You guys touched on it, but yeah this really boils down to In-Group vs Outgroup nonsense the human animal suffers from. It is the foundation of tribalism. The group I'm part of? Good, trustworthy, hardworking, reliable. The groups I'm not part of? Bad, untrustworthy, lazy, flaky. The logical conclusion of this is the complete dehumanization of the outgroup. At that point you no longer feel empathy towards them because you've been made to see them as subhuman. With chattel slavery it led to one group of seeing themselves as superior to all other groups because of an accident of birth, and that the other groups were less than human. Less deserving of respect, empathy, compassion, trust, etc... At that point? The motherfucking hellmouth opens and all sorts of horrible shit is done to people. On this island is was fucking cannibalism, in Nanking it was using infants as bayonet practice, in Germany it was starving people into nothing and then gassing whole families, in Russia it was the gulags, in the United States it was using slave infants as bait for animals. If there was one thing I'd remove from the human animal, it'd be this entire In-Group vs Outgroup bullshit.
