he really was who we all should try to be more like. He also was fearless and was told not to perform this song on live tv and did it anyway to horrors of NBC executives and and those in power he took a real stand and forced change in the music industry with what he did with this famous live version of this song. Respect to him for his boldness and unwillingness toi stay silent.

He sang this after MLK was shot in his city(memphis) , this was the same year as that shooting, this is a tribute song. 💜 Elvis grew up in the Ghetto, his idols were first in the black community. As he sang it for the others too, it was written towards Martin Luther King.

The song was written after the assassination of MLK. Elvis decided to close out the Comeback Special with it after Robert Kennedy was killed, which was the same month that the special was being filmed in June 68. It was not only a tribute to them but it represented how Elvis was feeling about what was happening in the country at the time.

Lennon was making fun of Elvis. do you really think there was nothing before Elvis? Did he create the world? After Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977, the African American newspaper, the Chicago Defender explained that: “When Elvis Presley breathed his last breath and the press hailed him as the ‘King of Rock,’ Ol’ Man River cried out, ‘Naw he ain’t! My friend Chuck Berry is the King of Rock. Presley was merely a Prince who profited from the royal talent of a sovereign ruler vested with tremendous creativity. Had Berry been white, he could have rightly taken [Presley’s] throne and worn his crown well.’”

Elvis was never comfortable when people started calling him the King of Rock, or the King, maybe the ONLY popular figure to denounce the gesture publicly. When a fan called him the King once he bent dont towards the audience to address the fan and said to her, "There is only one King, Jesus Christ." You just don't see this kind of ethics and human compassion today from our entertainers.

Yes, I know about that moment when he said Jesus was the only King. But there is another episode in Elvis' life where a reporter said, "Elvis, you are the king of rock n' roll." Then Elvis said, "No! The real king of rock n' roll is him" pointing to singer, songwriter and pianist Fats Domino. Fats Domino later said, "Elvis is right, I don't know anyone who has sung this (rock n' roll) before me. But Fats Domino wasn't calling himself the king of rock, but the creator. For Fats Domino and many black music singers at the time, it was not wrong to call Elvis the king of rock, although Elvis never accepted the title.

If I Can Dream is such an excellent song for someone new to Elvis to react to. It's from his 1968 Comeback Special and it was written in the wake of a very turbulent time in America following the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. The message is actually an echo of Dr King's famous dream voiced in Washington in 1963. As you noted, Elvis sang this with so much conviction and passion. He admired Dr King (some Elvis fans tend to claim that they were friends but there's no substantiated proof of this) and was devastated to hear of his murder. Such a shame that a song with a message first heard in 1968 remains too relevant today. By the way, if you delve deeper into Elvis, you're in for a treat. He sang just about every genre of music: from country to rock n roll, gospel, rhythm and blues and pop. Enjoy the ride!

Definitely rest in peace dr. King. Apparently when Elvis got the news, he was on the set of a movie that he was filming and they had to cancel production for a day because he went in the back room and just curled up in a ball and cry for hours. And I think you can hear this goodness tribute. The nation was so torn at that part. Will the Presidential assassination and then the president's brother getting assassinated and then of course dr. King and Malcolm X and others. Anna course the Vietnam War. There was just so much intense suffering going on and Elvis was so talented that he could channel that and from everything I've understood about him, he really got it. And think about the fact that he always had lots of black people in his band and recording situations. He always did and also he was born into poverty.

Your reaction is right on! I'm glad to see people listen to Elvis that have never heard him and I'm glad to see how his music resonates. I'm 57 and a huge Elvis fan, and while I love all his songs, this one is my all time favorite. It's words were relevant then and relevant now!! The writer of the song wrote it specifically for Elvis to sing, it was in response to MLK and RFK both being assassinated. Elvis had tears in his eyes in that video. I barely remember being 3 years old when this was shown on tv on his '68 Comeback Special!! This song gets me in the feels every time!!

Not a racist bone in his body. Listen to his other music. Check out Jailhouse Rock which was considered to be the first music video in the 1950's. You won't be disappointed. He had problems just like everybody else, he was human. He never got political, served his Country and loved his Mother. He gave to countless charities and nought cars for perfect strangers. I won a radio show contest and the prize was a day with Elvis but our friendship lasted past that one day in time. All the memories of my friend are tucked safe in my heart forever. i saw him numerous times he was amazing he was not only my friend but a big brother as well. I never will get over his death it haunts me everyday seeing him in video's dancing and singing breaks my heart because i know he is not here anymore my mind understands but my heart never will, i saw him a few weeks before he passed he said kiddo everything will be okay i said E. nothing will ever be okay again, i was crying so hard he gave me a little kiss on the cheek and said i love ya kiddo always remember that okay i said love ya too E. that was the last time i saw my friend alive again. I walk past Graceland everyday without fail. Anyway i loved your reaction i hope you will watch more of his music videos love from Memphis Tn.

Wow...That's amazing! What a blessing to have Elvis as your dear best friend. He had a beautiful soul and he loved everyone. He was truly a gift from God. I am blessed to have seen him in concert in March, 1977 at the Alexandria Coliseum in Alexandria, La. when I was 17 year old. It was my first concert and the best concert I have ever seen in my lifetime. Although he was very ill (no one knew it at the time) he gave a performance that was mind blowing! A week later the news papers said that Elvis concert had to be canceled in Baton Rouge due to Elvis being very ill with malaria and exhaustion and had to be flown to the hospital in Memphis. That's when everyone realized how sick he must have been during the concert in Alex. Five months later it came across the radio stations that Elvis died. I will never forget where I was and how I felt when I heard the terrible news. There's only been a few times in my lifetime that I remember where I was and what I was doing when hearing devastating news like that. When man walked on the moon, 9-11 and Elvis' death. What a impact he made on so my lives. That you for sharing your story of Elvis and you. Another beautiful testament of his compassion and love of his friends and fans. God bless you....❤

This song pierces my heart. That performance was in 1968 and is speaking to us all in 2021. After this past summer and demonstrations against police brutality toward George Floyd, Brionna Taylor and all the others, one has to wonder how much longer his song will resonate . It is shameful that all these years later the dream has yet to appear. I’m a 68 year-old white 🇨🇦 living in 🇺🇸. I don’t think we live in the same area, and unlikely to intersect. Elvis went to Hawaii in the 70 s and over 1 billion people listened to his concert on tv I don’t think there’s any entertainer that will ever be able to do that

He recorded this after Dr King died. He felt the need to express the feelings the Reverend imparted to his soul. Some of us Do Not see color, we hear God through their words and teachings of GOOD Men. 🙏😎

What a lot of people don't know, is the assination of Martin Luther King Jr. really affected Elvis. This song was recorded 6 months after the assassination.

He put everything into this song. You should watch the very end of it where he's out of breath and says " Thank You, Goodnight". He needed Gatorade. This song should be played worldwide.

I remember watching this show when it aired I was 11 years old. This song was the show finale and was so powerful my mother was crying. I think I cried too not knowing why at the time but today I do. Knowing that this is in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. who had died just a few months before this show aired makes it even more meaningful.

I'm new to your channel and I go by Tisha. I've been an Elvis fan from a young age and have seen him in Concert twice. I can tell you his lyrics are very deep and meaningful and he was raised in poverty and his friends were black and I know his Gospel songs will pierce your Heart as he makes you feel every lyric and understand it as well.💖

Elvis never asked for anyone to call him the King of anything. Disc Jockeys and teenagers began calling him the King of Rock and Roll in 1957. In a press conference in 1969 someone referred to him as "the King of Rock" and he pointed to the back of the room where a great 50s entertainer, Fats Domino, was sitting and he said "Hey theres the real King of Rock" He was the first international superstar. Elvis was the largest selling artist of the 1950s, the 2nd largest selling artist of the 60s and even though he died in 1977-he was the 15th largest selling artist of the 1970s. He is in the top 3 physical album sellers of all time. (it was much harder to sell in those days-you had to leave your house, find a record store and buy your music-it was not a click away from your bedroom) In the US alone his "certified" album sales are 146.5 million. This does not count a couple hundred albums that have not reached certified RIAA levels. This also does not count his single sales in the US. Until the late 1970s the purpose of recording was to sell single 45s rpm records-not albums. Worldwide Elvis has sold over 1 billion units since 1954 including all forms of media.... 78rpms, 45 rpm singles, 45 rpm EPs, 33 1/3 albums, reel to reel tapes, 8 tracks, cassettes, and now CDs. He has more gold, platinum and multiplatinum records than any other artist. Little Richard another Goat from the 50s called Elvis: "A great integrator. He helped bring all of us black artists in the front door of white homes"
