Kicking off 2024 with the GQ build and we have made HUGE progress on it! Removing the TD42 from the engine bay & beginning the process of stripping it down!
This build has got me very excited & I cannot wait to get back in the shed and smash it out! Yeww

Be careful with those relays outside the bay, specially if you go through creeks or water crossings. Could ruin a trip real quick and leave you stranded. Looking forward to seeing more.🤘

Im with a few others here, not a fan of relays & fuses going inside guard, creating possible issues, certainly creating difficulties diagnosing simple issues, and blown fuse, what a nightmare. At least leave fuse box accessible, you'll regret it later when a fuse blows, especially if its a niggling issue, blows randomly. You could just encapsulate all that wiring under bonnet in a housing with topside access that would tidy it all up. Just my thoughts. Regards, Wealie.

If you run around patrol hub looking at blokes who’ve done it that know what they’re doing (from what I understand) a good set of thermo’s, good copper core radiator and a correctly set up water pump (probably a Derks or the like) is fine for most normal blokes TD setups.
@Sethjxl
@Sethjxl 5 ай бұрын
@MarkValascun There is a lot more to it than that. Yes, thermos can work for a TD, but you need to have all the areo in place for it, restrictions infront of the grill removed, correctly set thermostat, good condition head (not clogged up coolant passages). What most people don't realise is that the factory viscous fan pulls 10+hp when full locked up. Rough google convetsion says you would need to put over 7000w through a thermo fan to match that, a 16" SPAL is about 500w, there's a big difference there. In short, it can be done, but you are reducing your ability to pull heat out of the radiator and thus likely to end up with kettle issues. It's not a solution to overheating, rather itnis done to free up some HP drain.

@@MarkValascun Thermos and copper core radiators are the things everyone says to avoid. Standard rad and ufi/quikaz fan is the way to go.
@MarkValascun
@MarkValascun 5 ай бұрын
@@Chris-xb2ei there’s no way you’re arguing while knowing this little about the subject😂, tell you what I’m not the biggest douchebag in the world so I’ll help teach you something instead of the losers pointing you in the wrong direction. Go look up ‘thermal conductivity of aluminium’ and ‘thermal conductivity of copper’ the bigger number is better and make sure they’re both in the same units. A PROPER copper core radiator is the best radiator you will ever buy, super expensive for a really good one compared to aluminium. Now thermo’s is the interesting conversation. Extreme airflow can Band-Aid/offset bad area’s of the cooling system. If you get the rest of your cooling system right (radiator, thermostat, water pump and clean system) AND aren’t going for 250hp with a complete black cloud coming out the exhaust when you step on it, thermos are supposedly adequate according to a few guys on patrol hub who have actually done it properly. Most of the TD owners you talk who hate thermos will either be dyno-hp-chasers or guys who haven’t set up their system right. If Roam ends up chasing 160-180hp with a 16G or smaller and a medium front mount cooler without bulk soot he’ll do just fine with thermos. If you guys were listening tho he’s doing it because he wants the looks, if he wanted an 18g, 220hp, sooting, high rpm TD I’d 110% agree with yous NO ARGUMENT WHATSOEVER.

Great work mate! Buy yourself a cheap set of terminal release tools and save cutting wires. Rather depin connectors, re-route wiring and then repin the connectors. Works for fuse and relay blocks too. Perhaps consider hiding the electrics under a beauty panel in the engine bay? Under the guard seems like a corrosion nightmare! Happy new year, will be following your project closely!

It’s a good point and I definitely thought about it a bit before I did it, downside to in the cab is electircal fires, upside is you can change them easier if they fail. both would suffer same fate in water but i cant see that being an issue anyway. mounting them where i have them is soooo much easier, 8x 10mm bolts and it’s out, it’s really not to hard to get too, I’d almost argue leaning under the dash would be harder haha 🤘 Both have benifits, I’m just going the simplest way at this point!
@Wickham09
@Wickham09 5 ай бұрын
I think only reason the relays and fuses are under bonnet from factory is for good access + close to battery. Consider relocating from in guard to close to battery wherever the battery goes. That way they are as protected +accessible as your battery. In guard wouldnt be too bad to get at but if battery is in the back then you're looking in multiple different places for any fault. If it's all in the back a good chance to make it all look mint. But you will need to make a custom loom. Love the Shaved Bay GQ though
@RoamLyfe
@RoamLyfe 5 ай бұрын
@@Wickham09 what I’m thinking of doing is just running a large cable to the engine bay and putting a positive stud mount in there, that way there’s basically a battery in the engine bay! It certainly won’t be as clean as a custom loom, but I don’t get many hours a week to film so I think this is the best option!

All I have to say is with those NDC bearings I do not trust them. NDC and TDC are unreliable in my own experience and with other people I've spoken to about them. I had NDC bearings just straight up delaminate themselves at 42,000kms in a fully turbo spec built silvertop only running a 10mm and 11psi of boost. I only caught it because I sent the car to the mechanic to have the sump gasket done, they found the sump was FULL of copper shavings. Rang the engine builder, he went over to the mechanics workshop that the car was at, pulled the bearings and found they were delaminating themselves.

If you're going to all that trouble anyway, when you're done, will you want to see all the holes in the engine bay? I know I wouldn't and it would piss me off that I didn't take the time to do that. Depends on your chill level, and I have none. :)

If the noise goes away with foot on the clutch, then the problem is in the gearbox, because the gearbox stops rotating when you depress the clutch. If the noise begins when you press the clutch, then it is the throw-out bearing that is shot.
