This isn’t working - livestock guardian puppy escapes

The Puppy Escaped. Our Akbash puppy keeps getting out of her cage at night and escaping from the goat barn. We are worried about something happening to her. We have to make some changes.

I know akbas dogs. In Anatolia, a lot of effort is made to protect their purity and they are known as a very good shepherd dog. When she grows up, she will be a very good shepherd dog. She is very well cared for and receives a lot of love.

We had a Golden Retriever who would do the same, he could climb any fence we put up; many a morning we would wake up to find him fast asleep outside our bedroom door.

Would suggest buying a hoove/horn file and blunt the goats horns before they hurt ya. If you buy a goat stand it'll hold the goats steady while you're filing the horns down and trimming hooves.

I totally understand your plan and desire for the new puppy to become a guardian for your goats and possibly other farm animals. Here’s the bit. She is a puppy. Her desire and drive right now is to explore her new world. She also wants your companionship and wants to be with you as you have become her family. She seems to come to her calling that’s good. My thoughts are for now till she gets bigger I would concentrate on bonding with her and allowing her to be around the family. She’s so small right now that her defense mechanism won’t save her if she’s attacked by a predator. Just weighing in with my thoughts. She’s adorable. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe

She's extremely cute. You need to close the top of that kennel in with something. She's so little and aerial predators can get her from above. She's very vulnerable right now. Nice kennel though. Also, be careful bathing her too much, it will deplete the oils in her skin and if it's flea and tick shampoo, it's toxic to bathe them more than once in a two week to a month period. Please consult your vet. You're good, caring people and you are her entire world. She depends on you to take care of her.

Put a worn t-shirt on your bed with you. The smell might give her some security and make her feel more protected. Great from Germany

Great set-up but I would recommend wiring the top of crate to the sides because I can see the goats jumping on the top of the cage. Love watching what you two do.

Here in Europe you can buy collars as Bayer (Seresio) may tick flea larvae who is active for 7+8 months I buy it in Holland or Germany (Amason)

Unfortunately with labradors eating poop is trait, either she will grow out of it or she will carry on. I have 2 black labs sister at 4 years old a d still eating poop. As far as the crates are concerned , we left the door open at first with a blanket over the top to make them feel safe and secure.

With all those big birds in your area I would put a roof on this dog kennel, otherwise it might be empty one day. You could use a piece of the goat fence and just lay it on top don't you think? She's an adorable little thing

Hay can promote mange. Cedar shavings does not but does repel fleas and has a better scent .

I would keep her at the house until she is older and bigger and unable to get out. I feel bad for puppies. They want attention so badly. The farm dog can come later. The ones that say just treat them like a tool but you can see are not juzttools.

This is heartbreaking, honestly. She's a baby, she was just taken from her litter, she's not ready to just spend the night alone with the goats yet. She needs more bonding with her shepards (the humans) and needs a little more direction and time to adjust

Many livestock dogs are raised with their animals. She is loved but she isn’t a pet. The next LGD we get will be raised the same way.

@@breakheartorchard4761 Yes, I know very well how livestock guardian dogs have traditionaly been raised, I am not conflating her with a house pet, nor am I some city-bred grrenhorn that doesn't understand country life. I am a veterinary technician and experienced dog person, I do actually know what I'm talking about. She was a BABY in this video, the first time ever being away from her littermates and other dogs, there's no other LGD out there with her to help her through the initial loneliness and she had no idea where she was or who she was with. It's no wonder she did everything she could to escape, and inadverdently learned how to Houdini in the process. Yes, she needed a little more time to adjust to new surroundings and people, and time to learn where her new place was going to be before just being left out there the very first night. That is simply not how you train any dog to do anything, no matter what the oldtimers say 🤷‍♀️
