My first job 50 years ago was transferring auto titles in Texas. Out-of-state vehicle purchases and people relocating to Texas were a constant headache, especially regarding taxes. Bottom line: don't trust the dealer, EVER! Talk to your state's DMV first and make sure you know what needs to happen to avoid unnecessary expense and frustration.

My husband said that you guys should look into claiming out of state taxes paid on your 2022 tax return. You may be able to recoup some of the money that way. Hope that helps!

I bought every one of my new motorhomes out of state. I never paid sales tax. 4 motorhomes 1999, 2004, 2007, 2020 all different Rv dealers. I took the paperwork back . Paid sales tax and title in my home state. The dealer misinformed you, you should go after that crooked dealer. La Mesa is crooked. I would get a lawyer after La Mesa. I also bought 7 brand new cars that same way. The dealers never screwed me. Every Rv dealer knows how to sell an RV to someone out of state.

I bought my 2022 Winnebago Travato KL online at NIRVC. I live in Dallas and the NIRVC here didn't have the van here, it was in Las Vegas. I flew there to buy it and the staff there were great. They handled everything with my Credit Union here in Texas and the paperwork went smoothly. When I registered the van here in Dallas I actually got over a $1200 refund from the State because the tax was overpaid. Needless to say, NIRVC did a great job dealing with this out of state customer.

I am sorry that you went through all that. My husband bought me a Suburu Crosstreck 5 years ago. We went to the Dealership. Picked out the car we wanted. They took us to the finance office. Showed us what was what. We made an apt to come back the next day to get the car. We went to our bank and got a cashiers check to pay for vehicle. Got to the finance department and they proceeded to have us sign a bunch of paperwork. I looked at my husband and said, " do they know that we have a cachiers check right now to buy this? The finance guy wanted us to finance the car. We said no. We will NOT have any bills ever. We were getting up to leave at that point ( after an hour ) of dealing with them. Finally I said , either you want this cashier's check or you don't and will go to the other dealership? which is it? Well after awhile, they took the check. Yeah, I feel your pain. :(

Most insurance companies will allow you 30 days from the time your policy starts to have the camper registered. So if your buying from out of state, don't let the dealership register it for you, just get your insurance and register it when you get home.

IMHO - someone at the dealership organization knows about this and you probably NOT the first to get screwed. That is really bad customer service and IMHO it appears deliberate. Did you consider filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or maybe small claims court?

Same thing happened to my husband and myself, but in Kentucky. We ended up paying the taxes in our state. Then we filed a case with the Better Business Bureau online. We submitted all of our documents from the sale and the documents for where we paid our taxes in our state. The Better Business Bureau contacted the dealership. Two weeks later we received a certified check for the amount that we had to pay for our taxes in our state from the dealership. The Better Business Bureau remove the report. It takes a little time but it’s worth it to file a report with a Better Business Bureau. It’s a faster process if you submit all your paperwork out front and your receipts. It shouldn’t take more than one month to complete your case. Just thought I’d share this information with you.

This is actually a Louisiana issue. When we moved to Louisiana from Texas, we had to pay sales tax on our vehicles to get them registered in Louisiana - surprise!

We had a similar experience and we found out we could get a PO Box in the state that we had purchased it in and became a state resident at that time so we did not have to pay the sales tax. We came back to our state because we had it registered to our other state home PO Box.

You seriously need to contact the AZ department of revenue and have them refund you the $1200! It will take some legwork and patience, but for $1200!?!? I prepare income taxes and have for 26 years, you should be able to get that $ back! And start the process before tax season and things get crazy!

I feel your pain. I live just outside New Orleans and bought my new vehicle at a New Orleans East dealership 10 days before Katrina. We evacuated to Tennessee, our house went underwater as well as the dealership. After a month in Tennessee, brought my car to dealership in Memphis for minor issues. They had it for several days and each time I called I was getting the run- around about when it would be ready. Finally the sales manager told me the company had no record of me buying the car!!

Long story short after many temp tags in Tennessee and Louisiana, I ended up paying another sales tax to register the car in Mississippi (don't ask) then finally a year and a half later once we were back in my house, my Louisiana license plate arrived in the mail!!

You can’t double tax. You need to talk to the Louisiana Department of Revenue. I was going to buy a trailer from Wisconsin that charges their state tax and license it in Wyoming. I called my county in Wy and asked about the tax and they said I would have to pay it again in Wy. So I called three other counties in Wy and they said I wouldn’t have to pay. So I called the Department of Revenue in Wy and the Director said if my county tries to charge tax to immediately call her and she would straighten my county out. I ended buying from another dealer in a different state.

This happened to us…bought a car in Texas. Paid Texas sales tax. Live in a different state, so, I contacted Texas comptroller’s office and they were gracious. They explained what forms I needed to get the difference back. The dealership, high end and up their own flowery make and model,didn’t do squat for us.

I'm so sorry this happened to you guys, but thankfully with your dedication and hard legwork you were able to see it substantially reduced. This also something people need to watch with buying from dealers on sites like ebay. Thankfully, I had a dealer that explained the entire process to me and what I needed to do in order to have my new vehicle registered and titled in my states of WV before taking possession of it. Sorry for what you had been through for a RV. Thank you for sharing the experiences. I did buy a van out of state that agency was in Texas. It looked like the auto agents in Texas knew the procedure better than other states. I had bought the van by bidding on Ebay and I won it. It was 18 years ago. I did not know any procedure on it. We paid several hundred dollars to fly over to state Texas, tried a ride, was satisfied, paid with cashier check, then drove back to Ca. in two days. I paid state tax in CA then. Even now I did not know there was different laws until watched your video. Thank you for sharing 🙃

Timely video as I'm currently looking to upgrade my Roadtrek into something newer. Originally purchased from a dealer in Ohio back in 2014 and they did not charge me the state taxes as I was registering in MN where I paid the tax. That's crazy. I moved several times in my career and when I registered my car in a new state, they generally did not make me pay taxes if I could show I paid them in another state for that car when I bought it. I think once I may have paid the difference from a state that had a lower rate at purchase.

We bought an RV in Alabama over the border of Florida where we live. Our dealer did not charge us sales tax until we took it to Florida DMV to do the title work. So sorry this happened to you.

“Funny” coincidence. We had a very similar problem with an Arizona dealer, we live in Oregon. Luckily it didn’t involve taxes as Oregon doesn’t have a sales tax but the registration was a nightmare. Curious if La Mesa RV is connected with Luxury RVs of Arizona!

la Mesa rv did you dirty and they created the problem so they should of paid the taxes. Wow I’m so sorry you had this issue. I bought mine in Ohio and paid Ohio tax but the dealership sent me a package that had a document from Ohio showing the amount of tax I paid. When I went to register in California, I gave them all my paperwork and I just paid the difference between the tax in Ohio and the tax in California. I didn’t have a trade in though. What a mess for you!

Yep - found out the hard way about vehicle taxes in Texas. Bought a new car in AK (military) and when I went to get my registration in Texas owed all Texas sales tax right then. Shocking! But there was no way to fight it.

Also make sure if you buy used out of state that the title can be transferred to your state. We purchased our RV in Alabama and the title had the mileage exempt. Unfortunately Florida would not accept the title with mileage exempt. The seller helped us get Alabama to reissue the title without the exemption, but it took a couple of months.

In Ga. It's an Ad Valorem tax on registering out of state vehicles. We call it the Georgia FU tax.
