Had a 2007 Mercedes GL450 for a while a couple years back. Had a lot of really huge advantages as well as disadvantages. For one, the interior was awesome, it's hard to believe it came from 2006-2007 to be honest. High quality materials that held up even after I believe what was around 15 years. The engine was great, powerful for its time, sounded good, and only really started to have issues near the end of its lifespan. The vehicle aged really well for a car from the 00's in my opinion, I mean compare its looks to some American brand cars from the same time period. There were also lot of features that were way ahead of its time, such as air suspension, unibody SUV, assisted cruise control, assisted parallel parking, etc. However, its reliability was subpar and when something did break it was very expensive. The air suspension system was clearly in its early stages as the first gen GL450 air ride bags were prone to malfunctioning, leaking, and literally exploding. An air bag in the rear violently exploded after overfilling, and one in the front developed a leak. The engine also eventually started misfiring in one of its cylinders. It managed to last to 180k miles, which I suppose overall is quite good for a Mercedes from the 2000's. It was still a good experience driving it though, and I do quite miss the car though even to this day.

2007 GL450. Now 164k.Everyting works, Loads of room in the 3 rows of seats. Replaced front air shocks, repainted left rear fender (clearcoat was coming off) and the occasional light bulb. Looks great, pleasure to drive. I use liqui-moly in the engine coolant and oil (just me). Highly recommend Michelin tires.

Actually that M273 is a 4.7L. 4,663 cc. The 550 would have gotten the 5.5L version of the engine. As far as I know, this X164 GL is the only US market vehicle to ever get the smaller M273. Everything else was only available as a 550 (I guess I'm referring to the E-class and S-class).

A friend had two of the old model but in the UK they had the 3.0 V6 diesel engines. Certainly the older one, which must be over ten years old by now, had the off-road package. That was a GL of course, not GLS and am pretty sure the newer one was also the last of GL, which would be five years old or more by now, had it too. He changed it last year when the suspension played up by randomly raising to the high level at 70mph and dealer unable to replicate or repair. The earlier one started blowing suspension airbags at about 50,000 miles and after a massive charge for replacement he then bought the parts and fitted airbags himself. He now has a BMW X7

Before you conclude that the X167 has no interesting off road chops, you need to find one with the E-ACTIVE body control suspension. It has individual wheel height control, and can actually adapt to uneven terrain as you drive. Many videos on youtube.

Actually tires are not that big on this example... I think in Europe the standard for this GLS is 315-335 tire on a 22-23 inch wheels. It is needed because it certainly will be doing 120mph on a cruise control all day long on an autobahn. With the car weighing 2,5 tons... it sounds reasonable.

There are a few things I don't like about my GL550 The 21-inch wheels are not necessary. I'd rather have a smaller wheel and a better off-road/all-season tire. Mine has a beige interior. It's not worn, or ripped or anything like that. It's just difficult to maintain and doesn't age as well as black. if my truck had a black interior it would be perfect. The cargo nets behind the front seats are horrible. I understand why MB put them in. They are meant to be utilitarian storage for wet items, a bottle of water etc. The reality is that when you have little kids sitting in a car seat they kick the back of the seat and tear the nets with their shoes by pulling on them. I would love to replace my nets with solid pockets like my S550 has. my 2011 GL has a different center stack. The radio and climate control are different. Mine doesn't have a digital display. I think that setup was optional on mine. Mine does have a rear entertainment system that is different from 2009, and I have heated rear seats. The GLs have two USB ports. One is in the glove compartment, and the other is in the passenger side wheel well against the center stack. The GL550 has 54 more horsepower and more torque than the 450 and believe me you know it's there. It's so powerful off the line that there is torque steer. My wife loves driving it, and drives into Manhattan 3 to 4 days a week. She says it's a solid like a tank. I just wish her and the kids took better care of it. I am embarrassed when I go to the car wash. It's not a bad car, it does what it's supposed to do and can do a lot more if needed. Just knowing I could take it off-roading, or tow 7500 pounds with confidence is an added bonus.

After owning a silver 2011 450 for 8 years, in 2021, wife got involved in an accident with the GL and my 2 year old daughter was also in the car, I decided to replace it with the same thing again, because that car took it like a champ and they both walked out without a scratch. Late model Chevy Impala was like a smashed coke can and GL was still able to drive, of course the insurance totaled it… I searched and shopped for an X166 this time but neither of us liked the way they handled, also I was aware of the engine problems in the year range we were looking at. Decided to stay with X164 and I searched for a black on black low mileage 550 for 4 months and finally located a 2012 550 in Portland. Flew there after the vehicle passed the pre purchase inspection and drove it back to Colorado I agree with everything you said about the 550, kids love the rear entertainment system but constantly kicking the front seats and ruining the storage nets. Black interior is nice but hard to keep it clean with kids. I have a dislike for ACs running too long, gives me headache, only turn it on when it’s 90 or 95 out there. Especially these days temperature around 75-85, I tilt the sunroof, open the rear wings and push on the cooled seats and OMG, I’m in heaven. Love those cooled seats, my W212 doesn’t have them unfortunately. Despite the common belief, X164 is actually a really solid car and affordable to own, especially if you turn your own wrench. After 3 years of ownership on this 550, I spent only $1200 for an unpredicted repair. It was the AC compressor 2 days before we go to a 800 mile trip in July, I did not have the time to order and wait for the parts and work on it, took it to my indie and they got it the next day. I changed all the fluids, including transmission fluid, all filters, spark plugs, belts and a couple light bulbs, that’s it.

@@commodoreras I too own a 2012 black on tan Gl550 and it has been very reliable, just typical maintenance and of course the suspension air bags, which have all been replaced. I have about 165k and have owned it since 2017. The engine has been solid and the ride is buttery smooth! I think I may have spent about 7k in total for maintenance in my 7years of ownership. Suspension, sensors, sensors, sensors, engine lights like a Christmas tree and on and on. Final straw was the rear tailgate wiper motor and new injectors required at the same time. The mechanic must have loved the thought of my car coming in. And it wasn't even high mileage! I drove as fast as I could to a new car dealer and traded it in. Even though they offered me peanuts for the car I let it go and have not regretted it one day. In fact, I made the decision not to buy another s&*t box Mercedes again!
