The studio making Ben Hur first choice to play the lead role was Paul Newman. He turned down the role due to his making of the movie, Silver Chalice. Newman stated that would be last time I wear a dress. Charlton Heston was last choice from looking at the movie Big Country.

I have always liked his M.O., but I never understood his over the top embrace of the gun thing, to the exclusion of reality. But, other than that, I discovered, when I read Jackie Robinson's personal picture biography, Heston was active behind the scenes in supporting the establishment of black owned banks / financial /instituations. A few yrs. ago, I saw Heston's son speak at a book signing in Pasadena, CA. and in the Q /A afterwards, I brought out that fact, and if I remember his son correctly, his son was not aware that his dad had been involved w/ that support work for minority business. But he said that sounds like something he definitely could have been involved with, knowing his dad.

I'm afraid not sorry, I wish I did. The only reason I taped this was because my dad was a Charlton Heston fan and we noticed Aspel was about to sneek up on Heston and we grabbed a tape tp record it, hence why it's missing a few minutes (noone knew who he was going to surprise as it wasn't announced until it came on). Would love to see more of them, there are one or two on youtube but not many. I'm surprised they've never released some of them on DVD, though some of them will never be like when Jimmy Savile appeared on the show. The Big Red Book website (I think it's called) is a good site for finding out who was on This is Your life, both during the Eamonn Andrew years and the Michael Aspel years.
