55:34 Super small detail but I love how the Aperture logo and font changes throughout the decades both in game but also in the loading screens. Love how the art direction changes as well throughout the decades.
@keeneym

The load screen and logo/company name variations throughout the game are one of my favorite parts. Also speaking to the art direction, its crazy how good they are at the transitions all over the place. Like starting out with the fully overgrown and broken down rooms, to GladOS slowly rebuilding and cleaning up more and more each room. To the decade shifts and seeing the past versions of the buttons/cubes/room elements/surfaces. Such a well made game.

9:49 - *“Experiment discontinued.”* I really wish they had made the audio clips that play when you activate these doors more obvious, because a lot of players pass by this place and never find out about them. I'm glad you got to hear them! 12:47 - *“…But this is a time to be tenacious, okay? Okay, okay, okay. Please don't- Oh my god! Oh my GAAAWWWD! EEEEEEeeeee!”* Excellent tenacity! 👍 17:05 - *“Why isn't it letting me enter?”* Doors generally work best when you try to pass through the _open_ part, rather than through the frame around it. 18:34 - *“Oh my god, I love that it's, like, old! Haha, I feel like an idiot, right now.”* No, that was how we _all_ reacted, when we saw this for the first time. 😁

"Say goodbye, Caroline." "Goodbye, Caroline." "She is a gem." 😂 Buty of history gaming history for you: Portal started love as a game called Narbacular Drop, developed by a small team. Valve saw it and decided to hire that team and turn that concept into Portal. A few years down the road, they did that again with a dev team making a game with physics gels. And thus we got some of the most interesting puzzle gameplay of all time. There's also a great documentary here on KZbin about the Portal Flash game, which you should watch after finishing the game.

Honestly, of the playthroughs I've watched of people playing/figuring out this game's story and nuances, yours is one of my favorites. You take a lot of time just talking and figuring things out either logically or intuitively and you do go back/get updated on any things you've missed like Chell's name on the potato project or the Portal comic. Really look forward to more of this series and seeing you figure out all of the story and implications of this game!

I love your face as you fly through the Aperture logo. Yes Cave is Voiced by JK Simmons, every time he talks, I think he is going to rant about spider man pictures. Cave CERTAINLY sounds more like a salesman than a scientist to me as well. Man some of these Cave messages are a bit unhinged. This second pump station was the first spot in the game where I got stuck for like 20 min. I could see every possible portal surface, just never made the connection to do the two on the floor at the same time. I even went through the exact same thought process of "well I can't see that when I am up there" I just took forever to actually work out how to do it. I really do love the "time travel" concept of just seeing the decades change as you make it higher up the stack of abandoned sections of the mine shaft. I am still wondering about the orange jumpsuit sign as well. Is it just a "easter egg"/joke about Chell, or just like saying "don't let test subjects in the office area"? I don't know. YOU DID KNEW IT I don't want to answer any of your actual questions for spoiler reasons. But you made the Glados Caroline connection (whatever that ends up being) SO quick! Also I think you are exactly right about her voice being different and why. Like I feel like maybe PotatOS is more "just Glados" compared to when she is Glados+"all of aperture". Kind of like how once Wheatley was plugged into the Glados rig, and had all the power his voice/thoughts/demeanor changed. The lore and storytelling mechanisms in this are so great!
@StefanConstantinDumitrache
@StefanConstantinDumitrache Ай бұрын
GLAdOS jokingly reveals that more voltage leads to more "scheming". I think with less voltage she is more human than AI, while more voltage makes her more of the calculated evil. Wheatley has the same behavior. And still they are both evil in different ways when connected to so much power.

J.K. Simmons (or rather the composite average of all personas he typically portrays) reminds me so much of my Dad. In both the good and the bad ways. He can be reassuring or even nurturing at times, but other times, he can cripple me with the slightest expression of disappointment, let alone an expression of anger. I resent him, but I crave his respect. When I disagree with him, I want to prove him wrong, but I cant help doubting myself. I want to be my own man, but although i may disagree with him, I can never simply ignore his input because I know that fundamentally, he wants me to succeed, even if we define success differently. I both fear and love him. you know, like in a totally normal, psychologically healthy way…

As for "did they think of this while making Portal 1?" No, the whole Caroline/GLaDOS thing came about because they couldn't get a voice actor to play Cave's harried assistant so they decided to give Ellen McClain the role and the plot developed from there.

About the voice change, I think GLaDOS' voice is coming out of an old radio in the potato rather than the usual high tech speakers of her old body and that's why she sounds different.

Funnily enough at 52:00, you can technically shoot another portal through portals, but it's really difficult. Like your gun needs to be through but not your character. They do it in portal speed runs and it would be really entertaining to see you react to some of those speedruns when you're done with the games. They aren't just good at the puzzles, they BREAK the puzzles haha
@XeZrunner
@XeZrunner Ай бұрын
They practically patched in for the second game, but only with flat surfaces. If a surface is angled, you can have just your eyes (gun) through the portal, and then you can replace the portal while you stay in place. Agreed though, speed runs of this game are super fun!

If you're into the 50s-60s Aperture lore, Portal Stories: Mel is a really good game to play after P2. It's community-made so it's not official lore, and the puzzles are a bit harder, but it's pretty accurate to what most people see going on during that time period. The voice acting in it can be a little iffy, of course they don't have J.K. Simmons voicing Cave, but they do well enough that it's still a really good story.
