What's his secret. Being a polyglot or multilingual is a choice. It's not a big deal. I enjoy learning foreign language and I don't have a secret. We can't replicate talents, Steve. Do you know how does my brain work? I have no clue how does your brain work. Can you make someone who doesn't like learning languages to become an enthusiastic student who devotes time to learn a foreign language? Is there was a secret everyone would be a polyglot just like you? We are not all the same and that is the reality.

I did the same. I learned exactly 5,219 words in Dutch the hard way by actively encoding them in a very short time because it was a 200-day challenge, about 2 hours a day. Then I switched to passive learning to give myself more context for these words. Active learning is extremely effective for acquiring knowledge, and passive learning is great for retrieval. Combine these two wisely.

I'm an American at something like a B1- or B2-level in Spanish, Russian, and German. One of my favorite techniques is to listen to target-language videos with English subtitles. I read ahead and then mentally translate into the target language, and so, by anticipating the audio, I'm able to understand something like 95%, instead of maybe 60% without subtitles.
@samaval9920Ай бұрын
Some advocate doing all 4 language skills at same time when choose to study any 1. For example, in addition, to also transcribe target language dialogue while reading subtitles then speak sections of dialogue simultaneous =!to shadow sequential .=‘? etc.all 4 language skills use at same time.
@KWwI-xu7vmАй бұрын
Wait how do you only understand 95 percent when reading the subtitles in your native language
@Musicienne-DAB1995Ай бұрын

I listened carefully to the presentation about Artificial Intelligence and shared my thoughts with my friends in the English WhatsApp group. I told them that relying solely on AI to speak another language in the future would be like using an exoskeleton to walk: if we do this, our muscles will weaken. Similarly, our brains will also deteriorate if we only speak our own language and let AI translate for others to understand us.

I do think that minimizing your accent is important. Not that you don’t embrace your identity, but you make it easier for the person you trying to communicate to. For example, I have elderly patients who may not have a lot of exposure to people outside of the United States, and when they have a caregiver or provider who speaks with a thick accent, it’s very distressing to them because they simply can’t understand what is being said. You add to that difficulty hearing and diminished vision and it just makes communication that much more challenging. If you have a message worth hearing, make it understandable to the best of your ability. Remove as many obstacles for the listener to hear what you are trying to communicate.

I don't know how anyone could get as good as native speaker in more then 3 languages I would think. Four at the most. Here is why I think that way. I will give you three words, Vaccum Cleaner, Pacifier (as in baby pacifier), and cork screw (what you open a wine bottle with). All three of those words are not the most common words. But almost all native speakers would know them if they exist in that language. To me getting all the words like pacifier and vaccum cleaner my head would explode. There are tons on nouns!

Tedious for whom? I love translating, it’s a creative process since it involves a lot of transformations and you need to master your own native language to be able to do it well. Also, it may be a good method for someone with a high verbal IQ simply because such people already have a knack for thinking very explicitly and thoughtfully about their word choices so it makes sense to use - good, idiomatic - translations as a learning aid

Do you think it would be possible with the help of AI or whatever, to transcribe the Persian language into a Latin alphabet, to be used only as a tool for speakers of languages with Latin alphabets to acquire easier speaking and listening comprehension? Is there maybe someone already doing something like that?
@ThelinguistАй бұрын
AI can do that but I wonder if the service is available anywhere.
@javierblascomartin5150Ай бұрын
@Thelinguist I have asked to chatgpt and It says that exist a standar latin alfabet for persa, arabic and many other languages, with this proporse. Would be amazing to have this posibility implemented on Lingq. Then, maybe many people would be interested to learn speak arabic and even read in the latin alfabet 🙂
@javierblascomartin5150Ай бұрын

The same applies to the Slavic languages, and if you know one of them, you will understand the others more easily. For the sake of comparison, Czech and Slovak separated from each other only a few hundred years ago, and today's New Latin languages are also 1,000-1,500 years ago they became independent from each other.
