My mom was arrested at 9mths pregnant (w me😊) while marching w MLK in front of a restaurant in TN which didn’t allow Blacks to dine inside. This was her VERY favorite Elvis song, followed by In The Ghetto & then Walk A Mile In My Shoes. All 3 were played often and early in our home lol Not merely songs, but rather mantras… models by which my parents raised myself and my siblings in a too slowly evolving South. How incredibly blessed we were!!! Elvis had a few nerves that night- defying his creeper of a ‘manager’ to perform the song, a social justice song. He flips a couple of the final lines which in the studio are ‘And while I can think, while I can talk While I can stand, while I can walk…’ And what a beautiful jumble it was- bc we know it was indeed LIVE! No lip synching going on here! The consummate performer, Elvis ‘left it all on the field’ that night. If you listen to the *very* end, you’ll hear a winded Elvis manage ‘Thank you… and good night.’ The song was truly incredibly important to him. The man and his voice were both painfully beautiful- & silenced far far too soon😔 Thank you for reacting to this💚 If you check out Walk A Mile In My Shoes… look for the live with story version! Stay safe & love much💖

Elvis is one of the best singers that has ever lived. He was also a fabulous entertainer. There is a reason he is called "The King". @carolhayar3037 Жыл бұрын
@@douglasainsworth2448 Thx for your reply. Parker was opposed to everything if it didn't mean bringing in more money. Producer-director Marty Pasetta told Parker he wanted to build a ramp for Elvis to walk out on to -- it would be 8 ft. wide & Elvis could stay in the middle or go to the left or to the right because Pasetta knew how important the audience was to Elvis. Parker said no. Fortunately, Pasetta was able to meet w-Elvis & he explained exactly what he told Parker. Elvis overrode Parker & told Pasetta to build the ramp. Pasetta also told Elvis he wanted him to lose 25 lbs., which Elvis did. Elvis then hugged Pasetta & said you are one of the few people who has been totally honest w-me. Imagine how different that concert would have been if Elvis didn't have the option to get in close contact w-his audience. HE would have been just as spectacular, the concert would have had a very different feel.

I love watching people's reaction to this video, all these decades later. This song was written for Elvis to perform at the '68 comeback special, in response to the recent assassination of MLK, Jr. and his I Have a Dream speech during the march on Washington. I wish they would explain that fact before or after your first exposure to this heartfelt performance! It was the final song, recorded earlier but played at the end of the comeback special. (I know people wonder what he was coming back from. Well, he was drafted into the army and rather than letting someone get him "out of it" he said it was his duty to serve, that he is no better than anyone else. Also, his murderer, oh I mean manager (who took 50% and had a huge gambling problem) had him under contract to make x # of movies, which Elvis detested doing. He was a performer, he wanted to be on stage. Pretty impressive guy, huh? I sure think so! Elvis fan before I even hit double digits in age. I had a vast collection of vinyl, some unopened. My boys have divided up all my vinyl and my home has Elvis items everywhere in my living room (easy gift for mom, get her anything Elvis. People will come over that have known me for many many years and they say they never knew I was such an Elvis fan. I always have to chuckle because I never hid the fact that I love Elvis, have been to Graceland twice and I want to go again now that I won't have to chase any of my toddlers around. They all have their own kids and this momma is ready to go visit Elvis and finally get to go down to Beale St., the home of the blues!
