Quick recap of my latest community post : I've just noticed we now got to 8000 subscribers. 8000 ! That’s an honestly insane number. Sure, probably 7000 are already dead waiting for videos, (ok good got the meme out of the way 😂) but that still leaves 1000 alive and kicking ! Also the channel is just above 3 years old now. Mind blowing. In all seriousness, thank you SO much. The main philosophy of this third year will be to JUST HAVE FUN. LESS obsessing over the details, the formats, the algos, MORE of a just-do-it-and-post-attitude, and my usual shenanigans. Don't follow me on instagram @urgetorideig

Correcting your video, the first Yamaha Homologation Special was not the OWO1, it was the 1987 Yamaha FZR750RT. I have one of the 500 built. Very, very rare motorcycle. The RU of 1988 was more or less the same, then 1989 was the release of the infamous OWO1. You are correct on the OWO2 being the last of its linage. I had a friend in California whom had an R7 new. He died on it a couple years later when a car pulled out on him. I am not sure if his memorial survived the fires but his wheel was cemented into the ground off Stunt Rd, where Andy passed away in 2003. That was a special bike, CA road legal R7.

One of these was at a local dealer back then, absolutely a gorgeous bike. But you not only had to have the cash, you could not buy the bike without a race license. I also cringed when Yamaha introduced the new "R7" because I remember what it really was. Then there were the "R7/1" bikes some folks (like David Jeffries) ran at the IOM in '99, an R1 motor in an R7 frame!

1000cc V twins were allowed to race in Superbike because the AMA wanted Harley Davidson to join in and bring in their rabid fans with them. Unfortunately Harley didn’t join in quickly. Ducati looked at the weight and displacement advantages that were offered to the twins and said,hey,we can build a competitive bike and they did. Real do Ferracci was the US importer and hired Doug Polen as his rider. Ducati built a great bike and with Ferracci’s tuning they were actually making lots of power. So much that Doug was sand bagging at the start of the race,short shifting until halfway through the race then revving the engine,passing riders easily. Ferracci was the first one to put a camera on the tank. It was through the video you could see Doug was shifting at a lower RPM. He always seemed to get a poor start and them work his way up through the field. He put on a good show. Unfortunately when Harley did build a Superbike it was down on power and unreliable,plus they never made a street bike to sell to the public. They were able to get away with it because the bike was a turd and couldn’t win no matter who Harley hired o ride it.

The customer buying the new R7 would be too young to even know about the old R7 and probably knows nothing about the history of it or even cares, that's probably why Yamaha have not pushed the fact in their advertising. And yes, the anniversary paint scheme is awesome and totally suits the bike. It's a little gem.

The word over the years is that if you went to Yamaha asking for that particular bike they would pretend not to know what you were talking about and if came up to recalcitrant about the subject they would try to make you believe that what you meant was YZF 750. The R7 was designed by Yamaha's racing department and is probably the most beautiful bike they have made so far.

Don't lose sight of the fact that "Super twins" are the up and coming series for Younger riders as the 600s slowly die away .Ardy ,the R7 is getting the upper hand in USA twins racing as the Italian bikes are a little "fragile". In the Uk ,whilst the Kawasaki er 650 has been a leader ,the R7 is now becoming a threat and will certainly continue to do so now that Super twins are allowed to run 700cc .

One of the best channels! Awesome fun content. Personally I never knew what the R7 was so the naming scheme never bothered me. At the end of the day it's just a name and the new product is fresh and high quality. I do wish Yamaha did something a little special with it beyond the MT07. Maybe a hotter crank shaft that requires a bit more revs and maybe a 10hp power bump. I think the collective crowd would give that 2 thumbs way up.
@UrgetoRide2 жыл бұрын
Me too but I think they didnt touch the engine so it doesnt ramp up insurance cost(they're aimed at young people who already get destroyed by insurance) and to not make it too expensive. It isn’t supposed to be a replacement for the R6. It isn’t supposed to be an updated version of the OW 02 R7. It’s supposed to be a reliable commuter friendly middleweight sports bike. Yamaha could have made a much more powerful bike if they wanted to, but they didn’t. It has nothing to do with the old R7 or the R6. Yes, it would be nice to have a new inline 4 middleweight from Yamaha making more than just 74bhp, but screaming 600’s are a dying breed and there’s a massive market for bikes just like these. Don’t know why people don’t get that.

Yamaha made its first homolgation bike, the FZR750R in 1987 and Yamaha's first ever WSBK win came a year later with this bike at Sugo in Japan, ridden by... Mick Doohan! I think only 200 or so came to the US but it never succeeded much in racing (a contingency program like Suzuki had might have have helped). A couple of years later I was racing at Grattan raceway in Michigan when I came across a flyer from a nearby Yamaha dealership offering one (new) for sale. For under 6 thousand dollars (because it was regarded as a failure). OK, six grand was a lot more money then than it is now but it was still pretty affordable and I was sorely tempted to buy it. I didn't and have always regretted it.
