Perfect example of why the horses should be off limits to the public. You can get a great picture without any contact with the horse at all and it still be a good a good experience all around. The horse is an extension of the soldier, a weapon if necessary, and very much an individual soldier in his own right, and shouldn’t be treated like a petting zoo attraction. You wouldn’t expect to go up to any armed police with a police dog and put your hands all over them, their weapons, or pet the police dog like it was a pet, the guards and their horses are no different. Allowing the public to handle the horses sends confusing messages about their purpose and the purpose of the whole facility, people think it’s a tourist attraction there for their pleasure when in reality it’s a fully functional military facility. Stricter rules regarding the horses would go a long way in reducing the confusion, stress and unnecessary confrontations that happen way too frequently. Not to mention the frustration the horses must feel from people constantly shoving their hands in their faces and mouths, that’s a lot of constraint to ask of the horses however well trained they are. But I’m not in charge so on it’ll go.🤷🏻‍♀️😿

My father was in the artillery during WW2. He was one of several soldiers responsible for a number of horses, most of which were well behaved, however one horse was known to be difficult and needed to be treated with more than a little respect. When lined up for inspection one morning the man in charge of this particular horse who was known to be less than gentle with this animal , in a careless moment had three fingers bitten off by the vengeful horse. A lesson learned by the other soldiers.

When you put your hand close to a mouth of an animal and don’t expect them to bite you… I’m glad she did not make a fuss because she knew that she was in the wrong. What do they expect, they go right up to,the horse which I presume they haven’t met before, put their hands near its mouth, when one of them gets bitten, it’s into the hands of the coh and the police, something has to be done regarding the overcrowding and over familiarising with the guards and animals, they are there to do a job, not for entertainment. The way parents push their young children right up to the horses is ludicrous and the parents won’t take the blame if anything happens. On many days the place is absolutely mobbed and all surrounding two horses it must be a nightmare for the guards, they must dread going on shift there.

I've owned horses in the past and never allowed them to be fed or given treats by hand . This can lead to biting when treats aren't forthcoming. And truth be told, horses noses are very sensitive and most really dislike being touched or stroked on the nose.

A horse's head can weigh about 300lbs so if their head collides with yours it can kill you.

As part of the attraction it might be a good idea to put educational boards inside the gates. I'm sure that the majority of the people think that the guards are there for entertainment purposes. A board or two on the history of the guards and their role in life would maybe help educate them. Also visitors there for the first time might benefit from learning about the procedures during the day and how to avoid mishaps. That lady should not have put her hand near the horses mouth.

My brother and his wife own a livery stable in Yorkshire. Recently taking riders out in the lanes near home one of the older horses decided he didn't want to go. Sue, with a bit of coaxing took him out of his bad mood and they left for a trek. He showed her what he thought when unsaddling. He caught her finger in his teeth and pulled. He completely unsheathed the finger and at the same time dislocated it. This is a horse she's owned for 12 years, unpredictable, you said it.
