Finally someone who understands how to aim . I do the same thing when I’m putting of course I look for a mark about 12 inches in front of my ball. Learn how to aim like that from Jack Nicklaus 20 years ago….it works.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Good information. I did get a smile when you tried to chunk the shot into the bunker and it worked out perfect on the green.

The one that gets me is how many players go for the high pitch or lob shot from 15-20 yards and pretty much always thin it or skull it…I go for the bump and run as long as I have fairly flat ground and don’t have to hit over anything…

Straight away I am guilty of number 1. I never fly the pin. I always aim for the front number confidently , especially in warm conditions as the ball travels further, but ill try to improve on this when I next play, thanks matt some great tips 👍

A big disadvantage aiming for the front of the green comes from this time of year. It's summer here and the ground is firm. The moment your ball hits the ground in front of the green you lose a lot of spin and that wonderful 9 iron you expected to stop pretty much dead now rolls through and off the green. Many years ago my dad told me something he did in a competition. He decided that he would club to the middle of the green each time. After he'd taken slope, wind etc. into account, whatever club he was left with, he added one more. He did this for the whole round and ended up shooting 67. My dad's handicap was 8. He was hauled in front of the handicap committee to explain and he told them what he'd done. He also said it was one of those days where every 6-12 foot putt went in. Because he was a life member, ex-captain, had been at the club 30 years and had also been steward of the club for a period of time, they accepted what he said and just cut his handicap by one. They also warned him and said if it happened again they'd put his handicap under a guillotine!

@@johnanthony6092 Thank you for your reply. A nice story about your father, he sounds like a very handy player indeed. Thank you for your advice, unfortunately I couldn't spin a ball if you paid me 🤣 i get spin out of bunkers but wedges and irons spin is non existent , so when I play the front number it tends to roll out given the firm conditions. I havent been playing very long , so increasing spin im guessing would be an increase in club head speed which is something I would work towards. My shots also tend to be mid flight , I also need to work on fighting my irons higher to land better. Taking all of this into consideration, the front numbers tend to roll on for me , but I aim willing to club up and attack the pin, I just hope I don't fly the green! (Depends what trouble is around the greens i guess)

@@John-ql4wo Believe me, you are putting a lot of spin on any golf ball you hit from the short grass or the tee. It may not be as much as a pro but it is spinning. With your irons, whatever number is on the club, that is roughly how many rpm your producing x 1000. A 5 iron generates about 5000 rpm and a wedge around 10,000 rpm when struck well. When the ball hits the green (which is usually softer ground) it digs in and the spin you have generated makes the ball check as it lands and it slows it a lot. If you are good at generating spin it will still be spinning after the bounce which will stop it or even spin it back a little. However, if you hit the hard ground in front of the green the ball won't sink down hardly at all, it won't check up, and will likely run through the green. So try pitching on the green to get some check on the ball. You may not spin backwards, it may not stop, but it will definitely slow down and stay on the green fairly close to where it pitched. Better to pitch on the green 20 feet short of the flag and have it run 20 feet past than pitch it 20 feet short of the green, get a big bounce and then have it run 20 feet over the back of the green. By hitting the green you'll have a 20 foot putt rather than a 20 yard chip if you run through.

I hear this so much and yet I find more often then not if try to aim for back of the green I am more likely to get into more trouble then if aim for middle or front depending on what is in front of the green.

@@karlmilne6446The vast majority of golfers never go over the green even when aiming for the back of it. People underclub rather than overclub.

Great tip about using the number for the back of the green except for my 9 hole course where OOB is directly behind the green on 7 holes and a pond awaits anything over the green on the 4th 😢

Yeah, there definitely are courses where the majority of the trouble is in the back. My former home course was front friendly on almost every hole. The courses with false fronts can really mess you up unless you make the adjustments as Matt suggests. As a guideline though, playing to the back yardage is good advice for most amateurs.

I find people that club up tend to hit it easier from not quite believing the intended end result……. Cover the ball ….. hit it lower and because of the deloft they hit it further(and probably better lol) and fly the green…… then club down on the next shot but hit it harder shooting and spinning it more leaving them short Then with the aiming …… they(and myself) spend more time than usual aligning themselves up…… but because of the delay…… suede up and misfit the ball as they’re not focusing on the swing Guess maybe a video on how to mentally deal with the change in adapting these lessons without the foibles happen would be a great follow up lesson…… following these lessons Love the content mate…… can’t wait to see your unrivalled enthusiasm you have when you travel and play courses Like a child clutching his to like at Christmas unwrapping his new bmx😂😂😂😂

I think we're all guilty of underclubbing. Think about how many times a round you land it short of the green Vs how many you overshoot the green. My ratio is maybe 10 to 1.

It all depends on the course you are playing the one I usually play I actually find it is much better to end short then go long therefore I decide which is safer to end up short or a little long.

I don't know why you youtube guys are always delivering this "take more club"? So many greens are sloping steep from back to front and there are usually just a couple of meters of grass behind the green and then it is really really bad. I would want to go short of those flags, or have a short chip uphill, all day long
