Layne, I am a Dietitian. I had cancer on my 20s. This video hit home so incredibly hard. I got way too much BS judgement, even from other dietitians, about only being able to choke down banana pancakes, cheez it's, and Gatorade after each infusion. Power to you. 1) Hospital visitor cafeterias are generally outsourced. 2) Visitors just want something to eat, they want something convenient that keeps them reasonably satisfied and, if there are kids, content. 3) visitor cafeterias are not the same as patient meals. If anything, worry about the employee cafeteria, since they probably eat from it every day.

Also, what else did they have that Meat Doctor chose not to show? My local hospital’s cafeteria has a big salad bar down the middle, plus a soup station, a fridge case full of nutritious options for busy folks (sandwiches, meat & veggie trays, Greek yogurt, hard boiled eggs…) and hot stations with daily specials (today’s is ginger sesame salmon). Customers can get nuggets if they want, but there are plenty of other options.

Being a doctor, I must note that children are likely not having food from cafeteria - it's for staff and visitors. Patients usually get food from different stream and typically hospitals have dietitians / nutritional services. PS. He is a psychiatrist, which means that he is a physician. fasting and caloric restriction has shown to be the most effective method at slowing cancer cell growth as has carbohydrate restriction. Everyone who gets ill loses some degree of fitness even with just a common cold. The more severe the illness the more fitness is lost. It's a fact of life. Layne would have you believe that the menu (which he linked) provides any degree of health options. It doesn't. Their entire menu is no different than any typical IHOP or Denny's. The best whole food sources they have are fruit and eggs and of those two options fruit is going to directly feed those cancer cells as glucose (sugar/carbs) is their primary fuel source. And before you get uppity know that I've lost most of my extended family to cancer and my eldest sister right now is dealing with breast cancer. Know what her doctor recommends for diet? NOTHING and because it's not coming from a doctor no amount of effort on my part, screaming about studies being done showing that glucose fuels cancer cell growth and that fasting and ketogenic dieting can slow the growth of those cells is getting through to her.

carbs are, without any doubt, in the scientific literature, known to fuel cancer cell growth. WHY would you feed your cancer ridden patient something that fuels cancer cell growth? According to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute "All cells, including cancer cells, use glucose as their primary fuel. Unless it works differently in the US, the cafeteria food is separate from the dietician controlled food served to the patients. Sure the patients, or in the case of the children's hospital the parents, could go there to buy food as well in the cafeteria but it is not what is served in the patient rooms. I have been living with immediate family with long term illness who are in and out of the hospital for months at a time. Here and there I would go buy my family member an order of fries from the cafeteria as a treat. When you are stuck and very sick in a hospital that could be a nice thing and a good mental break to have something different. In the end if you are dealing with a palliative and life ending issue like our family is, what the cafeteria is serving is not the biggest concern.
@greghill158

That is how it works in most US hospitals. Unfortunately the food served to patients is usually worse than the cafeteria food, both in terms of healthiness and flavor. It's all prepackaged garbage that they microwave and serve. I don't know or like this Paul guy, but I do agree that we need to do better about providing better quality food options to both hospital patients and children (school lunches in this country are abysmally bad due to budget constraints mostly).

@@greghill158 In Canada where I am, the food served to patient rooms seems fairly healthy from all the meals I have seen and they are dietician controlled if needed for a given patient with special needs. I have family members that work for hospitals in my city (one is a dietician and one is a head chef). All meals me and my family ever received in hospitals come freshly cooked and not a microwave food type of service. I guess I can't really relate to the US approach since my experience is different and that is what I figured. We were quite close. *I understand both sides of this issue.* I don't agree with shaming etc, but I also think we should try to be promoting more healthy eating and lifestyle habits. If my mom had focused a lot more on improving the latter, it's possible she may not have gotten cancer to begin with (though, I think in her case, stress was a big factor, and not just diet and that she smoked and didn't exercise enough). Got to feed the algorithm some unhealthy snacks... So, thanks for this. I well remember the struggle to get my mother to eat anything at all, even things she was craving up until we actually got them on her plate. My friend was a hospital dietitian and it's a lot more complicated than meal planning for healthy people. Looking at that patient menu, first thing that struck me was the huge volume of food offered at each meal. Secondly, the approach of having a large but ?fixed menu compared with hospitals I've been in where there was limited choice each day but the choices varied daily. Interesting difference! In my ill state I actually think I preferred the second option; I got decent variety in my diet without having to plan it for myself but with enough degree of choice to feel some agency. Anyway, good finale to the year's videos. Happy new year, all!

This!! It is so important to have both options in any hospital! I’ve come to realize last year that chocolates, sweets and all other treats were removed from all shops and the canteen in our main hospital in Malta. So I had to stay there for over a week and ended up loosing so much weight because when you’ve lost your appetite, diet foods are the last thing on your mind. As a dietitian myself, I know the importance of maintaining weight while in hospital so I had my friends and parents scouring the whole hospital for some good tasting food - to no avail!! I had nothing serious so I got through it plus friends and family got me some good treats from home when they visited. But not all patients get visitors on the regular. So yes while it is important to have lower calorie options for patients suffering from metabolic disorders, it is just as important to have familiar, good tasting, energy dense foods.

I have been in the ER of the Dallas VA and was offered food and it was largely garbage, typical high glycemic crap, not even remotely whole food based. We as a society in every hospital cook mostly garbage they offered me two different options and there was only one thing i could even eat of the whole meal the meat and one of them was breaded fish. So Lame dont go get on a soap box when you havent even eaten hospital food. I am an omnivore who eats meat and vegetables as my foundation so i out of two meals i couldnt find anything acceptable except the meat on one of the two meals what does that tell you? That is all bs high starch. You know there is something seriously wrong with the medical establishment when the American Diabetes Association still has bread and other high glycemic foods on their list of the appropriate foods for diabetics. I dont agree with Dr. Dino 's🦖 philosophy but he is right even if indirectly. Go to your nearest hospital and see what the cooks are making for the patients and see for yourself.

As a dietitian, I had a multiple internships in many different departments. When I was starting, I didn't understand some really weird orders that came to us to the kitchen. Then I spend a while at the oncology department and found out where most of the orders were going to. Those people couldn't really eat anything, they had no appetite. We made individual meals for them, asked them if they would like something specific and would try to order anything because in this situaction, the most important is to eat SOMETHING. Literally anything, as long as they eat. Same thing goes for paliative care and people in retirement homes.

Cancer really took a lot from our family in 2014. My mom was diagnosed with lymphoma, while she was battling that her brother died from lung cancer, then her dad died from liver cancer...this was all in the span of 6 months. Luckily my mom recovered and has been doing great. Cancer really sucks and my heart breaks for anyone going through it!

Hospitals in general usually have bad food and they shouldn’t have high sugar soda vendor machines in hospitals I’m pretty sure there’s been study’s when they swap soda machines for water in hospitals it has an positive effect. Not a fan of Paul and not saying all foods served should be whole food cause of conditions.

Yeah, I had to stay overnight with my child at the hospital overnight. Did not have a problem with the food options offered to patients and overnight visitors, but was taken aback by the horrible quality of snack choices for staff provided in the break rooms. Whether or not is actually impacts anything, it just is not a good look to see all that crappy food the hospital provides to their staff.

Wasting is a problem in the end stage, when diets don't help much. Before that fasting mimicing diet or fasting is the best diet to slow the progress of cancer and avoid nausea during chemo. Some cancers benefit from low carb, and all cancers benefit from quitting sugar and junk food.

On point! A family member of mine went through chemo. At the time I was obsessed with low carb, IF etc. Had to force myself not to be condescending and tell - here here, shoulda not have stuffed them cupcakes in your face the whole time. Fortunately I managed to shut my face and instead dug in literature with a fresh look. Aftermath being - dialled down my ego, understanding how freaking little I know of cancer and physiology as a whole, also got rid of low carb and IF zealotry. Hospital food does not matter at all anyways - how long are you going to stay? A day to a few weeks. Hard to induce severe problems nutr wise in this short a time.

Also, isn't that a Cafeteria for employees and visitors? I don't think patients staying overnight eat at hospital cafeterias. It's not like you see a lot of people in hospital gowns in a cafeteria, it's nurses, doctors and just visitors. I think patients have their own kitchen and the food is delivered bedside?

Families are going through enough stress and trauma, if they want to eat some comfort food whilst their loved one is in the hospital, if that’s what gets them through, I think that’s the last of their worries. As many said patients are probably not eating in the canteen and anyway, if my child had a terminal cancer and wanted to eat nuggets because that’s their favourite then I’m not going to stop them.

As someone who spent significant time in a children's hospital with my son who had to have open heart surgery, i can guarantee you that A. Those weren't the only options in that cafeteria, B. The patient menu is different and, most importantly, C. Frequently siblings to those sick kids come to visit... It's a stressful enough situation for everyone... Why can't the kids have some nuggies and fries? Come on... It can be hard enough to eat when you're dealing with such intense stress. Sometimes you just need a chicken nugget.
