. I'm also a big fan of these minimal colors and wearing actual watches and not digital watches. It makes me feel good to be a man. I have the grey hairs to prove it and it makes me excited for what's next.

My pet peeve for middle-aged men - backwards baseball caps. 😬 I ditched my flip flops years ago and all my baseball caps. T-shirts with logos about 4 years ago thanks to John and other fashion channels. #legend

How about shorts? Golf shorts vs denim shorts? Can a polo shirt go with denim shorts? 🤔

fashion depends in which part of the world you're at. You wouldn't be rocking a suit in a tropical country, i.e. the Philippines or during a hot summer. Choose your clothes accordingly and, obviously, do not wear flip flops unless you're walking to the beach.

First, as a guy who wears sweaters whenever the weather permits; I really love yours, great choice. Second, there is a neurological reason for the feelings you describe by doing it for yourself, and Jordan Peterson can explain that way better than I can. Basically, being the best dressed individual in the group makes your brain release hormones that assist you in becoming the leader of that group. All else being equal, the best dressed wins. It is why male peacocks have tails.
