That speech was Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator. I love this track, it takes me back to the passion during the lead up to the Scottish Indyref. It stirred the emotions.

So good that emotions didn't prevail on the election outcome...there's a place for them but always tempered with reality...

I always thought it was apposite that he released this in the year of our referendum on freedom here in his home country Scotland… You just got to hold on until dictators die. Rain on me is from gospel - same theme…

His cover of I'd rather go blind by Etta James is phenomenal too. I'm surprised you've never listened to him, he's massive in the UK

I love Paolo Nutini he has an amazingly distinctive and emoting voice. This track is completely awesome and so well produced. The music is so rich. I love how Paolo talks about contributing to the city where he lives. Pointing out that nobody can give you the power to rise above the iron sky, that is the iron fist of fear inducing indoctrination. That the power to rise up has to come from within and that both love and hate if controlling or domineering can be dangerous. The way manipulation causes division and creates a world where people turn against each other through lack of trust and thus society becomes cold. When Paolo sings you got to hold on, I think he is referring to sanity and belief rather than holding on within the system. I live the way Paolo makes this point by using the famous monologue from Charlie Chaplin’s great dictator. Stuart, if you’ve not watched that film you are missing out on a true classic. If you haven’t listened to it I highly recommend the whole Caustic Love album as it is brilliant. I agree with what you say about people going through the motions, but life is hard and people have so little time to fightback, and the hidden hand of power always seems to be one step ahead, but one way we can fight back is to educate ourselves before education becomes even more corrupted by misinformation and becomes control to the extent it is no longer freely available. I mean once education is corrupted and libraries are gone, information on the internet will become more and more commoditised and monetised.

Paolo is such an underrated artist. This song is a masterpiece! My interpretation about "You just got to hold on" is that we have to stand up and fight for what we believe and see it through. There will be setbacks along the way, but if we don't stop fighting and challenging ignorance, hate, and misinformation, then they will win. It comes in cycles, and the fight never ends. Paolo's cry to hold on and Charlie Chaplin's speech from The Great Dictator are complimentary, not contradictory. Applying the song to the world today, we see an increasing rise in global conservativism with Trump in the US, Poilevre, in Canada, and the far-right in France. Holding on in my mind means to continue to fight against the institutions and social media that promote hate, intolerance, and misinformation. The climate will change, political leaders will be defeated, and justice will prevail. but vigilance is the price we pay since it is a fragile concept that is always under attack

Sometimes we can surge forward (rise) but other times we just have to hold the line (hold on) both of these stances are better than slipping or retreating perhaps?

The message is great. Still relevant, nothing has changed. I feel much the same about "Land of Confusion", & that one told people to use the hands they were given to make the changes necessary. Not enough people actually engage with song lyrics. Appreciated your reaction to this. I certainly come for your thoughts on songs with messages like this one.

Good reaction to a couple of works of art - the 2014 song and the 1941/2 Chaplin movie the Great Dictator. Societies have been divided forever - read Gibbons on the fall of the Roman Empire. Division and confusion - it has been ever thus. It’s the human condition. Rain on me is from Gospel.

I'd love to see a few more reactions to Extreme's "Everything Under The Sun" trilogy, if you haven't heard it before. It doesn't have a video, as it wasn't a single, & it's about 20mins long 😅 It's 3 songs in one, & I love how each song feels like it represents different life stages/realizations.

I disagree with your "hold on" perspective. You have to hold onto your morality, your idea of good and evil and how you treat others. If you don't have a firm grasp on your moral compass it will get completely corrupted. You will lose your way.

I see what you have said as active choices and decisions and behaviours. ‘Holding on’ implies to me something more passive that doesn’t equate to actual change and barely making it (like holding on to the side of a cliff. ‘Holding on’ to you seems to mean to keep hold of (as in keep hold of your morality). It’s all just opinion and interpretation though, that’s what’s great about music.

If I can suggest reacting to I don’t fw you while yes the song is a bit different it displays a bit of cocky Side of big Sean and I’m wondering in your opinion what you think it is cause I think maybe it’s him compensating for emotion with aggression due to the song being about a breakup?
