He was the best Scottish player ever for me. I'm a Ger and I'm no fan of Liverpool, but he was a proper superstar. He was a gifted, skilful, clever player but a very humble, decent man. I will never forget how he represented Liverpool, the families and fans following Hillsborough. He is just a good human being.

My Dad, George Shields (Kenny's former boss), appears in this video. Sadly he passed away on 11th September last year. We were fortunate enough to have a VHS recording of this and last summer my brother got in converted to DVD and sent it to Liverpool FC as they didn't have a copy. Lovely to see it has now made its way on to You Tube.

@@langdale55 I loathed Docherty when I was growing up ('77 Cup Final is all you need to know) but it was only as I got older I started to really like him. I can remember him on a radio programme in the early mid 1990s talking about football. 'In my day', he said, 'the footballers wanted to better themselves and become millionaires. Nowadays, they are already millionaires and want to become better footballers.'

My first ever match, Kenny scored an overhead kick (against Airdrie away), but it was so unusual at the time, it was disallowed. Celtic lost to Airdrie, who sadly got relegated, with Celtic winning the 1st Division. It broke my heart and many others when Liverpool bought him, and the feeling was high expectation that Celtic would have won the European cup that year (until losing Kenny).

In those days Rangers didn't sign Catholic players (Dalglish is obviously Protestant). If Celtic had a choice of signing a Catholic or a Protestant player they would sometimes sign the Protestant player because they knew Rangers wouldn't sign the Catholic player, and Celtic would sign him too. I think football is one of those careers where you have to accept your first offer because you might not get another one (although Dalglish probably would have done).
