You're an engineer. You know the benefits and the problems with the solutions you have available. It's only natural that you know why the e-brake is stupid. But, it's a *feature*, and the higher ups force you to make dumb choices. Often because of "marketability" (what is that anyway?). I'm an electrical/software engineer, and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone more skeptical about entrusting computers and and systems all the things the general public seems willing to. Sure, some of it may be fine, and some of it may even be for the better. But is it really a good idea to do EVERYTHING online? Do we really want computers to be the sole controller of safety systems? The answer is obviously "no", but yet we get pushed to do so. The consequences are catastrophes down the line. But at that point it can be blamed as an "unforseen happenstance", even though the engineering team kept raising the question.

I"ve been driving fuel tankers for 15 years. Recently a colleague in a new truck with a full load of fuel had a complete electrical failure whilst driving. He rolled to a stop as the gearbox had nuetralised, the gear selector became inoperative and the electronic park brake could not be activated. He eventually managed to pump the brakes to an extent that the air brakes started to come on but it became difficult to pump them after a certain point and the brakes hadn't locked on completely. Fortunately he was only on a slight slope and he was able to get out of the cab and quickly activate the drive away protection bar (these are raised when unloading so the truck cannot be moved whilst fuel is flowing) on the other side of the front trailer which fully activates the trailer brakes. These electronic systems are insane.

My father was a certified (Was what they were called in the 1970s) diesel mechanic. Meaning he took courses to keep up with the latest technology of motors. He always told us when a car manufacturer redesigns a vehicle, never buy the first few years of the change. Wait, see the kinks in it, or see if it's going to be an overall lemon. He said engineers are paid to design. Designing is not always thinking, it's to sell the car, and in their case, get an award. Technology does not always walk hand in hand with common sense....

Adding complexity for the sake of complexity is something car manufacturers seem very fond of. @@chucknorris277 Not engineers for sure. Engineers often get the blame but engineers are trained to go for the simplest and most reliable solution. In big corporations engineers are last in the chain of command and If the intention was to save a few cents then it's the bean counters who gave the instruction. Adding an electric motor, switch, relay, wiring etc in place or a simple cable and lever, I'm not so sure it saves anything at all which is why I say it's the marketing people who wanted it as another fancy trick to sell. There's a reason why almost every cheap budget car has a mechanical lever while the electric system has become the norm in luxury models.

I think the best parking break system was the one with the manual pull lever. You can use it like a manual type of break in case of an emergency. It seems we have no choice with new cars. All the ones I have seen have an electronic controlled break. If no power there is no emergency break. If no power it will not be possible to release it without going under the vehicle with the proper types of tools, and knowing how to manually release it. This is one of the things that annoys me with these new types of cars!

Parking brakes is not designed to stop a moving vehicle. It is intended to prevent a car from rolling away while parked. You can easily drive a car with a parking brake engaged. I have done it a couple of times and realized the mistake only after a couple of miles that the engine is very weak 🙂

Hey Scotty. I had a near death experience with the Subaru parking brake with my 2017 Outback. I won't go into the details, but the brake was inadvertently engaged while on a major throughway while doing 70 mph in the middle lane. The traffic behind us somehow missed us and we survived. I will never forget looking in the mirror seeing an 18 wheeler bearing down on us and swerving at the last second. The main issue is the location of the switch. It is on the center console with easy access from either of the front seats. I subsequently complained to Subaru and the automotive safety authorities here in Canada, but never heard a word.

That's a misconception promulgated mostly in English language. Parking brake is not designed to stop a moving car. They are meant to prevent a parked car from rolling away. In real life, if all your hydraulic brakes fail (which is extremely unlikely since they operate on separate hydraulic circuits) you will be much better off and safer to stop your car using the engine, not the parking brake, if you are driving fast.

When you get just P0420 code, or also with P0171, more often than not, it's fairly safe to say that you may have an intake leak somewhere between the mass airflow sensor and the cylinder head. Or an exhaust leak between the catalytic converter and the cylinder head. And as Scotty said, it's also possible to have a failing O2 sensor or mass airflow sensor. But unless you were also dealing with a bad misfire issue, it's very rare that the catalytic converter is the problem.

I've seen a few videos of people with Teslas or an Electric Hummer where an electrical fault meant the car wouldn't work, and because the hood and trunk are also electrically operated and don't have any mechanical handles you can't even get under the hood to disconnect the 12V battery to reboot the system. I don't mind having an electronic system for convenience but there really does need to be a proper mechanical backup for when things go wrong. There's a reason heavy machinery has an emergency stop button even though they're designed to stop themselves if they detect a problem, you want that failsafe.

This is honestly yet another reason I like Toyota. While they do have the electronic parking brake on some of their high-end Camry's for example, the base (L/LE) models still use a mechanical foot parking brake. I believe many mfrs went to electronic for simplification (since many cars have hillstart assist perhaps) and because people would leave the parking brakes on and in some cases, it was easy to drive with them applied (did that a few times in my truck, and with so much power,I ended up destroying the parking brake system multiple times. Part of that had to do with the sensor that detects if the parking brake was enabled or not, was bad so I would have to look down at the pedal to figure out if it was engaged or not... so for electronic brake systems, this can be done automatically by the car, and in some cases, if you try to drive the car with the brake enabled, it can either prevent the car from moving by locking the transmission up, or by releasing the parking brake automatically if no faults are detected).

I've told my mum this. I'm Aussie, and my mum a few year ago bought a 2013 Holden Captiva (us Aussies have nicknamed it the "Craptiva"), and one day I was driving her to work, when suddenly the battery died on a hill in traffic. When it died, my mum panicked and said "Put the handbrake on, why aren't you putting it on?",I told her I couldn't, and when she asked why, I said "because it's an electronic handbrake. We just lost power, meaning we've lost the handbrake". We were lucky that there was a large and thick enough piece of a side rail left on the road that we were able to use as a tyre wedge to stop it rolling, and were able to safely roll the car back to a side street to wait for the towie. Electronic handbrakes, electronic steering racks, electronic brake "cables", they can all rot in hell, because they are ALL pointless. Mechanical is better and safer.

Thankfully the cars of all of my close relatives (this may surprise some people but i do not own a car, I don’t even have a driving licence) all have a proper mechanical handbrake (and they also have manual gearboxes), my sisters car does not even have a remote, so you have to put the key in the door and turn it to lock or unlock (i think her one is the most basic one you could get of that model, as that car is available with a remote for the doors) The doors on my sisters car automatically lock when the car goes above a certain speed (i think 20mph, but im not 100% sure), however, there is a mechanical release for the lock (in fact its built into the inside handle, pull the handle on the inside, the door will open even if locked, and doing so will unlock the door in the process, the doors do not automatically unlock when the engine is turned off, you have to unlock them manually, although unlocking or opening either of the front doors will unlock the other doors And the doors can be locked manually from the inside by pushing the inside handle

Give me a car with a proper handbrake anytime as I know I can do a hill start and let the handbrake off progressively when I want to. Even the clumsiness of the (mechanical) parking brake pedal and release plunger on my previous Citroen ID19B and XMs is far more welcome than an electronic one which the operator may or may not have full control of under certain circumstances.
