I now have 3 s14 and im 17. still stock ka. my friend has a e36 with a ford 351 windsor making 600hp na. i don't care about performance as much as i do the ascetics. they are drift cars but i like them to look good when im going sidewaz. also i only go through two tires in one day which is pretty nice. my friend goes through two in two runs.

I get your point but i don't agree. 240s are an awesome platform, weight nothing, tons of aftermarket parts, tons of different swaps you can do and it's well built, 240s have a fantastic chassis. I mean, if you''re able to work on your car, you can get a CLEAN chassis for a 1000$ and to me, 240s looks way better than a 350z. Even here in italy where less than 1500 200sx s13 were sold (hatch only, we don't have the silvia) you can get yourself an s13 for not that much. I've got a clean chassis for 1200 Euros and the average s13 is sold for 7-8k Euros! I mean, yes, the drift tax exist, but i'm more than happy to see that people understand how valuable this platform is. Yes 350z is a great platform, but not as good to me :D Oh here we have the CA18DET, so even from the factory we have a great engine capable of alot of horses, good torque and great reliability.

Very true. This is a neccesary evil of modern safety regulations unfortunately. The 350z is a lot more rigit than the 240 however and, in addition, makes much more power so in my opinion it makes up for it. The other big thing is the 350z has a lot of aftermarket support, like the 240, which I think plays a big role.

I mention chris forsberg's pro exp with a vq becuase its someone everyone knows and can relate to and trust opinion...... I own a shop I worked for shops, the vq is a piece of shit until the hr motors. Facts. Ask anyone. The pre 06 trans shit at 300whp in 2nd and 3rd synchos... a ka trans lasts longer..... cd009... hr.. yea they are good... but running thru tons of for sale ads to pick a 240 posted back in 2013.... then findhing the shittiest 350z model for good price isn't to comparable. Also ask anyone beside new drift kids who just watch ebisu trips on youtube, jzx aint doing shit in pros. It's won 2 events in its 30 year life. Besides ebisu, drifting in japan is declining, ask anyone who actually goes. And yes I have been its fun. You should go. If ANY car is the new 240, it's a e46. shells/ none running for 1k and can be jz, turboed, or ls'd for the same cost as any other car.

I understand why a 350z is a better option, you're right on most of the thing, although there is one category of people that a 350z wont fit, BUT more than 90% of the 240sx/silvia out there wont either... Those silvia had a particular look and if you are in to build and maintain your 240sx as a sunday drive's car/show car, the Z looks nothing like it... Also the Z is heavier, like, alot... so I would pay the extra money to get a clean Silvia S15 straight from japan over a 350Z... again, it's a great car, but from someone who just love the Silvias (s15 in particular) a 350z wont replace it

You're right the 240 has sort of exploded out of control, but the 350 may not be the answer. Out of the box it is pretty sweet, but adding power can be tricky because those engine bays are kinda small and have a big engine already stuffed into them. There isn't a lot of room to grow with 350s. There's plenty of LS potential with them, but that's a whole different discussion. The next 240 is the BRZ/FR-S. They are going to get cheap and they are simple with massive growth potential.

i bought mine for $1800, it had a blown engine. none of the brakes were working, it had toyota supra tail lights molded into the rear end, its suspension was blown, it was one of the few thats in my area that has a clean title, i spent about $17000 just in rebuilding it, and i'm still not done. its not worth almost 20k in just rebuilding a car that breaks a lot and has an engine that cant handle that much power. its not worth getting a 240sx unless you have a very good job that pays good money. if you want to learn how to drift, get a 350z, they are way more reliable, that can handle a ton of power, the body isn't fragile like the 240sx. plus so many people are buying 240's thinking it's gonna be the perfect drift car, and then they end up crashing and or thrashing it and it turning into a salvage title, trying to find a clean title 240 is nearly impossible for a cheap price. and don't be a fucking dumbass and buy a 240 thats skyrocketing in price and is getting insanely rare just to find one that's not a salvage title. If you're smart you would buy a 350z, a car that's affordable, fast, durable, isn't rare, and has about the same aftermarket support as a 240sx does.

My favourite car is the s15 spec R which you could argue is a 240 and I feel that you are missing the point of why old silvias are amazing to drive. It doesn't matter how fast it is, it doesn't matter how old it is, it doesn't matter if it is unreliable. The reason people love 240s is because of the soul, the personality, the way it makes you feel. I love some new cars but in reality none of them give me the same feeling as any of the old silvias.

As a G35 owner for over 10 years, after I came from an sr20 swap s14 back in 2005, I can completely agree. I sold my 240sx when the prices sky rocketed (mainy because of tokyo drift) and used that money as a down payment for my G35. Best decision I made. The problem is how expensive it is to build a VQ35de/hr motor. cams cost me 1400 w/ springs and even with a good deal, it cost me about 6k to build the bottom end. If you wanna be stock and do some bolton's you're good for about 280whp-290whp is you get the right mods.

The 350z is an absolute bear to work on. Turbo kits are far to expensive for them. Supercharging.....meh no thanks. The vq35 is far from bullet proof let alone if you don't have a cd009 from the factory. Yes they make more power from the factory but they aren't light and nimble like the s chassis. Granted some people do ask a pretty penny for their cars but there are also some that are still very well priced. The only bonus in buying a 350z is that they are a newer car and have a nicer interior, just a lot of lack luster with those vehicles.

As a 240 owner, they break, then it breaks again, then you repair something else, then you have to fix another thing, may have to do with the way you drive it lol, but the chassis are all 20 years old, they're not worth anything, its a 20 year old 4 cylinder Nissan, the value is all in the owner. Very fun to drive. The only problems I've had were one injector, 3rd gear synchro a little warn and a oil leaks. Perfect car for her. Doesn't like to do over 80 but looks like it will do 140. What more could a parent of a teen driver want. We took it on a 4000 mile road trip last year. Still an awesome car. They are way overpriced on the Internet.

He's right that the 240 is way overpriced now, but that's probably because of the fact that stock 240s are becoming rarer and rarer, and, outside of the stock world, the people who buy them to mod into a drift/track car are trying to salvage the money they sunk into the car.

I owned a 1990 240SX for about 10 years. Bought it from a small used car lot......almost everyone else buys them from private owners. I'd say I paid a little more for it compared to Craigslist but everything worked and the car was sound and solid......and very very stock. Despite it being an SE model, it didn't have alloy wheels, front lip or rear spoiler. I owned mine before the whole drift craze here in the states went crazy with them. Over the 10 years I've owned it, all I'd done were some handling mods (springs, shocks, strut bars, sway bars, tires, brakes, etc.) and a few power-freeing upgrades. It was my daily but I only abused it at autocross events. What I enjoyed about autocross is it's mainly about handling instead of power. Despite having the SOHC engine, I'd beaten other 240's with twin cams, SR swaps and LS V8 swaps at autocross events. Reason being is they produced more power but they couldn't use it fully on such a short and tight course layout whereas my 240 mainly had handling mods so I can keep my speed up better than they could. In short, I had one of the fastest SOHC 240's in the NorCal area at autocross events. Elsewhere, yeah I'd be beat easily. My main rival was my brother who drove and still drives a AE86 coupe with nothing but handling mods. My goal was to always get within a second of his time. It was hard but I pulled it off several times. This was the only 240SX I've ever owned and probably the last. I guess I had the luck of the draw not needing to buy 2 or 3 more 240's just to own a 240. I've had friends who'd gone through at most 5 240's in 3 years. I'm like "WTF are you doing? I'm still on my first one." Anyway, the only issues I had with the car was the MAF sensor connector. I would wiggle out of place I guess but still be connected and cause the CEL to turn on. So then I'd have to dive under the passenger foot well to reset the ECU all the time, so annoying. Funny thing is I decided to sell my 240 and ended up getting a car that came stock with a SR20 engine, a G20.....and that engine is pretty much the only good thing about that car. I don't really miss my 240 or miss owning one since I had one for a long time.

I've had 4 s-chassis's now including ca18det s13's, sr20det 14a's etc and agree with this guy, if I could do it over again I would get a 350z fit some decent coilovers, weld the diff and steering lock kit. Job done. Probably wouldn't break every outing too. I guess the s-chassis is just addicting though.

I'm with this guy. The biggest reason I wanted an S14 was for the backseat for my kids when they rode around in it, but the prices are ridiculous. If it's stock and manual, highest price. You also have tons of unfinished projects being sold for way more than it's worth. Definitely way better going with a Z, which in my state goes for about $4.5K running, and since I'm pushing about 300k miles on my maxima(VQ30DE) milage isn't a big worry with a Z.

3 years later, and this guy is 100% right. I had two VERY clean SR swapped 240s over the years that I sold for $6500-7000, and you definitely couldn't buy them for that now. I wouldn't mind a full Kouki/Koguchi/tf works gt-1 S13 but at that point I'd be ponying up $10-20k for the right one. Which would be absolutely insane, considering you can buy a C5 Z06 a C6 a 370z or so many other awesome cars that wouldn't be nearly as much of a headache for that price.

honestly being a owner myself I can honestly say he's not wrong. The 240sx is an amazing car and in my personal opinion a better chassis than a 350z, however they are basically all buckets. It is a fun car, but the instant you fix something something else will break in my case it is a car from 92 so I get it shit will break. It's a lifestyle and even though everything will break I won't be trading my 240 for a while. This is coming from a guy who had his face burned off by a over pressurized coolant system that blew off the cap (no I did not open it). So if you want a bucket from the 90's with EXTREME drift tax be prepared you'll be in for a ride or in some cases no ride, but I currently wouldn't give up my 240 for anything.

Sprint2911gt3rsr I agree I picked up my hatch for 1800 with an extra motor (which was needed since the original blow on the way home). The issue is that you used to be able to pick one up for around 1000 in perfect order and now you can only find decent shells for that much (granted you might find Craigslist gold). Sooner or later shells will be around the 2000 mark and at some point most of them will be completely wreaked or scrap metal jacking the price up even further. This is where the point of the video comes in we will have to move on someday it sucks but it's true. If only Nissan would just bring back the s-chassis or even better just remake the originals (complete fantasy but one could dream).

I would suggest a Toyota soarer twin turbo 1J. People are practically giving them away over here in Australia. I could have got one for $1600 the other day with 115,00km and fairly tidy. Only needed around 4 grand put into it and it would have been over 500hp with a single turbo conversion and brand new parts pretty much all round. It had a decent paint job, body kit, suspension, black leather and no electrical issues. It's a bloody shame I was flat broke at the time. But picked up a 1983 Mazda GTX 1.6 turbo 2wd that I'm going to restore/modify it from the ground up. Picked it up for a $1000 and I reckon 5 to 6 grand for the restoration (I'll do all the labour) over a few years. This car is so bloody rare that I would say there are less than 15 left in the entire country. Hope fully it's going to be worth an absolute fortune in years to come . Either way it's going to be fun bringing it back to life and driving the first hot hatch turbo that Mazda has ever made. 350s are too noisy being a mid ranged engine and have no character. There's nothing really special about them and they are usually driven by dickheads who can't purchase a turbo because of restricted licenses. 180s are fantastic cars but I would take an r32 gtst over them anyday of the week. 6cylinder over a 4 cylinder and they eat 180's for breakfast (stock or modded with equivalent to each other. Sr20s are over rated motors. Too unreliable and don't have enough punch of the line

I agree about the price. I live in Southern California. Trying to find a S14 under 4K is nearly impossible. People who are interested in purchasing a 240sx should do some research. 240's have SO MUCH aftermarket love. You can throw so many motors in this chassis. I personally will buy and own a S chassis even with the cost. When you buy a car you get it because you really like it. His opinion is going off of money. You can get more for less, but personally. An S chassis looks much better than a 350z.

You are right, about the fact that 240s at getting to costly. but i learned alot about proper technique from daily driving an S14. And to me that was worth it owning it. i think the 350z has to much power to start out for drifting or any new driver. (And when i say new driver i mean new to learning proper driving technique) i think that is a car you should work up to. Learning to drift and driving underpowered cars teaches you alot about fundamentals that is why, i have to go with the 240 as a starter car i still think you should buy one. Plus its an iconic car and every Motorhead should own one at one point in their life.

I bought my S14 12 years ago for $4k and have put on 120k miles (mostly daily driver in Michigan). But, since it's a Michigan car, rust is taking it's toll. I think it has more value to hold on to, than to sell. To comment on the video, I agree to a certain point. One thing i DO like about the 240 is the back seat. Not for the people (but I have had 4 or 5 people in it!), but for the dog and other stuff. There are VERY few "similar" cars with a backseat: TT, BRZ/FRS, and ...? When you don't care about the back seat, there are a lot more options. I've liked the 350z look and have only ridden in one once. It's a car I would consider if the price was right

S Chassis enables people to learn, work on their car with ease, swap almost any relevant motor, not to mention the variety on parts and aero. I agree that people are pricing their cars a little high, but to say that they aren't worth an investment or to say that get a VQ that you can't work on is better, is ridiculous. If you wanna drift, KA dual or single cam is literally the best thing ever to learn in...you don't need power to drift, you need skill.

I got my s14 for $1,500 and it has a rebuilt engine with only 500 miles, straight pipe exhaust, new coilovers, 255 fuel pump, and countless other mods and all it needed to be running was a new fuel filter, the clear coat is chipping a little but it's expected on a 20+ year old car but other than that it's bullet proof. Prices for 240's (at least in my area) are under 5k but I agree the 350z is getting a little cheaper and 240 prices are going up. As an investment standpoint 240's are better because of prices rising (if you get them cheap enough), 350's are going down until 10 more years or so when they hit that sweet spot of rising again. But both are amazing cars none the less.

you're right and you're right about the 240. But the early 350s burn oil religiously! Your first view of the 350 is the new model that still goes for over 10gs. It is the new 240 in probably 10 years, although you'll need to hop on it quick before it becomes another 240. 240's were dirt cvheap back in the 2003-2008 days...
