Most animals actually stay the hell away from porcupines and the few that don’t, clearly learn a terrible mistake after getting smacked by a porcupine’s tail resulting in a face full of razor sharp quills. If you get "quilled", to remove the quills with the least amount of damage, cut the quill on the tube section prior to trying to pull it out. Cutting the tube allows it to deflate slightly which allows the barbs to retract slightly.

Our dogs got into porcupines and got a snout full of quills on several occasions. Pulling them out with a pliers really sucked for the dogs. The ones that had protruded through were easier to remove than the ones which were only part way through cause you had to pull against the direction of the barbs with those. Just used hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant.

I've heard that the best way to remove the barbs is to: 1st - cut them off to allow them to deflate, as they are hollow and full of air. 2nd - twist them as you pull them out, as it causes the barbs to lay down and release their hold in the flesh. All theory for me though - never seen anything with quills in it, so I never needed to try these techniques.

Twist lmao, Thays like twisting a fish hook out of your body and creating a larger wound
@jackreisewitz7219
@jackreisewitz7219 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgewashington7982 The difference between a fish hook, and a porcupine quill, is that the barb on a fish hook is solid and unmoving. But the barbs on a porcupine quill are flexible. They lay flat, creating a smooth, flat surface when striking the target, allowing easier and deeper penetration. It is when the quill is pulled backwards that the barb springs up. This is why twisting the quill while removing it causes the barbs to flatten out again, allowing for easier removal, rather than tearing a larger hole on the way out as a fish hook would do. That's why yanking a porcupine quill straight out causes more tissue damage than spinning them as you pull the out. At least that is what people who have had to deal with this claim. As I said, I've never had to try it. Hope you never have to find out, either.

It is simply a misconception that cutting embedded porcupine quills will “deflate” them, making it easier to remove them. Cutting the shaft makes the quill splinter more easily which ultimately makes it harder to remove.

In 1986 I got 2 small quills in the back of a thumb as I was leaving Crater Lake NP - it was dusk & I was curious 'cos I thought it was an injured animal crossing the road! Put up with it for a few days but had to visit a surgery in San Luis Obispo eventually. He used a scalpel to cut a small cross by each & removed them that way. I'm a limey & still have them as a souvenir - cruelly I had to pay the bill as well. Can't imagine having hundreds, especially around mouth/soft tissues. Ouch!

I reckon a human could hunt those fairly easily. They get a long stick, carve the end into a sharp point and then poke the porcupine from a safe distance.

There's one video from Wisconsin recorded by a kayaker of a porcupine eating on a log floating in the water. It starts exhibiting signs of distress as it runs along the length of the log and falls into the water. It goes into panic mode as it struggles to keep it's head above the water, but something in the water pulls it under and nothing. They paddle closer to see the porcupine drowned and the carcass could be seen vibrating from something feeding on the flesh on it's underside. They paddle closer to see it was a massive snapping turtle with it's front legs and head covered with quills. If the quills can penetrate the thick hide of a turtle like that, the leopard is done for.

@squishybrick 2 жыл бұрын
Considering how they're built, I wonder if repeatedly twisting the quill would loosen it before pulling it out. Since they're designed to catch on the inside of the flesh, if you twist it, you rough up the flesh a bit and loosen the quill's grip, possibly allowing you to pull it out without it trying to grab? Just a theory..

Someone mentioned you should cut the quill where it’s tubing. Cutting it down apparently deflates the quill slightly making it easier to remove. I think twisting it might do more damage than needed

And a little twist when removing the quills doesn't allow the barbs to dig in as much. But definitely deflating them is priority. Found this out after we got our hunting dog shreeking a few times as we de-quilled him!! Sorry Riley ☹️

@nfldshorty21
@nfldshorty21 2 жыл бұрын
The only thing cutting the quill does is make them shorter and therefore more difficult to remove. Sometimes they are cut so short that the end is no longer visible and the doctor has to cut the skin to be able to see and remove the quill. I’ve actually removed hundreds of thousands of quills from animals including surgery to remove ones that got embedded by poor removal techniques like that.
