Oh my word. We were running up the TPT a couple of years ago when a very young deer cut across our path. Wow we thought. It then ran across several fields. About half a mile further up we saw ut jump off one of those old railway bridges. About 50 feet high. It nearly landed on a woman running down the trail. Sadly it took several minutes to breathe its last as it kept trying to get up and run. It must have jumped out of the way of road traffic coming over the bridge not knowing of the big drop We still think of it every time we run up there. Which is often. Very useful calculator from X-miles. Thanks.

Hi buddy, so sad 😢 …I also saw an animal in distress once when I couldn't do anything. I always run along a canal and a doe had fallen in on the other side of the bank, she was trying to get back up but couldn't because of the iron plates that are used to hold the earth. I stopped but I couldn't do anything, I continued on my way and when I came back I didn't see her anymore... I don't think she was able to get back up. I was sad too...

You could be feeling sick as your body isn’t requiring that level of additional carbs. When I got my lab testing done I was found to be very efficient at burning fat and only needing around 40-60g an hour max at marathon intensity, hence pushing my stomach to Maurten gel 5 and 6 just wasn’t really needed and what was causing the sick feeling. Also maybe worth changing up the texture of the later ones. I find I can have 4 Maurten and the 5th I struggle with, however I can handle a thinner bodied High5 gel at that stage.

Yes after this weekends long run I am thinking this is indeed the case, swapping the strategy for next weekend!
@luciannealbrecht1902 ай бұрын
Thanks Andy - really valuable info regarding fuel strategy - I find this is my weakest element of training - would much prefer a drink but not going to happen for non elites. If it’s hot I find mauten 160 too sweet - I can get down high5 which is less viscous. I am fortunate in that I do better in second half and so the tail off in speed isn’t so bad. Best of luck for your 10K 😊
@TheFODRunner2 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes I would prefer drinks too but tricky to carry them all when you are running fast, a pack isnt an option sadly!

With the fuelling I would take 1 or 2 soft flasks of maurten 320 drink mix and drink them first and then switch to gels after that and then its not all gels and you will hopefully avoid the sick feeling. Have you considered trying maurtens sodium bicarb supplement? All the pro's are using it
@TheFODRunner2 ай бұрын
I have thought about bicarb yes! But I will wait until after this block, because I have heard it upsets some peoples stomach. So i will tinker with that over winter. The drink mix is a good idea

I find fuelling on race day is not just fueling during race but fueling before and training body to actually run with fuel (food) in the tank. Started with small amounts but now can run with almost a full tank. Not going to tell you what to eat as that is specific to everyone but for me it’s a mix I use. 1 ripe banana moshed, 2 large spoons of raisins, a large spoon of peanut butter 3 large spoons of oats and a spoon of honey, mix it round spoon into foil balls put in fridge over night. Or make an overnight oat mix with banana, raisins oats and honey milk I use has been made with protein powder, over night oats is better than cooking oats as it’s breaks down the starch into easy digest whereas cooking makes the gloopy starch mix. Not saying gels don’t work but it's more how get body used to utilising it’s fuel reserve and how often it dips into those various tanks. There is research that rebukes the effect carb gels have during a race as it states for the crabs to be turned to glycogen and top up the tank in the time frame is not possible and also dependent on the efficiency of your digestive system to digest the carbs and pass through to glycogen into the muscles especially when the stomach is compromised of blood supply, sugars and caffeine more research to show a quicker boost effect and those sugars hit the bloodstream and boom, but too much sugar hitting the stomach t in the later part of a marathon that can be almost shut down as blood supply will be shunted to the muscles can make you sick very quick. A friend does ultras and very successfully uses kid/baby food pouches, all natural just larger pouches to carry. I have used Maurten and tested them against hi5 which are Less than half the price and noticed zero difference. I’m on the fence to whether they work on the whole, I do take probably more for the after-effects of muscles don’t seem to be as sore next day rather than the fueling effect during a race or long training runs. It’s a fascinating subject though and the human body is just an incredible bio engine. I ran this morning 23k on my overnight oats breakfast mix so tank of fuel and no ill effects during the run, no stitch or heavy feeling at a steady long run pace. 🎉🎉
@TheFODRunner2 ай бұрын
Yeah totally agree, I have a huge breakfast before a race these days... big bowl of porridge with chocolate spread! I avoid the fibre like bananas etc so that my stomach is solid for the race but I can put down around 60/80g carbs just from the porridge, then a drink mix on top often takes it well up. I have also read similar studies, but then I am skeptical of everything haha! The elites drink their carb drink every 5k for optimum fueling and good old kipchoge reportedly takes on around 100g carbs per hour, which is way higher than me... so I feel like they are a neccessity, but the brand choice of course is up for debate as to whether they are better than the other brands out there
@karlbratby43492 ай бұрын
@@TheFODRunner banana 🍌 fibre changes as they ripen, greener ones have more fibre where as ripe with the black spots contains less and more sugars which is why you will see tennis players with a supply of ripe to over ripe and even cyclists carry a few in the pouch on there back, easy digest energy and contain less fibre in a ripe banana than your porridge which can actually glue you up with the starch, unless you do overnight oats which are less starchy as it’s the heat that brings that out whereas soaking softens and plumps the oat without the heat. 🌝

Have you tried Precision Hydration? They have chews and good gels but I find their chews a bit sweet. The big 90g gel with a screw tip is handy though. Been trying the Clif chews and they are really good. 24g per chew, plenty of different flavours and even have some with caffeine. Might be worth testing, might help you get that last bit of energy in and down.
