This was important in the f1 car but here its just a connection with the f1 car

It's definitely not for weight. If that was the case they would be using very basic paint. 18 layers can weigh kilos all up. It's almost certainly for aerodynamic flow over the bonnet. For downforce cars, little imperfections like the Merc logo can have a significant effect on aero features down stream, such as the cooling vent in front of the windshield or any vortex generators further down the car.

They did that too on the Merc EQXX concept. It's Ok but for me, the badge is one of the few tangible things that gives a car it's identity, so they could have spared it by making it thinner then made the car more powerful by 5 Cc to compensate for the few grams. I would imagine that it has less to do with weight and more to do with air turbulence. The badges create tiny disturbances in the air as it passes over the car, and the faster the car is traveling, the further that disturbance travels over the car impacting ducting and other lowered efficiencies.

I think having the badge painted rather than stuck on is more for less drag. The difference in weight between a plastic ring and 18 layers of paint I don't think would be enough to warrant painting over sticking on a piece of plastic. But when there's something stuck on, there's that bit which gets caught on the air when you're flying over 330 km/hr
