Theory: It's only available in JP version because it was intended to be used for play testing. When testing a linear game such as this, bug testers are enforced to break the game or attempt to skip chapters or zones. This text was added in for testing purposes only, and left in with the thought that it would never be found. It's cut out of the EN version possibly because that version never had the bug test text boxes in them, only JP. Since it took a decade to find, I'd say Nintendo did a good job at making a stable game ;)

I really liked how they made these lines for the first flower guy and the gate keeper align with how they speak otherwise. E.g. The flower tends to end sentences with ...であります, and so does he for this debugging sentence as well. So much care+playfulness put into sentences that were never even meant to appear!

Reminds me Tales of Destiny for PSX... Where if you enter a GameShark code that lets you walk through walls, it lets you get to areas you normally can't in the NTSC America edition. There's like 6 items that you can pick up (that I've found at least) and will appear in the item inventory with Japanese characters descriptions of them... and beside the item it will read, "this item should not be obtainable in the North American version of this game."

I've seen similar messages while hacking Pikmin, though they more directly mention that the reader should contact _members of the dev team_ through email. Perhaps these messages in Paper Mario were not intended for players, but were instead used during debugging so playtesters would realize that, in fact, the message should not appear and the game is in a bugged state.

I'm going to test to see what appears in the PAL version, I'll come back with results. UPDATE: Nothing special happened, I tried all 4 languages, and every one got me a fatal error in the emulator. This is strange, as using the US version also does the same thing, even though it only softlocks on console. If there was an emulator that gave the same results as console, please, let me know. I also want to note that selecting Spanish will make the Save block have a G on it instead of an S. I know why, but it caught me off when I saw it, especially with a game I've been playing since I was 3.

The messages were meant for the Japanese development team and therefore irrelevant, I suppose. I believe they did something similar with the debug menu in Bowser's Inside Story, replacing all the menu options with the string "no need to translate".

This may be a leftover from when the game was being tested during very early development. To let the playtesters know they found a glitch. Which would explain why translations are missing.

My guess is that the developers put those messages in for later testing. If the game testers managed to find them, they would notify the developers. I guess they never thought that normal players would find these messages. Also possible that these bugs slipped past testing.

I remember messing with one of Enterbrain's RPG Makers, and I made my game so if you entered a specific screen without a specific item or talking to the NPC who lets you in or something (I don't remember the details on what exactly I was trying to do), the screen would start shaking and a text box would pop up that said "YOU SHOULDN'T SEE THIS!!!" As a complete programming noob, I found numerous ways to trigger it. Kind of funny to think professionals at Nintendo thought to do something similar.
