I think a great idea would be to create a catalog with models of different ages and body types in different outfits. That would give your viewers an idea of what to look for. Before photos, showing the faux pas and then after photos with the right style, so we can see the difference with our own eyes.

Really well done. I find that the older I get (58) the more important fit becomes. I mean fit of the clothes and my fitness. Being in great shape makes all my clothes look better and enables me to wear a larger variety of clothes. I think fashion youtubers should talk more about exercise and diet. Thanks John.

Yes, but it must be hard for gents over a certain age to keep moving to stay fit because of arthritic joints etc, like it is for ladies, too. Though right exercises and proper diet do help such conditions immensely, I found. And, also, by a certain age, one has earned the right to take life a little easier and enjoy a few simple pleasures eg sleep in of a cold wintry morning, instead of going out jogging(go for a long walk in the afternoon, instead). You are 3ntitled to eat something nice or have a wine or beer or a cigarette, too. It won't do anything that's not going to happen to us all, sooner or later... But, if you wish to make it "later", it is wise to make it only occasional and just stick to one of whatever your voice good/beverage etc is. Other than in very exceptional medical cases, "just one" is unlikely to kill you and might even lift mood, ease stress, create joy and help you last longer. But, despite best of intentions tooany kilos will creep on and refuse to come off and ,for others, noatter how much they eat, they just can't beef up, as they'd like to. That is where clever dress and style tricks can help you look and feel great at any age. The older Mani's always more sedate and dignified, generally, in his style choices. He can still wear cheerful colour, patterned shirts etc. Just not too much of it. You are no longer a little boy or teenager. Your age and demeanour asserts "Respect, please. I've been around like than the rest of you. I know a thing or twoore than you about life, this world. Like how stupid it is to deliberately wear torn jeans with bare knees popping out and rubber thongs in mid winter sub zero temperatures..Like some young trendy dudes do. And baseball caps worn back to front won't keep sun out of your eyes or protect from skin cancers growing on your face...". Oif I were an older gent with a few weight issues or overweight, I'd stock to simple clean, uncluttered styles, firm non knitted fabrics, except for a fine polo neck or winter jumpers one must have. Pale warmer shades eg beige will fatten, cooler shades eg blues will slim you.Avoid chopping your body in half eg by wearing a contrasting colour top to your trousers, which are best without pleats and too many biking pockets you will be tempted to stuff with wallets, big handkerchiefs, keys etc and they will bulge and make you look even bigger still. A slim wallet that sits flat is probably better. But, of you must carry keys etc, why not get a plain simple stylish leather "man bag" to carry these around, along with your cigarette lighter, fancy cigarette case that makes a style statement when some lonely gorgeous widow asks if you have a light on you next time you go to the RSL. And of course you do. As you open your man bag to pull out your golden lighter you whisper in a sexy low mellow, older gent voice "I am your light, my dear... All I need is your smile, to shine..." And you're in with a pretty good chance, even at age 70+ because even older gents can be very appealing to women, of all ages. The trick is to never try to hide your grey hair or beard or even your wrinkles but to make theost of them and groom these well because it is precisely your age that attracts certain types of women. They love it. Many of these women are very desirable and could have any number of sexy, virile handsome younger guys, even rich successful ones. But they prefer the sensible, mature, more dignified older man. But not just any old man. He needs to look as if he's going to stick around for many more years because there is nothing more emotionally distressing to such women than to fall for an older man, but realise he won't be around forever. Oh, they know that reality, but don't want to be funded of it eg by seeing their favourite old man lover looking very shabby, like he has given up on life. To soften so they are still evidence of having been around a long time ie wise etc, just pop a Vitamin E tablet or eat it, daily. Does eo fees for vitality, but check with your doc first, if you have medical conditions. Then break another Vitamin E capsule and rub it's oil into the deeper wrinkles. And avoid too much frequent scrubbing the skin with soap. It dries it out too much and causes wrinkles. I know some men shave. It might help to rub a bit of ordinary cooking oil eg olive oil or butter into facial skin to keep it lubricated because shaving and shaving creams etc are hard on the skin. Well groomed, clean silver, white or grey hair and beards look good on older gents, if you have the right face for a beard or character moustache and hair still. But, if bald, it is no drama. Men obsess over baldness, when most women don't even notice that a man they fancy is actually bald, until he points it out to them, by how he acts so self conscious about it and then the woman thinks "Oh, so he's got no hair there... But he might have some elsewhere, and probably more important characteristics than hair on his head...MUST check out what he does have that I'd like in a man......".But two things do matter to a man's facial appearance. His teeth need to look decent, even if false or heavily filled etc. And he needs to get rid of hair growing out of his snout and ears that give h animal characteristics. And overly thick bushy eyebrows can also look pretty scary, though eccentric but nicely groomed ones can give his face character when his face moves. Tasteful male jewellery can also enhance an older man's image to make him look like a rate, precious treasure, depending on the type of character he is.Some outdoorsy, adventurous older gents who enjoy hunting,fishing etc like to wear natural looking jewellery, made from animal bones etc. In right yscenarios eg a barbecue, with right clothes, these look good. Retired ex military types have a decorous look about them naturally and would look good in their medals, badges, a signet ring etc. Older ex businessmen, probably rich still, unless they blew it all on risky ventures must wear a good quality watch because, in business, time is money and, as one ages, the runs out, so this sends a clear message to wannabe lover women of such types that they need to hurry up, make up their minds and say yes or stop wasting such a man's precious time. It has psychological impact. The ageing creative male is flamboyant by nature, even in old age, if his irresponsible love of life even allows him to make it old age. He will look good in a bracelet, but no watch and probably many rings, on all fingers, except the traditional ring finger. It says "Take my hand. I need a strong steady loaded woman to guidee through my crazy, chaotic, confused life. I'll give you a good time. So long as you don't expect me to marry you and end up chained down to the "good family man" routine, because that just ain't me, babe.. I seek love and freedom, life, joy... Wanna take my hand?The one with the charms bracelet. I can charm you...You may not survive the next trip we take, but it will be great, before we go out with a bang..." I actually saw one of these types even pull out a very artistically embellished silver and diamentes encrusted cigarette case, featuring marijuana plants designs. Not quite sure what the cigarettes within it contained. I wasn't going to stick around to find out because I saw a cop car pull up outside the bar window....But, yeah, the guy did have his own unique style.Not suitable for most men, though...Just good fun to look at. Not the sort of image one could take as being a serious, stable, down to earth, responsible, dependable, upright etc man... d

Annemarie May respectfully I disagree with that premise. Diet is 90% of what you should focus on. I have heard the saying you can’t outrun a bad diet. Even if you can only walk for exercise as long as you eat healthy you can get fit.

I agree with most advices about shoes, chinos, jeans, polo shirts, and shirts. But it's not because you are older (I am in my early 50's) that you want to dress like an old man. One of my favorite brand is American Eagle, a brand supposed to be for teenagers and young adults. But I like their chinos, jeans, T- Shirts, polo shirts, shorts, and some shirts. I will not buy their graphic Tees but I will rather choose solid colors. Very classic brands are nice too, but sometimes boring. I am not old enough to wear only very traditional clothing from Brooks Brothers (a very good brand that I like, but sometimes it's too classic). I also love trendy clothing (or rock style) from brands such as John Varvatos. When you get older, many people say that you should wear mostly classic stuff, but you don't want to look old. About jeans and chinos, I like when it's slim fit, not baggy. You look older when there is too much fabric (same for shirts).

@@sitbone3 I care, because the comments are about a brand, targetted at an age group that would fit the profile of many viewers, not all US citizens. It's detailed comments like this that are extremely useful to global viewers, who want to buy Online, but often have to believe that the waffle on website advertising is factual. Because most of it is just created by an Advertising Agency, who are more interested in layout than factual information. So why knock this, just because you are familiar with the US brand names. It's attitudes like yours that is the reason China has replaced local manufacturing and local jobs in America. Phil.

I was about 36 approaching 37 when I evaluated my dress sense, I didn't really change my dress style and behaviour since my uni days: sneakers, baggy jeans/Cargo Trousers, Band T-Shirts or the ones with overly large logos or patterns, I simply never gave it any thought and I remember getting on a underground train in London and sat opposite two guys talking to each other, both a little older than myself, early 40's, one dressed like me, I spotted that he had the same footwear as myself and how funny I thought it looked on a older guy, then it hit me.. I'm probably in the same age bracket and If I'm laughing at him, are others laughing at me? The other guy looked sharp (Nice brown derby shoes, perfectly fitted dark jeans, tucked in shirt, a greeny grey Tweed sports jacket, a very nice looking watch, just really well groomed and put together, his clothes just looked age perfect) The guy who dressed like me looked like shyt, in fact dressing younger made him look older... As did I and it really put me in a downer for the whole day, I felt ultra conscious of being a older guy, wearing Nike Airmax sneakers with the red tick and a Coldplay T-Shirt from 1997, it was the first time that I felt embarrassed for what I was wearing. The next day, I tried emulating the look of the well dressed guy with what I had to hand (Brown chukka Boots, better fitting jeans, Some shirts and a blue blazer from a old suit I had, Swapped the G-Shock for a dressier Tag Heuer ) got a hair cut, trimmed the beard and the next day at work, I got nothing but compliments from everyone who knew me and some from people I didn't know. It was uplifting.

I’m 56 and my choice of clothing on a given day usually depends on what I’m doing that day. My personal preferences: I try to dress comfortable without looking like a slob. I almost always wear socks,. I avoid pastels and Disney (neon) colors. I like the way sweaters look but I don’t wear them very often because they are confining and get too warm inside. I stay in shape. I don’t follow fashion trends because they come and go. I set my own trends.

Quality clothes, cleaned an pressed usually serve the trick. A clean white pressed shirt, clean pressed jeans, and decent shoes, or creased slacks and polo are usually enough for most of us. A casual sports jacket tops it off, and you're good to go to almost anything.

Over my career I routinely see young (and older men) wearing baggy dress shirts and slacks that they probably got at Kohl’s or Target thinking that it will suffice. I call them “Verizon salesmen” (from the 90s and 00s). And many times the shirt colors are god awful pastels with mix match ties and black slacks. Then there are the scuffed “dress shoes” that don’t get any up keep and attention. Keep up the great work, John!

John,at the age of 82 I am outside of the demographic you nominated during the intro, but I got bored with retirement. So I dress to seamlessly blend in with the age group your channel targets. The benefit is that I am no longer viewed as the O.G. in the suit. So while I am not going to mirror your style of dress, because I don't think that it flatters my broad build, that's only a detail that concerns physique, not age. So your opinions force me to open up my mind. It works because my age is no longer a discussion point with strangers, but my clothes are. Thanks, Phil.

The problem with the influencer culture is that some guys think they know it all and can ridicule everything they personally don't like, or don't get to sponsor. But that is only if you let them. And also they make "style" much more important than it is. Remember, it's a subjective thing. You only need a few tips and you can forget about all the other drama. If you integrate a perfect fit, neutral colors and a modest but on paar set of accessories - you're already there. No need to buy every combo of clothes you see on yt or on pinterest. Have you ever noticed how some guys can look cool in clothes you never would or could wear? It's all about you attitude and conviction and self esteem. When you have that settled, you will be picking the perfect outfits for you. Similarly it was the case with the pickup community in the 90's. They would get all tactical and clinical, executing perfect approaches and trying to make picking up girls a tactical project. Then a guy came along who knew nothing about that crap and was killing it. So after many years they coined a term "inner game". What i'm trying to say, it should be fun and natural and an expression of YOU. Don't let anyone persuade you otherwise.😄😄😄

Great topic, well done! Yeah, our demographic definitely neglected. My own strategy in this matter has evolved gradually to include: Always wear a shirt with a collar, even in the house. No solo t-shirts except for gym, garage, or housework. The wife wholly agrees with this one. Jeans must fit well. No more baggy or ill fitting jeans. No more sneakers except for (as you indicated) the gym or exercise like a walk. Keep colours conservative, keep styles classy, even when uber casual. Of course, be mindful of what you wear and how old you are. Make sure everything fits. And when in doubt, tune into Forty over fashion! 😁

Excellent topic John! I will dare say that if the man is in top notch physical condition he may be able to get away with the more youthful looks, but if you are the average not too thin not too fat you do need to pay attention. Tommy Bahama is a nice brand and I do like some of their shirts although since I live in Miami the weather year round lends itself for that brand as is Island Wear. I think I have mentioned to you in a previous video that MACYS ALFANI brand is perfect for the older men while INC is targeted towards the younger men.

Hello John, I appreciate all of your helpful videos. One that I've not seen though has to do with the storage of wool clothing. Would you please be so kind as to offer tips on how to store wool suits when not worn in the summer? I've visited four different sites that give different instructions that seem to contradict each other. My State climate is home to LOTS OF MOTHS. Obviously, repairing a moth eaten suit can be expensive. Please share your wisdom, Sir. I thank you!
@phillipmoodie9071
@phillipmoodie9071 4 жыл бұрын
@Robert Caperma. I would appreciate the same advice. The problem with the moths in Melbourne Australia is that they have really expensive tastes and will ignore most standard 100s grade Men's Suit clothing, but love the fine and expensive 140s grade, as well as any high quality, but thin weave merino wool clothing. I tried putting protecting covers on the suits, but the moths crawled into the suit via the small opening at the neck of the cover. While everyone tells me that mothballs, sold by Department Stores will work, that didn't bother my super tough moths, while I hate the smell from the wardrobe. Phil.

That is important to get right. Grey hair in matching grey clothes? No! Sallow olive complexion in olive green or mustard yellow? Forget it. Black men in black suits? No way!And red haired men dressed in pra he look like an imminent fire disaster about to happen any moments, run to safety as fast as you can, ladies...Hot to get colour right eg clear pure colours, like bright blues etc on sallow complexions, light and bright on black people, just cool it with blues, aquas or neutral tones if red haired, though black and greens also look good on red heads. Very blonde guys can wear almost any colour, though I'd avoid canary yellow, unless you can sing like a canary and want to imitate one. With blondes, there are many different sorts of blondes eg golded or ashen to E, darker or clear and light or :"dirty blonde".Eye colour will give clues to best shades for you. Bron eye bonded may be very fair but have a golden, more earthy character, can wear browns, khakis, morrocco full eggplant purple shades(but not royal purples). They are often European blondes. Scandinavian blondes have a clarity and brightness about them and look good in sparkling bright blues etc. If you are ashen toned, stick to cooler to es. If you are more Holden blonde, stick to warmer shades, like terracotta or brick reds. The dirty blondes often look good in very unusual artsy type colour combinations, with a mixture of bright colour anduted colours, mainly in warmer tones, as they are unlikely to be ever ashen and lean more to golden shades or light brown, sandy colour hair and often have a somewhat sallow skin tone. If you are a very pale blonde, black or dark navy or colours like burgundy are just a bit too hard and dark. OK for work or army uniforms etc, but nowhere else really. Too stark a contrast. But a spruce or forest green can be OK on many blondes, but maybe not too good on the darker, dirty blonde shades.There are also variations among the back and brown haired as well as Auburn haired people, but not as many. You will either be darker or lighter, fuller or brighter, cooler or warmer black, brown , red etc. Cool red heads are rare and likely to be only Europeans, often with very deep purple/cobalt blue eyes, unlike the more common green eyed, warm gingery Anglo type red heads often seen in Australia. Blackheads can have a reddish, deep cherry glow or be more blue black or charcoal dull black. Brunettes come in all shades of light or dark browns but an portant consideration in correct colour choice is if you are a golden brown or a more dull ashen brown, the colour of steel or aluminium. The latter should stick to cool blues etc. The former can wear warmer shades eg beiges, lighter browns etc. One way to figure out best colours for you is to get a colour paints chart from a house paints hardware type store, cut out colours you think might work and hold them against you in a mirror. Look at your eye colours. If you choose shirts and ties to mirror these and colour of your hair, you usually get it right. But, remember, we change as we age, get paler. So, just because it looked so hot on you as a younger man doesn't mean it will look so crash hot now. But you can still wear your preferred colours and feel happy in them. The trick is to just wear them a few shades lighter and soften the look eg not wild sharp contrasts of light and dark, very bright colours, which age you. You can have a bit of "bright and wild" colour, if you think you are still bright and wild as ever. But, unless you want to look comical, I'd keep it to a minimum eg a wild bright, not too big tie or cravatte etc with a plain all over darker, grabber colour can look interesting and give theessage that you are still alive and on for a bit of life, passion, excitement or whatever, with anybody willing to take a chance on you... The worst thing on older men, to me, is old men in those dorky cardigans some like to wear, you know, complete with pocketswith little flaps and buttons, in colours like bright red, to complete it all. You see them stroll into bars, ancient "I've been to Bali" type plastic traveller bag in hand, some freebie from the escorted "adventure tour" travel agents, many decades ago. In their Aussie style bucket beach hats, covered in all these sly barbed of all the obscure Aussie outback one horse towns they spend a night sleeping rough in because they ran out of dough and the women running the local whorehouse wouldn't give them a free bed and meal with no cash up front..."Oi, what d'ya think this is, Mate?!? Bloody bush week or something? Get in the dog house and just shut up and do as yet told... Go cut the grass, chop some wood, catch some fish... Bloody useless good for nothing lay about bastards... .. Sick to death of men? Thinking they can just drop in here from nowhere, no dough, no means..."

I am a jeans and t kind of guy. That said the one rule I follow is if I think I need to dress it up (a little or a lot), then I dress it up. Each situation is different. Running errands on a Saturday morning is not the same as going to a friends BBQ on Saturday afternoon, and the BBQ is not the same as a Saturday night dinner party. Know the situation and dress accordingly - it's really that simple.

Like the channel a lot - the only point I consistently disagree with is his fondness for what he referred to as hole pattern type shoes. In my father's day that similar style was called wingtips. I don't find them particularly stylish nor temporary looking. I feel there are much better choices for a casual dress shoe with jeans than that - like the same type shoe without the pattern. But that's my opinion.
