"The shredding of the social safety net over years has resulted in the situation we have here." Truer words have never been spoken. The unspoken part of "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" is "while we step on your neck..." I remember being a kid in the 80s and it was "get a job and you'll be fine." They added a qualifier to that over time. "Get a GOOD job and you'll be fine..." What do we consider a good job? Apparently, the only "good" jobs are in politics or being rich due to parents. The very foundations of our society (service workers, nurses, teachers, EMTs, construction workers, et cetera) aren't GOOD enough for a wage that allows them to live healthy, happy lives AND save for their futures properly? The sad part is that most a-holes that say Taco Bell isn't a "good enough" job for someone to work fulltime and actually be doing well in the economy are the SAME d-bags that go to Taco Bell to have their food made for them. I know Boomers are thinking that people are just too lazy. Meanwhile, THEY are the ones who drove us into this ever-widening quagmire. It wasn't TikTok dances or green hair...

Yes, and the same thing has happened in Canada since we signed NAFTA. Things have gone too far now. A lot of our old established companies were taken over or shut out. Eatons, Hudson Bay Company, the Metropolitan Stores, etc... Our social safety net has been eviscerated, our environmental and consumer protections have been successfully challenged, Prime Minister Harper's admin was promoting Bank investment products and allowed propaganda against the nation's own Canada Pension Plan and OAS, seized our employment insurance fund surplus (employee and employer funded) years ago and reduced our employment Insurance benefit allowance Trudeau increased it but not all the way back to the old more generous rate. At the provincial level, our welfare budgets have been neglected and are currently inhumane, provincial public housing stock was actually neglected at best and/or worse, reduced over 30 years, health care has separated mental health and addictions services apart from regular health care, and health care has been chronically underfunded and has become partly commercialized. For about 30 years now, provincial Liberal and Conservative politicians have been adverse to put limits on rent increases or make eviction laws more humane. Canada now too has huge numbers of homeless people, we've become Americanized. Beware of the international trade agreements like NAFTA or CETA, they do an end run around the democratically enacted laws we brought in through debate and vote, they give corporations too much power because they interfere in our ability to determine own civic governance

Especially with the recent heavy rains in California in the last year after drought conditions for years the homeless population are going to be severely affected in the wet conditions and want to get off the streets. Being homeless is never easy but its a lot harder when everything around you is flooding along with what little you own.

I think Mayor Bass is at least doing SOMETHING. Its not luxury for these people, but it could be safety. In addition, the ones with drug addiction and/or mental illness really, really do need help and most likely will NEVER ask for it on their own. There must be some intervention. With no one to vouch for them or call for them, it must be left up to government to intervene. I dont think they should be housed along with the non addicts or non mental though.

I live in Echo Park (Hugo's district) and in my district I see a big difference just in the past year. (My friend visiting from Minneapolis actually remarked that she saw fewer encampments here than at home!) I just hope there are options for folks after their temporary housing runs out. We need housing solutions that cost $500 or less. You can't even rent a bedroom in a shared apartment in LA for less than $1000 per month which means anyone underemployed has no option but to live in their car or in a tent. Affordable housing should be plentiful enough to be available for all without having to go through a nightmarish waiting list or public assistance quagmire.

So happy to see this segment on CNN. God Bless Mayor Bass. I just returned from LA and was shocked to see so many people living in filth and squalor. While I gather that residents of LA have a certain tolerance of people who are so disenfranchised I realized I live in a country that is largely indifferent to such suffering. That is very clearly one of the aspects of materialism which I hate. We can do better; much better. and we must.

I house my mentally ill sister because otherwise she would be homeless. There is no hospitalization available for her; no assisted living; no disability services (because she was rejected twice even with lawyers helping). She was in active psychosis when we took her in and part of psychotic illnesses is the resistance to treatment. In order for her to stay here, she must remain medicated. However, the mental health system in our nation is VERY broken. The days of mental facilities are over, and it is a BIG part of why people are on the streets. This woman is doing a great service to the mentally ill by having them be hospitalized for short-term observation and treatment. Society is better off for all (including those with the illness) when boundaries are put in place with these situations. I now watch the work of this woman every chance I get because she is getting to the root of some things, and is tireless in her efforts. She’s beyond just a mayor; she’s an angel who works to solve real issues.

Housing is OUTRAGEOUS….but you shouldnt be having so many kids anyways if you cant afford to take care of YOURself to begin with. Many people chose not to have kids….because they couldn’t afford it. @tonlinesoitmistbetrue my guess is that is a per month price in rent, or per year. Wouldn't surprise me either, NY spending 64 a day to feed asylum seeking migrants. Like bruh... I eat on 90 dollars a month lol.

This is why most people are really bad at understanding public policy. They see numbers that would be huge in their daily life, and can't understand how that actually breaks down to very small numbers at an individual level.

@@timogul Just like people don't understand if you made a million dollars PER DAY, it would take you 550 years to make Elon Musks net worth.
@bhiei11 ай бұрын
Sounds good, but my experience is the opposite of the “90%”. Most of the people living on the street preferred it, and did not want the housing. When I worked in Los Angeles many places had bed vacancies. The reason was people did not want to follow the housing rules. The interviewer should have had Salvation Army or others that manage tiny houses or hotels for the homeless to provide a better perspective than what was portrayed in the video. The usual biased reporting
@PherPhur11 ай бұрын
Well times change and I doubt it's 90% either way. Also depends on the housing rules, if they're not offering suboxone treatment for the addicts then they need to do some research into opiate addiction recovery and how it works in practice, not theory. Also, if they're telling people shit like "you need to be back inside by 9pm", I don't know what to say... grown adults don't respond well to that, like... virtually nobody does, homeless or not. They need to be normal, just make them follow actual laws of the land, regular landlord rules too, like they would be doing if they were living on their own.

How long is "temporary" and what happens when that runs out?
@spht9ng10 ай бұрын
Probably not very long. I’m sure the housing being used is in short supply and there’s people being cycled in and out. Best that can be done at this local level but there needs to be a push from the state or federal level to build large facilities that are meant to house the homeless indefinitely until they get their bearings.

Coming from skepticism.. but absolutely right about mental health and that yes, sometimes providing that help against the individual's supposed will, while controversial, may absolutely be the most humane and safest and most compassionate thing to do (not to mention cost-effective). Those in power (who ever has the power to codify, allocate, and advocate) at city and county levels should watch, listen, and act!
@PherPhur11 ай бұрын
If they had the capability to watch, listen and take real world examples from the people around them we probably wouldn't be in half the problems we are today as a nation. Plenty of shit we deal with, big shit, Europes had solved and they're in a MUCH better state. Better state financially? Nah America is filthy rich, but better in like every other way imaginable? Lmfao, go look, Europes leagues and bounds beyond the US.

Perhaps stop the venture capital groups from investing in family dwelling real estate which is a lot of why the rents are so high, not just in Los Angeles, but everyplace. The high rents are also a result of a lack of available housing... a lot caused by the growth of Air B&B. Of course, of the top 1% and the corporations were paying their fair share of taxes, or paying people a proper wage, this wouldn't be a problem.
