Elenanor might be a sweetie, but keep in mind she can get ugly in about 2 seconds.. Bison should be given plenty of room... There can be personal interaction... but there is a limit to the trust issue with large animals...cows, horses, mules, also

Big Joe is such a good looking bull !!! It's so good to see Dunbar, we don't get to see him and his herd enough!! Eleanor is such a Sweetheart! It good to see her with a few other bison, but she still doesn't like it when the whole herd comes around. It fun watching Maya teasing, I think it is Hoss. Just hope she just stays careful!! Hoss also likes to play with you!! THANKS for sharing the bison with us!! You and your family are So Neat!!!

Re: gates and bison escape prevention How about this? 1. Position the back of the skid-steer at an angle by the latch side of the gate. 2. Unlock the gate. 3. Back in, pushing the gate open with the skid-steer just enough to get through. This way, both the gate and the skid-steer are blocking the exit. 4. This has you facing the gate, so it should be easy to get out and close it with little or no bison interference. If the gate swings both ways, you can do the same thing on the way out. I hope my description is clear enough …

"We're waiting on our food human! Hurry up! " Those bison are just gorgeous. I grew up on a huge ranch on the Colorado/Wyoming border. My neighbor on the Wyoming side, had HUGE herds of bison. I am fairly certain he had several hundred head of 🦬 bison. I don't know if they still have a big herd or not. Our crop was red Potatoes 🥔. You are doing wonderfully, Dusty. You certainly take me back to my childhood. Have a very blessed day!

Dusty, come off the roof of the barn with a gutter, to a down spout. Instead of a flimsy down spout of tin, hang a chain for the water to follow down into a trough for the Bison. On the far end of the trough, connect via PVC or ABS line into a second trough. If needed, a third trough set up the same way. This way, before the first one overflows, it fills the second trough, and before either of them overflow, it fills the third trough. Or rather than that many troughs, you could use a 300-gallon holding tank and daisy chain them in like manner... depending on your annual rainfall calculations.

Re your new sheet metal, you could make the front of that barn that you need to cover in a contrasting color and then you wouldn't need to worry about the top and bottom matching. I'm sure you've seen walls done with two colors like this in houses. My first thought for a bottom color is some kind of grey. That could look good, but I don't know what other colors might be available. I'm always happy to see a new episode of Cross Timbers Bison come out! Thank you!!

On our farm in NC, we use gutters that drain into large reenforced plastic containers. They hold a lot of water. Keeping sunlight out prevents algae growth. Also running a drainage pipe with a grate on top will keep the area dry. Dusty, I know you know your animals, but you have new ones coming into the herd. Please , don’t let your guard down. I was holding my breath when they started surrounding you when you were spreading cubes-just saying 🤷🏻‍♀️. I really love your channel, and have turned several people on to it. Back through the gate at an angle slowly so that you are close to the fence and go you only open the gate enough get your vehicle through than just enough to be to allow you to close the gate. My uncle did this with his cattle because they did the same as your bison did, it worked for him!

Don't do a French drain as unless you bury a tank to catch the water in then drain out into the pasture. Even if you do the traditional drain with rock and the garden mat on top the animals walking over it will cause the dirt around the rock to plug it up and have to redo it in a several years The tank with plywood on top with 2x6 or 8 on top then covered with dirt will be your best way to go. We have done this around barns and cattle walking over it and they are going strong for over 10 yrs. Around the bait runs we may have up to a thousand animals and my cousins love them

We calve angus cows, but on the edge of our barn we have 3" rock Where the water runs off the roof. We tried gutters but they filled with ice and came down the hard way. The rock just keeps from cutting a trough in the ground, the dirt was set to grade first. On short jonts we carry our tubs by the lip on top of the tub, just slide the forks out and pick the tub up that way.. As long as there short trips and no big bumps the carry fine. Enjoy the channel.

Those lick supplement tubs, when empty, make great planters for flowers by your cabins, for an herb garden near your kitchen, or for root veggies-carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes etc-to make harvesting easier. Just need drainage holes drilled.

With our red angus herd I don't even let my wife out in pasture with me when my Bulls are in with cows and they in season. Actually no one allowed in pasture with my cattle without me and only at certain times. I feed my cattle from inside and on foot next to trailer. Great advise. Morning Dusty! Very exciting to watch your video today and a great start to my vacation. I would have a tub catching the water off the roof. Rain water is good for the animals. Another idea is to get a huge rubber ball for the playful bisons. It'll keep them distracted from you. Also to video tape them playing with it. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us and be safe and healthy plus your family and friends. 👍 😊

Don’t forget Dusty with aluminum you can always put a coat of paint on the area that you wanna match the old coloring. I would hope along this one side you’re gonna put a lot of windows. That would give you two things lots of light in the room and a good view of the bison from the “office”!! If you’re not putting on the air conditioning unit in your office I would suggest cutting a couple of windows in that outside wall so you can get cross ventilation and a good breeze going with the fan in the summertime. Are you with Marissa planning to build on this new property? So far I think you’re doing a wise thing to wait and see and get some bills paid. Place is looking really good. It will do even better with the new fencing in the spring. Have you father painting the fencing so you don’t have too much trouble with rust?

I think the water catchment system into tank(s) would be best. Especially in years when there is less rain. You could see if you can find those big square (I think they are called ICB or something like that) totes & run pipe so when first one gets full it will run into next and so on. Last one can feed into a watering tank for the bison. Coz you never know when the rains might not come and for how long it will last.

Re: the gates - Spring load the gates so they close by themselves. Make a flip-over stop to put on the latch end of the gate so it will stop no matter which way it swings. A row of wheels at the right height on the gate would let the gate "roll" along the side of the vehicle so as to not scratch or hang up on it. I helped my Dad work a few head of cattle back in the 50's so I have an idea of what you are doing. The technology is better now. Dad would be blown away!

Curious things, aren't they? Gutters sound like a good idea. Across the front of the barn, you may have to slope it both ways. I like the idea of collecting the water for immediate or later use. Bison need water, but mud doesn't help anybody! Small collection tanks, like you might have at a house would be more work. My quick thought is that a big underground tank might be a nice thing - keeping the water out of the light might help keep it healthy longer, and let you be more selective about where it gets used. Obviously there are complications that need extra thought. Love watching you make friends with some individuals. Big old things! Like tiny cars playing around big trucks on the highway - the mismatch in momentum and inertia can cause unintended damage, and cars and trucks don't have brains of their own to add unknown motivations to the mix.

These animals were protected. For the life of me , oh wait, Elk Island. I loved to go watch them. One time I ran around a path and right around the corner was a bison. I was so afraid. I screamed my friend laughed and it just looked at me like I was nuts. It was winter time They were dosile, but I was still scared. The tank idea would allow you to have water stored against drought and emergencies as well as an additional water resource. You definitely need gutters and you might consider installing them before pouring the concrete so there aren't any moisture concerns from water runoff eroding soil next to the poured area or interfering with concrete drying time. As far as the skidster and the bison getting out, I know you installed the cattle guard across the gate leading to the road which should prevent them getting out there. Since they may be getting into other areas and you may have to spend time either sneaking in/out, is it enough of an issue to warrant installation of a two gate system so that if one gate is open they can only get to the next gate? Love watching the bison! They really cracked me up when they were sniffing the camera!

Might check with gardeners in your area to see if they might like empty lick-tubs to do container gardening. Not sure if the structure in the center can be cut out or if it might be usable to run a watering system through. But I know I'd LOVE to find a farm that had some so I could have a larger container garden.

Boy, Hoss is so entertaining to watch. Really enjoy watching them bounce up and down on their feet. Big Joe is just the best. I know feed costs are going up too fast and most people don't realize how hard it is to sustain. So happy to see the "girls of Dunbar". Thank you for sharing your videos, it always starts my day off in a great mood.

Hello Dusty! It looks like a gutter is really necessary. If you put barrels or something else to catch the water - do you know what you’ll do with it? Emptying or just moving them will take time from a day (or more). If the barrel overflows you get quite a muddy mess. If you run good drains, that’ll tolerate being driven over and bison walking/standing/hopping in joy, you can decide where to route the water. If you needed to, to could put a temporary drain hose at the end of your French drain, and have the water go somewhere else for a while. Just my thoughts… Blessings to you, Marissa & Brooks

I agree about the gutters and collect the water and recycle it for the Bison. Each State has rules about rain water/melted snow water. Some states don't care and some states you have to get a permit.

Maia’s behaviour is similar to a coyote’s when they test prey looking for opportunities. Kind of a teasing threat. The Dakota calf being range raised probably is familiar with coyotes and is wary. It’s actually dangerous for Maia to be teasing him. He might just decide to really go after her and take out a fence in the process. I’ve seen it happen with cattle and bison are more unpredictable. You might need to be a bit firmer with her, especially around your Dakota calves, just to ensure you keep peace on the range. 😌
