Hi John, I was that “guy”. Am really sorry about the wake… A little more to the story… You were between Deering Harbor and the Peconic river past Greenport and I remember exactly when it happened…I saw you at the last minute after I was obstructed seeing you by the ferry… and I was also being pushed toward the shore from some jerk in a commercial lobster boat who came around the point on the inner side (he went between me and a sailboat). That is a really busy spot with a ton of traffic. Again, am sorry for the wake… i was probably going 28kts but the boat puts up a lot of water.
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 жыл бұрын
Apology accepted! You're explanation about the lobster boat makes sense because you were much closer to shore than most of the boats going through there. I'm always ready to point the bow out if needed, so it worked out OK. I appreciate the explanation!

@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you for accepting my apology…. It’s a brand new boat (with some blind spots because of the cockpit that I’m getting use too and it rides super high on the bow).. Hey John, would like to suggest a video with a quick explanation of what you look for in the contour lines of a spot that makes you think it is worth prospecting. I understand the rapid depth changes and the tighter lines that show when that happens, but is there more to it? Starting ending depth of the wall, length (distance) of sharp contour increase, bottom type (mud), etc. Your insight would be extremely helpful in choosing (and having reasonable confidence in) prospecting spots. Thanks as always!!!

Nice video, have the new Skinner fluke rod on order, going to hit the Nantucket shoals for a fluke/seabass trip. I see people using 4-5 Oz bank sinkers with a high low rig. What's a good assortment of fluke bucktails , seems like a decent assortment of 2, 4 and 5oz might be a good start. How important is having a teaser rig?
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 жыл бұрын
The teaser is very important, as evidenced in this video. If you're fighting a lot of current in Nantucket though, removing the teaser will allow for a lighter weight bucktail. Off Montauk and Block we fish 2 to 6 ounces. It's important to not go heavier than 15# line, else the extra drag will force you to fish heavy. Enjoy the rod!

I just measured - 2.6 miles. Didn't realize how close it was. That must be a beautiful trip. My point is sometimes I know I'm doing something a little extreme, like when I fish the Shinnecock Reef 2.7 miles out in the ocean. I get that those guys don't normally have to deal with kayaks. But when I'm in a small bay in a 16-ft boat, that's pretty normal, and someone in a big heavy craft should accommodate the numerous smaller boats.

I really didn’t like the way the guy cut that close to you. I don’t understand why someone with a boat like that has so little respect for a fellow angler. SMH just because you got a big boat don’t mean you own the water. Could have slowed down. No need to hurt no one. I mean you could have been flipped or thrown out or made you take a bad fall in the boat. My Late Father would have a fit if I ever said I was going fishing by myself. He would take off work or try to talk me out of it. One of his best friends died while fishing by himself and had a mild heart attack and fell out of the boat. Just one of his rules. I love to fish alone but don’t much cause of my Dad!

Do you think that commercial dragging is destroying the fluke population? The idea of high grading or culling their catch, then throwing hundreds of dead fish overboard is totally disgusting... In the sound, on the north shore, places like Port Jefferson get totally decimated. by 1 or 2 dragers.
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 жыл бұрын
I don't know. The draggers are an easy target, but this has been a long downward trend.
@GeorgeScocca3 жыл бұрын
There's a lot going on in the fluke fishery, and much of it has to do with the fish moving north and further out to sea. I fish that same area and those draggers have been there forever. I'm sure they're not helping, but they are not the cause. There were many species in the sound that are now gone forever - flounder - tommy cod - mackerel - lobsters and shad. You may find a lobster here and there, but the rest are pretty much gone forever.
@ChromagMTB3 жыл бұрын
I'm old enough to remember the species of fish that no longer inhabit the sound. I agree that many of them moved on due to temperature change as well as water quality. I'm not ready to dismiss the fluke as a species who's decline is due to natural factors. Summer flounder as the name implies seek warmer water, so I don't see them moving north out of range. I hope our fisheries departments can figure out something to save the stocks before they are gone forever.
