This Might Be The WORST Grass Seed Ever

Why in the world would I be planting this grass seed? Let's find out.
Long ago (as in the 1940s) Kentucky 31 tall fescue was brought to market and quickly became a favorite for its ability to withstand harsh conditions. However over the years, many many improved varieties of tall fescue have been introduced and yet many still think of K31 as a legit option in their yard over those better varieties. It used to be that K31 was also cheap and for that I could see a use in larger areas, but even that has changed recently. So let's put a plot of this in next to some better fescue and see what it looks like!

I definitely would have seeded and blanketed those bare areas before the severe weather. Those erosion blankets are phenomenal at keeping everything in place and preventing erosion. I've used them on a majority of my 12ksqft lawn that also has a back slope with an 18° angle. I don't see an issue with pulling them up but I've always left mine in place especially on the sloped areas and by the end of the next summer (fall reno) the plastic netting is really weak and brittle. Haven't had any issues with it in my mower blades. Thanks for posting the video. Love the power rake attachment on that Ventrac.

Once again, great quality with your videos. Sidenote. I'm planning to overseed my existing lawn. Just moved to this home, so I have no idea what work was done on the yard in the past. I plan to dethatch for the first time in fall and overseed. I'm not certain of the grass type, but know it's a mix, likely tall fescue and ryegrass (I'm in northern Illinois.) I've been looking at your Kentucky Bluegrass/Rye elite seed you offer. Just wondering if you think that would be a good, safe mix for my yard.

If you think it's predominantly tall fescue then I might stay with that as the main seed type so you don't get some weird textures going on

@@ryanknorrlawncare Thank you your reply. I'm not entirely sure it's predominantly tall fescue. There's two noticeable types in the back yard. The previous owner, I believe, seeded after a pool. One section has thinner blades and a lighter green. The rest of the yard is a darker green with slightly thicker grass blades.

Yes those grass mats are nice but I used some 3 years ago and still find the white strings on my blades after every mow. I say pick it up as soon as possible after germination or maybe after the first two mowings. Next time I would do loose straw and scarify/ thatch and bag the straw once established.

Love the ventrac. That’s gonna be fun. I seeded with K31. Sorry I did. It’s a pale green color not good quality. Grows decent and was cheap. You get what ya pay for. I’ll be over seeding with something else going forward. Probably tall fescue.

I agree that it used to be a very cheap option for areas that you didn't want very much maintenance on, but now it's not cheap anymore either so it's best to get something with better overall performance.

K31 is still the standard for a cool season pasture grass that is tough as nails. A lawn defiantly not but its still the best pasture grass, which as pasture is meant to be mixed with grass, clover and other things good for livestock mainly cows as they are the most picky animal. Ryan if I were you I would just go for a cheap rye along the driveway just for erosion.

I've been using the uncoated k31 from TSC looks just like this. It definitely had its share of weeds at the beginning but once under control we've got some of the best looking grass on the block. 🤷‍♀️

I found Kentucky 31 to be straight up garbage. Germination is slow and the coverage is awful. I've been using Jonathan Green Black Beauty for 2 years. Best on the market so far.

I use the tall fescue from GCI. Worked for me.
