Hi magnet, what are you doing with that subwoofer?
@alanchatfield55334 жыл бұрын
For break in when sitting on magnet you should build a piece of 18 mm mdf to sit under magnet with a hole in middle and an exhaust gap to outside of wood for air flow from pole vent. Will help with stopping a pressure build up behind dust cap and give more accurate T/S

EMF Audio, just a word of advice. A dremel tool ( Worx makes a very small profile rotary tool that is Corded and plugs into a battery pack) with a metal cutting wheel is ideal for cutting off your voice coil from the inside. You can get a straight and perfect cut and if it is a little uneven you can grind it from the top to smooth it off. Just wanted to bring that up incase you hadn't thought of something like that. Thank you for the awesome videos!

Would love to hear how you go about calculating for perticual t/s parameters like if you did want this sub to have a lower fs or a different qts?
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
Without having known specifics on an individual part and the software to simulate it, you have to go off of experience. Lower Fs will come with a different Qts, and that can be done by using a looser suspension or adding mass.

That's an extremely impressive subwoofer especially for a 10 would be awesome in a bass tube like a 15 inch tube with a plate adapter for the 10 inch face and at 45hrz and up that would definitely do killer at SPL comps as most SPL competitions the Winning frequency is at 35 hrz and up to 60 hrz👍 great job on the build

@helvetinooppeli4 жыл бұрын
I also watched the build video and i wondered what subwoofer parts are the ones that defines fs. Is it so that stiffer spiders makes higher fs? It looked like you put one multilayer spider that had different colored spiders and so far all the subs i have seen had 1 to 4 similiar spirers. I`m going to make 10" subwoofer and trying to play some low notes with it. I probably use ti basket, 300oz motor ja 3" flat aluminium voicecoil so what kind of spirers and how many of them i should use?
@EMFAudio4 жыл бұрын
The stiffness of the spiders and surround combined with the moving mass is what determines the Fs. The colors of the spiders mean nothing, they're all the same spider, colors used for identification. The weight of the motor doesn't matter, that basket is limited to 1 diameter of spider but the number of spiders also means nothing. Not every spider is the same stiffness and more doesn't mean better. To play lows you'll want a lower Fs, not a super stiff suspension.

Help me understand something: The SD of this woofer is listed as 63.617, whereas my AB xd1244 only measures out to 51.071. The reason I ask is because I'm building a mass-loaded T-line based off the listed T/S parameters for the sub as posted, and I want to make sure I'm not under-building an enclosure for it. Is the decrease in SD caused by a lack of xMax compared to this sub, or is it because the FS for that 10 is higher? Not using any computer program to do this, as Hornresp doesn't compute correctly below FS or F3 without loading the horn, and I plan on it being unloaded and tuned to 24hz, even though FS is listed as 35hz on the datasheet. Am I barking up the wrong Birch box here?
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
First things first, the sub in this video is considered a 10" which is really an 11" and you're comparing it to a 12" from a catalog pushing company that doesn't engineer or test anything. The Sd figure you're going off of appears to be for a 10" model. You're basing a design off of incorrect information. Even if it were the right size, I believe all their specs are out of the box, not broken in, so they'd be wrong anyway. Sd is the effective cone area, it has nothing to do with Xmax or Fs.

So it definitely is a little inconsistent, but it gets the job done. I have built a couple subs and was curious, so I bought it. For $100 I figured it wouldn't be a horrible investment if I plan on building more. Was also curious how far off of spec some of the stuff I owned was. And have checked some cheaper subs with no listed parameters for a friend. For high volume manufacturing I would probably want something better, but for a quick measurement I feel it works well.

Could that be due to a slight misalignment of the voice coil in the motor?
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
It's due to sitting on foam and the entire speaker moving. That much motion wouldn't be possible from a misalignment, you can't physically see a misalignment. Misaligned or not, the forward and rearward motion is the same, the weight balance isn't any different.
@xenaguy015 жыл бұрын
@@EMFAudio Foam, gotcha. My question was because, if the voice coil was off-center, the momentum would be concentrated on one side, and cause that -rocking motion- vibration. (shows up as rocking at super slo-mo)

@@xenaguy01 Right, but the alignment has nothing to do with not being centered because that would mean the mass of the cone would be different on one side. The mass it the same around the entire cone. Because the mass is the same, the center of mass is in the middle, AKA centered.

@pmcalis11115 жыл бұрын
BaSsAholiC he did but that video was showing that not playing the sub to its upper mechanical limits would unevenly break in the suspension...the “breaking in” myth is that the sub needs to be played on very low power for an an extended time...to pull parameters for a sub it needs to be played and have the suspension loosened because parameters change once suspension changes.
@hispls5 жыл бұрын
Like the other guy said, TS parameters should shift 20% or so within the first few minutes of heavy excursion. They'll continue to shift pretty much forever after that but not by much. I have two questions! 1. What happens if the sub will make some mechanical noises? Will you recone it again and lose that money? 2. Why is that sensivity so low, I mean PA subwoofers are 4 or 5 times louder on the same wattage, what are the differences?
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
1. If there are mechanical noises it will get rebuilt at our cost. We do our best to ensure that isn't a problem during assembly and it's rare it happens. 2. That isn't exactly correct. PA subwoofers have a higher sensitivity rating, that doesn't make them louder. PA drivers are terrible at playing lows as well, the design method is totally different. In this case, this sub would play more like a PA driver but there isn't a PA 10" that will take the power this sub will. PA drivers also require a gigantic enclosure, this sub does not.
@oprisvlad31025 жыл бұрын
@@EMFAudio Thank you for the answer! I am not sure if this sub can go louder than a PA sub, esecially in long-range. I mean the custom sub is designed to throw bass 2 or 3 meters away you in a car, what about 50 meters outside? It is much more easier for a sub to play in the environment it was designed and that's why we cannnot really compare them. I am sorry if my second question was not understood but i asked only about the sensitivity. Have a good day!
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
@@oprisvlad3102 Sound projection has to do with wavelength and enclosure. If you take a PA sub and a car sub and you put them both outside and meter them from 100 ft away, the car sub isn't going to be silent because it's far away.

Narrow and high surround foam or rubber is not the best. I think of side movements stability. have 1 spider is also not the best. I think of the mechanical stability when loading the loudspeaker with a lot of watts. Take some of the powerful PA speakers. They have 2 spiders. It is nice to have a powerful coil that can withstand 800watt but then the mechanical must withstand it.
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
There is more to it than shape, material matters too. This particular surround is very stable. When you say 1 spider, do you mean a single spider or a single pack compared to spaced spiders? This particular sub has 6 spiders but it's all 1 pack. Another factor among all this is coil mass, distance from spider to the bottom of the coil, and cone depth.

Why would sensitivity, not matter? I always heard that, the higher the sensitivity number the louder the speaker will play with less amplifier power. Also if you match the sensitivity of all your drivers, your entire system will play more nicely together. Meaning, you can run amp gains lower, and everything will peak around the same power usage without having to drive one amp harder than another. Is this correct, or have I been bullshitted for the last 20 years? 🤔
@EMFAudio4 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH_CopqAoNqgaJI You should watch that. As far as setting gains lower based on sensitivity, that's just ignorant. The gain is for matching the input of the amp to the voltage on the signal input. That's it. You'll likely never match the sensitivity of each speaker either. There isn't a need to do that anyway because you can adjust volume levels of each speaker to balance it out regardless. In short, you have been bullshitted in the worst way for the last 20 years.

I've never broke in any of my subs. Just strait to music.

I always just hook it up and play my normal music at 50/60% volume for a few days before I crank it up! 🔊🔊 never had a problem

the debate of wether or not to break in subs will never cease to exist as long a traditional subs are a thing haha. Personally, the closest thing I own to a subwoofer is a Ampeg ba 115v2 bass combo amp if that counts. 150 watts at 4 ohms (I think) running through a 15 inch woofer and a tweeter. shit is loud af for my standards. I just gotta find a way to hook it up to a battery and toss it in a car, it already has the amplifier built in. But yeah I'll stop rambling.

Maybe you should build a little test bench to out it on that lifts it up from the table so it can vent out the back😋
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
It really isn't necessary for the purpose to have the vents open.

@Keith DeMons No.. Making a little testbench / frame to put the sub on. Not drilling a hole in the bench he got
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
@Keith DeMons There is no reason for a hole, or a mount or frame or anything. If there was, I would have already done it. That bench is 4 years old and never had a need for it.

This is why you invert mount the woofer. Have you ever seen inverted subwoofers before?

Holy S#!t how the hell do you mount a speaker with a motor that is bigger than the surrounding?

That would make it a different size, and that isn't the size he needed.
