I found a Mimosa seed in a bag of rice and used a hydroponic grow light to see if it grew into something, not thinking it was an actual plant! lol

norway here - i’m south of the polar circle, so in these months we get about 3 hours of twilight where night’s supposed to be. this is the time of year that my tropical plants go on a MASSIVE growth spurt, and i feel like i’m pruning, propping up, redirecting, and searching for bigger pots every other day. (on the flip side, during winter i’m just trying to keep them alive as they mope about feeling sorry for themselves) i do use light-blocking curtains in my home, but i was worried about my office plants as they sit near a south-facing window (and no light-blocking curtains there), but the office rainforest is doing splendidly. as the sunlight’s not as strong as near the equator, and there are some periods of downtime (never dark, but twilight-y), i’m guessing this is dark enough for them to call it nighttime and rest - and nowhere near as intense as having a grow light blasting on their face 24/7, of course.

Fairbanks Alaska here! My wife’s family still lives up there, and the in-laws and grandparents have loads of houseplants. Takes the edge off the dull winters. How the plants manage the lack of light in the winter is well over my head, but they thrived, the Hoya carnosa(s) flowered every summer. The only thing that I know they did was have a humidifier close by. Very very dry in Fairbanks.

When you cut an Alocasia flower, be prepared, it might give you 2 flowers to say "thank you". 😂 I used to do that, had some " thank you flowers back", I don't cut them anymore. I've found a channel from some type of biologist that said we should stop cutting the flowers. When the flower dies by itself , becomes nutrients for the plant. Makes the plant stronger.

I let my dieffenbachia fully grow two flowers last summer because I had never seen those and I was so curious! But I’m gonna cut them if she grows them again because they weren’t even that cute, risked rotting and really slowed down the foliage, so yeah I agree with your tip! Great vid as usual

One of the best things I did is to use those Blumat watering spikes (imitations in my case, 1 euro per spike). I have 40+ plants and this makes taking care of them a real breeze. I just need to fill up a big pot with water and the plants water themselves. Also nice if you unexpectedly have to leave for a few days during summer. The soil is relatively dry so there's no chance for overwatering and getting root rot, and the plants just take as much as they need.

In Sweden, summer time inside it is dark enough, because you draw the curtains to sleep. Some of my tropical plants live outside about 3 months a year. They do okay, between 22:00-3:00 it is twilight for about 6 weeks, 1st 3 weeks and last 3 week it will get proper dark for 3 hours. Been trying to grow tomatoes for 15 years, and it can be done, but taste like books potatoes with ketchup. It doesn't get hot enough produce the sugars need for really good tomatoes. Same with maze, really not worth the trouble.

I don't mind cutting the flowers. But the leaves... Since I have plants (no, I'll not tell for how long for I don't wanna reveal my age) I found it very difficult to cut the leaves unless they became garbage. I knew that's better, that helps the plant... but when I got the scissors... 😮 "Poor beautiful thing..I can't do it. Sniff) Thanks to Mr Sheffield I finally did cut my peperomia scandens and even planted it in another vase. I can't hardly wait to cut the roots. But I'll have to wait. Thank you Mr Sheffield! Southeast Norway here; and my tropical plants actually do better in late winter/early spring, as the sun is low enough in the sky to give all my plants some direct sunlight throughout the day, what little there is, without being too intense. Also it gets quite humid around that time. While in summer it often gets stupid hot here, so our southwest exposure is just too much without blocking some of the light during the day - which of course my plants hate (even if it's mostly just sheer curtains apparently), but leaving them in the 40C and full sun burns most of them to a crisp in a matter of hours.. soo..🤷‍♀️ Also it makes being in our living room generally unbearable for us too, even with a fan. Now I have a grow light and humidifier setup all year round and just rotate my plants based on the season, and I'm already seeing improvements. Personally I find that the plants that thrive the best here are those I've gotten as young cuttings, or my rescues that were close to death when I got them from the store. Pretty much any large, happy and healthy plant I've ever bought or was gifted, has either died within a year or so, or had to be cut back to scratch on multiple occasions. Frank, my fiddle leaf fig tree (nearly free of charge over-watered mess of a rescue), only grew in late february-early may, and gave me tons of new growth before just.. *nothing* for the rest of the year.. no matter what I tried.. for 5 years. Now she is under a 36w sansi, and she is putting out new leaves almost every other day!💚

i also suggest, when you have an opportunity, that you occasionally water from the top in the deep and infrequent watering style. what works for me is putting plant in sink, watering until water comes out the bottom. repeating this process once an hour for 3 hours straight. this gives time for the soil to soak up the water, and allows for some of the built up salts in the soil to be rinsed out.

I think it has more to do with the cold that you don't see any tropical plants here in the north (Sweden). But equally there are months of darkness in the winter that will kill anything that loves the sun. For the large south facing windows you really need those tropical plants like citrus; banana; coffee etc., because nothing else will survive there...and during winter it's time for the less needy plants to thrive, well almost. They are the ones who don't look like they want to drop dead in a second. It's a lot of work, needless to say. 😂

I never understood people who love sword plants and peace lilies... They are like alians to me....I don't want to know they exist.🤔

I've been watching your videos from early on, and I've learned a lot! But, again with the "pulling down his trousers and fondling his private parts" comment and "fondling her" about the alocacia that's in perlite are kinda creepy, IMHO.

I re-watched this 3 times. He NEVER said "fondling his private parts"! Those words were never linked together as you have them here. You twisted them to be perverted. That is not how they were said or intended. Lighten up!

I only recently discovered that prayer plants bloom. I'm 58 yrs old and have seen people have them my whole life and never saw one bloom until mine decided it was going to spend an entire month pushing out tiny purple and white blossoms. You could tell immediately it was going to be one of those "cut the flowers off or lose the leaves" kinda deal, so I've been snipping them off for weeks.

What a great video. Thank you. I can’t cut those hard won lily flowers. But it’s a good idea to look out for the other ones.
