I'm sorry that you have to spend so much time defending your actions to people who don't have a clue. No farmer/rancher wants to lose animals. You always go the extra mile to insure the health of your animals. It is sad that you lost a yearling, but to have people second guess what you do, just adds insult to injury. Keep up the good work and don't let the trolls get you down.

I've been watching your videos. I'm located in Alberta, Canada. My parents had bison that we bought in South Dakota. People truly don't understand the difference between cattle and bison. My father quite often pointed out the fact that bison are actually wild animals that need specialized treatment, unlike cattle. My father kept them until his health wasn't good enough to keep the herd. Stick with it. You are doing a good job in a hard enterprise. Best wishes from the north.

A simple way to describe what may be going on here: Basically all plants contain chemicals meant to protect them long enough to continue their species. Mankind has bred out some of these chemicals, or reduced their amounts, in many domesticated plants. When bad conditions hit, like a drought, the plants are under stress and increase the amounts of these chemicals, called phytotoxins, in a last ditch effort to make it to more favorable conditions for reproduction. Some plants produce actual poisons, some produce anti-nutrients, some produce things that make them unpalatable. Some plants that have thorns may develop more or bigger thorns. It's all in an effort to save what plants remain during these rough conditions. I'm really sorry to hear about your troubles. So many are suffering this lack of water, while others have too much. Looks like the next several years will continue to be challenging. I pray we are all up to that challenge.

Highly recommend getting a local botany student out there to do a survey of your farm. Would make a fantastic project for them on their resume and won't cost nearly as much as a professional org getting out there. That way you'll have a good picture of what you have on your farm that poses a risk. Sometimes it can also be fungal - that would explain why it occurred so quickly and why it only affected one animal in the herd

Sandra Rawn the closest vet to where he has the bison is about 25 miles from where he is. That vet is not cheap on house calls but she is worth it. I had her check my horses after they were attacked by a African Donkey that jumped over a 10 foot chain link fence that belonged to the Arbuckle wilderness. I was mad. I was really mad. Even the zebras jumped the fence. That vet charged$600.00 to vaccinate and give me medication for the bite from the African donkey.

All Creatures Great and Small- they don’t practice veterinary medicine like that anymore, there’s not enough money in it! So many small domesticated animals need daily treatment that are portable right to the office is easy money. I know my own vet advertises that he treats large animals but won’t make the trip to the animal the animal must be brought to him, think about that, it’s crazy!

So sorry for the yearling death, Dusty. It’s always hard to lose an animal, big or small. I am just hoping you get some rain soon. These draught conditions are frightening all over. You do such a great job taking care of your bison and hope all goes well in the future!

Dusty - I am saddened to hear that the yearling passed away. It is always an unfortunate situation. When one of my "kids" passes away, I bury them and pray for them. In our country there are some really vile people who are creating this situation. Others are complicit in NOT taking positive action to restore nature to its natural state i.e. weather manipulation, etc. Someday I'll be in a place where I can do things to help people like you who are peacekeepers and love their "kids"! Dusty stay tough and hold the line. You will always have my prayers. Please don't be hard on yourself. You're doing everything you can do.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My first thought after the last video was poisonous plants. Even if your property doesn't have the Johnsongrass, it could blow in with the wind from neighboring properties. Burning is probably the only way to get rid of it. The pond is too low and probably doesn't have any oxygen in it due to lack of rain. It was a good idea to immediately set up the fresh water for them. I thought for sure that yearling was going to blow bubbles. It was so sweet of Hoss to approach her even with you standing there. I think he was saying goodbye. I think she was eating the bad grass for the moisture that was in it. You did everything you could to save her. People need to remember bison are wild animals and like any wild animal, are going to be very difficult to raise.

Sorry for the loss of your yearling 💔🙏.. Around here Johnson grass is something the farmers hate.. Last year a lot of farmers lost cattle from it.. Thank you for being real.. Enjoy watching the progress of everything from the buffalo to the farm to the barn.. 🙏❤️

Dusty, I am so sorry about the yearling you lost. I know it hurts to lose an animal, whether it's a bison or a beloved pet. We lost a much-loved little dog because of the contaminated dog/cat food scare back around 2004/2005. It's devastating. And, of course, we all keep on learning -- we learn something new every day and the day we stop learning is the day our souls are gone to be with the Lord.

I'm 59 now & learned early on in life how heartbreaking raising livestock can be. One cold snowy ice covered frozen morning, I found a calf, dead which I got educated real quick that when they are born out of season, these things happen. Messed with my head for awhile. It is what it is sometimes. Never gets easier but hopefully you learn to deal with it in a manner that is productive. Keeping busy, I guess. Took me awhile to be able to finish watching these two videos. Peace be with you & your family. ✌️🙏🦬

I'm so sorry for your loss. Yes it is a part of ranching but it's never easy. I've been following you for over a year or so and I can see just how much these bison mean to you. So now you do your research and pin point the problem and eradicate it. You got this Dusty!!!

So sorry to hear this news Dusty. I'm praying that no more Bison come down with the same thing at whatever this toxic plant is maybe they was just one little patch and #1506 ate it. Praying that you get the rain that you need to support your fields and keep your Bison alive. Brooks was adorable counting Bison the other day, I did notice that. So sorry for your loss. Praying that no more bison are affected. Stay happy, healthy, hydrated safe. May God continue to bless you, your family and your adventures.

I watched your other video, regarding the female bison that you lost. My heart was breaking. Its the awful drought. I just watched a video that Daniel put on today, and he is having to feed his animal hay.....which, as you know, is not something you want to do in the summer! Unfortunately, all farmers in the middle of the country are experiencing this drought....We had one, but it has lessened a bit. Just continue to do what you can.....The bison are your livelihood, and I definitely feel your pain in losing just one. Stay strong, Dusty. It will get better. Bev in :Maine

Binge watching your channel. Love your passion for this! This episode breaks my heart. Unfortunately the biggest crisis our nation faces in the food production industry right now is the shortage of large animal vets. I also live in a county that only has one vet in the entire county and he's 74. Been looking to give away his practice to ANYONE with a degree. Unfortunately he hasn't found anyone and it scares me to think that our food production in this country is so fragile and no one but producers or those in the farming industry are the ones who realize it. No large animal vets = disaster for our food supply. Keep pushing and raising awareness! Love the channel!

I live in Suwannee County (town of Branford). The farmer at the junction 0f 284Street and Hwy 129 has more rolled bale's than I have ever seen. They go on for over a mile plus. Maybe you could make arrangements. If interested I can go down and get his phone numbet for you. We are not, for sure having a drought. It rains a little or a lot just about everyday. I have to get my acre mowed just about every day or so. The family of deer that lives in my back yard are growing like weeds. Thank God they're protected. I put corn for them and if they get hungry before IAM up they come on up the stairs and eat the corn right out of the bag. Lol. I can drink a cup of coffee and watch them. They don't run when I walk out. They are gorgeous. (North FLORIDA).

Dusty, look up the chemicals in the hose running to the water trough. You might want to consider laying some pvc pipe designed for water. You can taste the difference of water in a hose if the hose is in the shade and if the hose is in direct sunlight. Just a thought.

So sorry Dusty :( Dang that it was a heiffer too :( Your Bison are incredibly well looked after. When you have livestock, you have deadstock. We have issues with Rye Grass here in Australia - we get Rye Grass Toxicity - where if the weather is just 'perfect'(ly wrong) theres an ergot that grows on it. Horses eat it and keel over. I would say your Johnson Grass would possibly get something similar. Even if its cut for hay and has the ergot - you would notice as you undo the bale and its slightly dusty and has a slight mold smell or musty smell - sometimes its blatently obvious, sometimes its 'just off'. Thats about all I can think of - as you havent changed anything else. Your hay looks beautiful, you would know if your grain or cubes or whatever is not right as others in the area would have issues too, And good move putting a trough up near the feed. I cant believe the 'local vet' wouldnt take a prescription from the Bison vet. Its not like hes just 20km away and cant come that day - sheesh. My vet used to be 900km away and used to post stuff up to me, or put it on the bus in a styrofoam esky with ice packs. Or if we needed it within 7 or 8 hours, and had nothing to use in the interim, would send a prescription through to one of the vets we could haul up to if we needed xrays done in 3 to 4 hours .... so if he sent the script through and the animal at home wasnt able to go in the float/trailer - we just had one of us hop in the car or ute and zip up and grab it from them in Port Augusta.

I'm so sorry to hear this. You did all you could. Bless you. I also wanted to thank you for being one of the few channels I watch that comes right to the point to your video title. Contact your local university's Cooperative Extension and get a botanist out there to ID any poisonous plants that might be on your land. Also, have the water tested from ALL your ponds. There could be toxic things in the water due to heat, low water, stagnation, pollution (wild animals die from bad water all the time, but we rarely see them).
@sixpackbinky2 жыл бұрын
Dusty , ask the vet if charcoal can be used to remove toxicity, it’s often used for that. Sorry for your loss and pray you can find out what caused this.
@teresamariner42382 жыл бұрын
It can be and is used on a smaller scale with domesticated animals and people, however, a stressed wild animal, to get a sufficient amount in as quickly as possible and in large amounts to matter as she needed it, I think would be impossible without stressing her to death anyway. I know what you mean tho, keep it handy and have used it when ill myself.
