Lots of people (especially Blender beginners) struggle with creating visually appealing shapes, but it's actually incredibly simple using this simple approach.

Thought you were going to talk about design principals and rules of aesthetics. While it certainly helps to “polish” a basic blocky form, bevels and trims can only go so far. Good design is a lot more than “appealing” shapes. Depends on the style you are going for, blocky could be the more appropriate look sometimes too.

You've been selling us fog lately, Josh. I will now try to be brutally honest like Ponte, so I will write you the following: These tutorials fall into the classic clickbait category for obvious reasons. I understand that it's not simple to produce fresh content on a regular basis, and I'd say that some people don't even want to reveal it on purpose, but I personally respect you two because you have freely shared with us for years the tips and techniques that have practical applications. This is already the third or fourth video you've posted in a row that is almost not worth watching. I'm starting to get the impression that you want to avoid repeating yourself, or you don't have time to offer an example that's a little more meaningful and complex, or you've simply fallen into a trap where you have the impression that you've exhausted everything worth showing. Judging by these sub-d examples that Ponte has been working on lately, I'd say it is probably the first thing that I mentioned. Ponte's examples are solid and useful, and that's fine. It sounds like a logical continuation of the workflow you are practicing. However, as far as you are concerned, I have the impression that the sub-d modeling technique does not suit you as a lecturer, and it seems that you have a problem connecting with the examples that Ponte is working on. I don't know what your reason is, but I hope that you will change something for the better. Best regards. 🙂

I'm currently watching creators like Arijan, just yesterday he modelled, textured and animated an apple watch, which has real world shape problems and tricky parts. Pzthree "drops" really sophisticated design videos and so on for different blender creators. It seems that more the time pass more blocky and primitive Josh"s design becomes. The formula is "You suck + fancy (but empty and useless) video editing + a cube or a cylinder with some bevel or elementary extrusion.I'm sorry to say it but others are putting out much more valuable content recently. And what about the price of the courses? I've purchased myself the same products you are selling right now for 1/4 of the current price. It seems the only business model where the price of older products go up instead of down. 197 dollars for the new game asset course ? Chamferzone, a guy who has been working in the industry for 14 years, has a triple AAA weapon course for 40 bucks. It's your business and you can do whatever you want, but I'm perplexed watching creators that worked 10-15 years in the videogame industry putting out the same type of product (a finalized weapon) for 1/5 of the price. If you are selling a lot keep doing what you are doing, good for you, but I pass.

Was about to say. It would be nice to see some more tutorials that revolve around texturing our models. I really like the Materialworks plugin, but I'd like to more with it than just make stunning renders. It would be great if the bros made more videos regarding hard-surface texturing. It doesn't have to be in Blender, I'm okay with that. But it would be nice to spend more time with making game-ready textures with our mid-poly models. Maybe even how to make a sci-fi scene in Unreal. @Josh and Ryu, it's okay if content like this has gotten a little stale, it just means you have to switch gears. That's all. :)

Your videos and Blender expertise are amazing, however I notice that it's often about making things look cool and visually appealing. At least as far as good game 3D design is considered you will notice that when the design is good every design choice is driven by a purpose. There is no random bevel, everything has a reason, that is linked to some functionality. I think the goal is to know how to achieve specific results, but you have to know exactly what and why you are making each detail. Otherwise we are just left with something perhaps steam-punky/techy looking, and maybe that's enough sometimes.

It sounds like you're talking about modeling things that are more or less real-life objects or need to be deliberate in design and function. Sure, in that case, there may be some limitations on what is appropriate for the result. I don't think I've seen any videos from the Bros that talk about modeling anything real. Most of the videos convey being creative and artistic, but with some design and composition ideas/rules to consider. That is a completely different project scope and better suited for personal portfolios. To be fair, though, they add function to form all the time and do an excellent job overall.

It depends on your objectives, style, and concept art. Sometimes a world emphasizes the blockyness of things and simple shapes are needed. I would run a bevel modifier on the right piece, since that creates edge highlights in combination with correct lighting and bevel weights. Also you should observe your topology. If your client runs Blender (or only gets a render) it is fine and dandy, but if you export to software like DAZ3D it is not so fine. Some programs triangulate quads and engons leading to horible shading issues it the topology is not up to par. If you got a snakeoil solution for the latter problem don't hesitate to correct me.

It's gonna filter out the shit artists, good artists will use that to create iterations of shapes and choose the best out of them then remake/refine it in 3d. Shit artists will not gonna be able to explain the program exactly what to do and they will get stuck at the detailing cause they can't really explain what they want or have no visual library...

This is just drivel. These videos feel more and more like someone who has a half an idea for a video and just goes for it one afternoon, with endless talking but saying nothing. You’ve basically said “these are mistakes that are made and I’m going to show you how to fix them” then created two shapes that are completely different. How is this technique meant to be used in our work? If a brief asks for blocky shapes and you produce rounded shapes, that’s the end of future work from that client. Please end these off the cuff videos, you’ll lose viewers and followers and you have so much to offer
