The needles will give you grit to keep it from to slippery to walk on when wet from snow and rain. I did my garage floor and had to a third coat with crushed walnut shells because it was dangerously slippery when wet from rain and snow dragged in from our vehicles.

If you silicone the joints inside and out there won't be any leaking for maybe 10 yrs. I worked for Wilkinson Steal and Metals for 14+ yrs.Just saying Greg. The deck is looking great . In the last years before retiring I had a landscaping business where I built decks in upper class housing districts. I know what craftsmanship looks like and in my opinion you and your wife are doing it correctly . Thanks for the update .Ken of Calgary.😊

@@ThisOffGridLife Thanks, mine is just putting down one joist and dozen deck boards so won't take long. I don't know if you had the same snowfall we did but right now we have about 6 inches and it was -8 last night and not expected to go much above freezing until after the weekend. Crazy weather for the time of year, El Nino perhaps? Good luck with yours, those pine needles must have been disheartening 😞

Ugh! Bummer about the needles. I'm sure you could reduce it by setting up some tarps or something, but that would be a royal PITA. I had similar issues while spray painting my garage last fall. It was a breezy day, and RIGHT after I painted, a bunch of leaves blew and stuck to the wall. Fortunately, I was able to peel most of them off before it dried, and it dried pretty fast afterward, but I feel your pain!

Hey, y'all. I feel your pain about the pine needles but hey, you're building a one-of-a-kind house anyway, so the deck is going to have a little extra charm. Already with the circle things sticking up, it was going to show them, as Greg said. Don't be dismayed, Katie. Step back, look at the drone footage again, and savor what you two have accomplished on a thin budget, by repurposing materials as much as possible, cutting your own lumber, and more. I'm sure you know where there's a corner or two where things don't quite line up as you want them. Consider the small things as "charm," and enjoy the artistry of what they bring to the build. You, me, and others are all doing a grand experiment in what we do off-grid. While we may want perfection and precision in all we do, this is just like the Serenity Prayer. "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." You two are doing great. Keep on keeping on. We're here, there, and everywhere pulling for you. -- Donald J. Claxton | The Timberlander aka, "Donny"

A deck that was on the front of our main house when we bought it back ( long boring story ) had outdoor carpeting on top of plywood. What I found was that the rainwater had set on top of the plywood and de-laminated it. I don't know if treated plywood would work any better because with decking on top of the plywood there is the water settling under the decking. My experience with decks ( we have four decks on our properties ) is that it's best to use treated joists with open decking above, typcially non-wood decking. If you the heck with mother nature she will retaliate. PN

I love it except for the sun shining in because, I keep the sun out of my home in summer for energy efficiency. I was thinking about adding a deck above my 8' x 30' screen porch and this would be perfect. I have 2 double hung windows now and would change them to French doors (second floor bedroom 4 of 5) that lead out to the deck on the south side under a huge silver maple tree (pictured in my channel thumbnail). At $720.00, I don't need a class A fire rating on the deck though in central Michigan. It is nice you can use materials from your job to make your home better protected from fire and water.

Metal work turned out next to perfect Greg It really looked professional when you finished. And who goes to somebody's home using a magnifying glass to inspect everything? No friend of mine I say. And the shot of the "pine tags" embedded in that topcoat looked very cool! Gave it some texture and character which I found very eye appealing. I actually thought using that squeegee was a great idea to remove some extra pine tags off the surface. That's using your noodle for sure! The golden rule for outdoors men...use what you got!
