Welcome Winston!! my LGD happily lived with our goats and sheep - eventually. The mistake we made was keeping her isolated, she stayed in the barn and we visited her. We didn't let her live her best puppy life with the whole family and have access to the entire property. I can whole heartedly recommend that you spend the same quality puppy time with you and your dogs by taking him on chores, walks and give him his own space that he knows belongs to him. As time goes on, he will mature and begin to use his inherent instincts to "own" everything, including the livestock. But the most important thing he will want is you. And that is ok, don't let anyone tll you they have to live only with the sheep. Let him explore your whole place, but be sure that he has his own personal space that is his -where he sleeps, and eats. Make training sessions short and I would definitely start with his name - with treats. Treats are life, lol. A box of tiny peanutbutter cookies will go a long way in his memory building. Best of luck with your new guy - just remember he is still only a baby so please do not expect too much from him right away.

This is bang on advice, there is too much misinformation around LGB, but raising them like any other dog will result in a good well rounded dog that will still do its job when mature.

Thank you, I needed to hear this. It resonates with how I feel he should be raised and trained. We have been socializing him, playing, training, and taking him farther into the property. He has his own space away from but still close to the sheep and chickens that he really likes.

I def agree with all the others who suggested teaching him the perimeter of your property.I’d suggested that you Walk him along the fence line- daily , (both ways) so he learns the perimeter well. He will naturally bond with “his” animals and also learn where they belong. Remember, you only have 3 seconds to reward or correct a behavior. Best of luck! With Winston and all you wish to accomplish!!! We are out here cheering for you!

I had my first lgd that I trained myself, it took her about a year and a half to finally stop playing with the chickens and protect them, then I got another lgd at 5 months old and she actually trained him!! So that was the upside of having an older lgd then adding the younger one. They love each other dearly

We are considering it but think we need to space them out so they can train each other and also two puppies is too much for us right now.

Congratulations on the sweet puppy. I haven't read all the comments, whether anyone has commented on it or not, but since the dog had a lot of fleas and ticks, it is highly recommended to have a blood test done to rule out tick fever, or Lyme disease. Examining feces for worms and other problems that are better discovered sooner rather than later.

Good luck, LGD’s are high energy and mature at about 2.5yrs judging by our boy… bringing him inside won’t ruin him, he will need more than just a couple of sheep in the long term. He will be the guardian of the whole farm if you raise him right.. you can do this x

From what I’ve seen on KZbin the guardian dogs are happier and more effective patrolling the whole property rather than being sectioned off to one particular animal. He could keep the whole property free of predators that way and protect the chickens also!! 🐶

Cute puppy. Since he was covered in ticks he should be tested for Lyme disease and anemia asap. Lyme makes dogs very sick as it does humans and ticks also cause anemia in animals. You will not want to leave his dog food in with the sheep as they will eat it and leave him hungry. If you plan to have him with the sheep all the time invest in a dog self feeder, build a cage around the feeder with hog panels so sheep can not eat his food, attach it to a sled to move it. Greg Judy built a few on a sled for his LGD’s that you can see on his videos about the lgd’s and pups and his dog feeders in past videos. He also usually has pups available for purchase in early spring. Keep in mind coyotes packs will come in, a few will lure a lone LG dog off and away from the flock barking and chasing them then the rest of the coyote pack will advance into the flock and kill sheep goats and etc. It is how a coyote pack operates. Always better to have 2 or more lgd’s working together within a flock.
@TheKraemerLife
@TheKraemerLife Жыл бұрын
We do not plan on open feeding so the chances of sheep eating his food is low. We give the girls a treat to keep them occupied while he eats. I understand the importance of having more than one LGD but right now we were only able to find one. We are divided about adding another so we will need to make a determination soon.
@caseymarion2494

@@TheKraemerLife, you just need to keep him with you & safe until he's an adult. Leaving him outside by himself at night makes him highly vulnerable to predators. You can go outside on "patrol" at night with him (and your other dogs) for training purposes, but DON'T leave him outside, alone. It's simply too risky for a puppy, especially in a rural area where there's any significant predator pressure. He wouldn't stand a chance against a coyote pack out there by himself.

She had over 15 different nick names and knew them all! But when i said ya know what I'm gonna try teaching her to sit, roll over, stand up straight on 2 paws, give paws lol yes it took her 3 days. Plus i make that clicker sound with my mouth, click yr fingers, and a stern ah, ah. Animals ain't dumb, but we love them cause there true odd balls. Repetition is key and just let him be him, he will show u his sides to be known. Thought I'd share my story, sadly this year i put her to rest cause Cancer was in her nasal. 🕊

I've had 3 LGD's over the years, all Great Prys. I found it amazing I didn't have to train any of them. They each came from working farms and working parents. The instinct to protect came naturally. They were each 8 to 10 weeks old when I got them. I put then in with my goats and that is where stayed. I spent a lot of time in the barn and would give them attention when I was with them but they belonged to the goats. I have a feeling Winston will amaze you how quickly he learns his job.

Patience patience patience! Do your homework. These dogs are extremely smart and can think for themselves so don't train the same as other dogs. Repition is key as they have to think about it before they comply. They are very sensitive as you found out with the hot wire incident. Positive reinforcment is the only way they do not take kindly to punishment. They've been bred for a thousand years to be on thier own much of the time and had to think for themselves. You may get them trained fairly well then when they become a teenager they will seem to forget everything they know like all teenagers lol. Patience and mutual trust if developed before then is key, they will get over it. They are a much bigger commitment (especially as a puppy) then most realize. Making that commitment is key. And dont let your other dogs teach them bad habits like chasing balls etc. At some point he will decide to become the alpha of your other dogs be prepared for that. Good luck.

Yay - I have a Great Pyr (second one) and voluteer with a pyr rescue group. Be patient with him - takes 2 years for them to mature into LGDs....He can protect the chickens/sheep OUTSIDE the animal paddocks...it;s recommended that you keep him on a leash around the chickens until he's past the puppy energy stage - that's usually when it's the most risky for killing them - not hunting them but trying to play with them (and pyr paw)....

@@TheKraemerLife, this is VERY normal for an LGD puppy to be wary of everything, especially one who does not have an older experienced LGD on site to help train him. You are absolutely correct to keep him near by with you at all times in order to bond closely with him as his "shepherds." If you do so you will eventually have an amazing & reliable PARTNER in guarding & caring for whatever livestock he sees as being important to you - including poultry or hogs. Pyrs & other LGDs are NOT typical pet breed type dogs. Bonding to YOU is job one with an LGD puppy. Their thousands of years of breeding provide the natural instinct to protect sheep or goats, which kicks in automatically as they mature. They're independent thinkers, who make their own decisions. IF they're closely bonded to you they'll listen & work in cooperation with you. Otherwise, you'll have a huge powerful dog that's stubborn as a mule & regards you as an oddity or amusement with questionable judgment and strange behavior who is best ignored, but useful because you do at least regularly provide them with food. What could possibly go wrong, right? 😬

Nice puppy. Its a while before they mature into their job. I watch another family that just had to put down their LGD for aggression. It attacked their goat and donkeys. Their older LGD saw it as a threat and attacked the pup in return. It couldnt be saved. Very sad for them all. I do think thats rare though.
