Jon, at 69 yrs old your video's have given me a new hobby and lease on life. You make turning pottery so interesting that now I am hooked. I've built a 12x16 studio, bought a 822 Skutt Kiln and Skutt potters wheel and I blamed it all on you when my wife started asking questions Every thing I've learned has been from you. But just wanted to thank you for the great job your doing that is helping a lot of people that want to learn how to make their own pottery. It also helps me to relax.

Hey Jon the Potter... love your videos and have to tell you how much they have helped me since I started throwing pots. I took a class and just struggled.... it was so discouraging! Come to find out on the second to last class that if you are left handed the wheel should be turning the other direction! Who knew!? That little adjustment changed everything so now I am doing great. Have a long way to go but having so much fun with it. Your videos have contributed to that so ... thank you! I am a Montana girl and have lived in Missoula and Bozeman. I have been to the Coffee Pot and it’s a great shop. Glad to hear that a trip to our beautiful state somehow made a difference in your life.

A lifetime ago I was tasked with packing a full set of (Grandmother's) fine china for shipping from WA to CA. I called a shop in Tacoma that sold fine china and asked what methods were preferred. I was told to double box the ware, and ship via USPS, which I did, and I still have the full set today. My mentor also recommended the same method and I find it to be quite safe. The inner box does not have to be heavy, corrugated cardboard; I buy gift boxes of various sizes in bulk. I wrap the piece in tissue, use crumpled tissue and/or paper shreds to secure the piece in a gift box. I then put the gift box inside a flat rate Priority Mail box (free) with bubble wrap or air pillows on all six sides, affix label and postage and it's good to go! Priority Mail also includes insurance of up to $100, I believe, in the price, and you can purchase insurance of a higher amount if you wish. This protects both parties should something go wrong.

Another great video and a great story. I love buying stuff from other potters and enjoy their artwork as well. I was just going to ask you if you could do a video on pottery hacks, so it’s funny that you should bring that up. Thanks again.

I am an author, among my many creative pursuits. When I was shipping my paperback books all over the world I found my time being taken up with packing and going to the post office. The postage (due to page count and therefore weight) varied from one book to the next. I bought prepaid envelopes for each book to avoid so many trips to the post office but if someone bought two or more books, I had to have them weighed and purchase custom postage. If you’re going to do this full-time you might want to have a postage scale and a way to purchase postage online. The prepaid “ if it fits, it ships” boxes could be a good option.

Really enjoyed the opening. Your story of skiing Montana reminded me of one of our many family trips skiing. I did my first ever Nordic skiing near the White Mountain. Super hard. It was near an old railroad station; I think Glacier National Park near where the at Izaak Walton Inn is now. Cross country is beautiful so quiet and a workout. So give me my downhill skis. Give your little guy a couple more years and he will beat you down the mountain. Totally agree the mug is fantastic. They did a great job packing with 2” plus all around which is what UPS recommends. I’ve been mailing my work now for a couple of years. Last mailing was careless of me and I had my first breakage. I didn’t leave enough room for package tossing and two of my 30 pieces cracked. Two inches all around means just that on every piece. Multiple pieces add to the equation. Lesson learned! I would buy one of your mugs if you shipped. I enjoy collecting other potters work for the same reasons.

Pottery hack: wax the bottom before glazing the whole piece wipe off the glaze residue from bottom (it will be minimal thin drop like) and the Wax burns off in the kiln. Keeping the bottom clean and stick free from the shelf. I used a breakfast skillet you know that you can bring camping that has a dial for heat that you plug in. Anyways a basic clear wax and it saved a ton of time from cleaning the bottoms.

I buy a lot of pottery online through Etsy and eBay. I think LOTS of bubble wrap is key. You can probably find used boxes and wrap from people who have moved. In Atlanta there is always a listing for free packing materials on Craig’s List.

I guarantee if you switch to using a toilet brush in your buckets you will never go back to that damn drill. I bought one of those plastic round all the way around Bristol toilet brushes and now never ever ever ever use a drill anymore I can mix up glaze 10 times faster without a drill and it cleans the sides of the buckets all the way to the top. I wish I could post a picture I could walk over to my buckets and they're like it looks like I just filled them with clean glaze
